This is one of my absolute favourite scenes. The story is lifted fully from the plot and placed in a zone where only the emotions and reactions of the characters matter. This seems to accomplish everything that the UFO scene in season 2 wanted to do but didn't quite achieve. Very Lynchian IMO!

About the UFOs, I can explain them. Now, we learned that season 2 was based on survivor accounts from the Sioux Falls Massacre, right? What do you suppose Peggy Blumquist's account of events was like? I can certainly imagine it taking all sorts of imaginative turns, such as she hit Rhys because she was distracted by a UFO and there was a UFO at the motel and so on. Narrators don't get much more unreliable than that, but nevertheless, the version of the Sioux Falls Massacre we saw was faithful to such accounts as were available.

I figure the bowling alley was just her mortal mind trying to interpret a glimpse of the infinite in terms it could actually process. I figure the same holds with Ray: she was seeing his soul ready to be born into a new form, and the closest thing she could interpret it as was a kitten.
The sad part is that she actually failed in her task. She was supposed to give the message to Vargas and kill him, but she let her thirst for revenge blind her so she went after Emmitt instead. God punished her by having the Highway shoot her.

4:47 And this pretty much confirms what this bowling alley ACTUALLY is - it's a kind of 'purgatory' that appears when one is near death where a person is judged by the angels or God or whoever for their sins before deciding whether they should be given a second chance at life, admitted to Paradise or sent to Hell. Nikki passes Paul's judgement easily: she's not a bad person, just rough around the edges. Paul states that 'the others' thought Wrench should 'stay behind' but they've given him a pass because he's 'on a better path' - this is their (the angels, God, whoever) way of saying that Wrench has done some seriously questionable things but they believe he has the potential to do good, so they let him leave with Nikki. Yuri, of course, has no such luck, not only because he has killed Helga his former girlfriend, but also presumably because he is carrying some of the 'old souls' of the Cossacks, according to the philosophy of Gilgul (this would also explain why Yuri seems to have a bit of an obsession with the Cossacks throughout Season 3 - that obsession is a manifestation of Yuri carrying those 'old souls').

+Livingston Hampton I agree that nikki definitely was a pretty bad person, but i think you're pretty off base when it comes to her motivations lmao 1. she ESCAPED from prison, so there's no such thing as getting away from the criminal lifestyle when by virtue of being a fugitive, you are always living as a criminal, and won't be able to turn your life around so easily. 2. everything she does after escaping prison is to avenge ray's death (which obviously means she did love him). she gives all the money to wrench because her only goal was to kill varga and his men, as well as emmit later in the final episode.

I was so happy that Her and Wrench teamed up. Not only that they really had each other’s back. When she was killed by the trooper bc of Emmitt he waited a few years and came back to drop him. He didn’t forget. I’m sure it was the only person besides Numbers who looked out for him like that. First season of Fargo was a masterpiece. Lot of people like the second season which I do but I thought the third season was just as good. David Thewlis was phenomenal as Varga. Him and malvo are my favorite characters. Then Mike Milligan is the next. Didn’t care much for the fourth season though. Nothing against Chris Rock I like him but he can’t do dramatic acting. He’s a comedian. I wonder if the Beetle could be a reference to Blood Simple, the Coens' first movie. At first I thought it could have been Da Fino's Beetle from The Big Lebowski, but the part about the car being "swept clean" of its sins sounded off - Da Fino didn't strike me as a potentially sinful character. But then I remembered about the more sinister Lorren Visser from Blood Simple. His Beetle was old and rusty, whereas the one in which Nikki and Wrench drive away is in pristine condition with otherworldly shiny metallic paint, without a spot of rust or dirt - especially impressive given its age and the winter conditions. It's as if the car indeed had its sins swept clean after being taken from Visser; Visser who suffers a fate similar to Yuri's - left for dead after being severely injured, possibly bleeding out, and even referencing the possibility of meeting other people in the afterlife.

I love that within the logistics of "a true story", just about everything up to a certain point beghins to blur the line between a real story and more of a memory until this episode and afterwards we're left wondering what it all means. If you go back and watch, there' an interesting amount of detail to support a perfectly realistic narrative that is eventually taken over by the literary influences, connections, and everything else not literally in the text. From a "true" story" point of view- Ray Wise is a criminal entity of Jewish decent, putting him in direct opposition witht the notably anti-semitic Vargas. He went as far as following Gloria. His character is the best and deepest example of a device that's disconnected from the "reality" of the story, yet he still influences things greatly in the way of guiging a few characters and providing an abstract ending to the mysterious, haunting narrative from the start of the show.

It's a shame the CW superhero shows are no more, because I would have liked Ray Wise to play the Phantom Stranger just like this. Just some guy who finds himself chatting with the heroes every now and again, and they think he's just some guy, even as he effortlessly helps them navigate moral quagmires. Like, you know how there was that whole thing where Kara Danvers and Lena Luthor were on bad terms for a while? I would have been happy if Ray / Phantom Stranger happened to be standing next to Kara while she was waiting in line to buy donuts, and they started talking about expectations on friends and you sometimes have to meet them much more than halfway. And then later Lena would be on a plane next to Ray / Phantom Stranger, and they would have talked about the many reasons people keep secrets and they're very often not malicious even if they feel like a betrayal.
And this was the reason why the blue channel was removed from all other scenes.
