I thought this was one of the most brilliant dark comedic moments of the entire season. They build up the Undertaker's reputation pretty much the entire episode and he ends up with one minute of screen time.

it's the whole show that is made that way not only this scene - it's always psychological, something else ends up happening, opposite of what you expected. It was not until the end of the season that i figured how much Mike actually sucked at doing his job lol and it was a perfect ending for him.

@@glutamin111 How did he suck at his job? i thought his ending was to show that even though he finished the job the Kansas mob still considered him nothing more than an uppity "egg plant" (as they call him many times) and wouldn't give him his due.

@@Lemuriam mate, Fargo is all about storytelling. They have a well paced narrative spanning 10 episodes per season. Bloated shows like Walking Dead are the ones without story. They exist only because of viewers and AMC is milking every last drop out of it. Fargo is one of the only shows that actually has a planned vision that is evenly spread over a season. You may not like it, but saying it has no story is just stupid.

In many ways, the Undertaker is what Mike aspires to be. A comic book villain with a code name, a themed costume and gimmicky henchmen. But already we can see the crack in his dream : the henchmen are badly trained for their job and the Undertaker's only line reveal a complete lack of class, opposite to his demeanor.

Just the way he carries himself is completely different. In the elevator he comes across as a proper James Bond villain but when he enters the apartment, he walks and talks like a typical mob goon.

I love the little cues that certain scenes have that lead into others. In this one after Gale leads the three in, when he turns to the camera you can see the knife in his hand for a split second. He's not the focus of the shot so you can miss it. It's like when Hanzee orders the drink, if you look to the side, you can see the bartender duck beneath the viewer's view, as that's when he spits in the drink. They even do it with sound, like when Betsy picks up the picture and then it cuts to Molly and you hear a smashing noise to indicate she's dropped the glass picture. But that sound is made so it's barely noticeable. Goddamn this shoe is great!

Great visual storytelling in the lift without a word of dialog. In around twenty seconds we can interpret: 1. The undertaker is a bit of a dick, if not a racist one, having his Asian orderlies doing such menial tasks for him as pushing the elevator buttons. His superiority over them is more physically present in his height too. 2. He's armed and his murderous intentions for Mike are clear by his checking of it's ease of draw from his coat pocket. 3. From the expression of the most camera-featured 'servant' (the one on the undertakers right, who pushes the button) neither of them want to be there and have a disrespect for their 'master'. The little looks he shoots him behind his back and to his partner make it clear he at least has a distain either for how he's treated or what he's doing. Also the fact that he failed to push the button without prompt might tell us he's new, as does the way he checks his uniform in the mirror. Adds a bit more impact to his collateral murder.

I loved that. They set it up like it was gonna be this important and exciting character who would be in conflict with Mike for at least a few episodes onwards, and who knows what would happen: he kills Mike, Mike kills him, they actually end up liking eachother... and then, as we are contemplating this, boom, killed in two seconds, subverting the shit out of the whole intense setup/introduction to the character, and catching everyone by surprise. Brilliant.

Same. He thought he was going to be a king. If you recall, in one of the earlier episodes he comments on how he used to eat dinner with his mother in the pitch-black darkness. From that to being a king...that's a long, long way, and that was a lot of hope and drive. Now, he's a king with a desk job and a 401k, pushing papers and being told to lose "this whole Western thing" he's got going on with his threads. He was one absurd, badass, extremely well-read mofo full of references to everything and...he's so totally stuck in a soulless hell at the end. :(
