You are in the panhandle of Florida and Panama City Beach. The pine trees are planted and harvested for wood and the pine needles are harvested for landscaping. Boiled peanuts are good and salty. If you eat too many, your lips will swell. You put it in your mouth to open it and then the salty brine goes down with the peanut but spit the shell out. Lots of pickled items in the south. Pickled eggs are a big thing too. More to the east of Panama City is the area that was hit by a hurricane last year so they are still recovering. The lobbed off trees you see are crape myrtles and they are trimmed back every year to keep from growing too tall. They flower most of the summer and are beautiful.

The rolled up pine needles are used for mulching. Most wood chips will attract termites and are not used in the south. Florida pan handle has had a lot of forest fires but also grows trees for lumber. Looks like a lumber grove. The trees lopped off are Crepe Myrtle and are cut back to keep their natural form and produce strong branches. They will have beautiful upright blooms in late May or early June. Most people down south love boiled peanuts but not me.

Actually, the crepe myrtles should absolutely positively NOT be topped off. To keep their natural shape you prune them differently. They are prettier when done properly

We've lived in Florida for 50+ years. This year we've had a rainy winter which we are thankful for - replenishes the water table, lessens the chance of a bad fire season and keeps my water bill lower. Lots of those pine trees were planted in burned areas or areas where a hurricane wiped out existing trees. They serve multiple construction purposes. Removing the needles on the ground lessens the chance of fire and insects and is sold as mulch. The lopped off trees are crepe myrtle - I call it crepe myrtle murder. They can get big but there are varieties for smaller yards. I hate seeing them all chopped off! Boiled peanuts aren't my favorite but sooo much better from a place where they sell them fresh (not canned).

💐‼️The lopped off trees are CREPE MYRTLE TREES. We call it crepe myrtle massacre. The trees get pruned ever so often, but some tend to cut them back too far. Trimming them makes more branches and blooms. The massacre only makes them take longer to grow new branches and longer to bloom again

I was born in Central Florida and grew up down there in Lakeland. I'm sure the trees are trimmed way back due to hurricane damage. I personally like the boiled peanuts but not everyone does. They do get a lot of sunshine but also quite a bit of rain and storms. You will see people in jackets when it's under 80°. Most of the year is so hot and humid that locals get very thin blood. I hope everything is improving in regard to the emergency. Miss your live steams. Trusting the Lord for traveling mercies and His ever present help in the days of trouble.

In the south, they use pine needles as mulch. I've been told less chance of fire starting 🤷‍♀️ Them trees look like crape myrtle's to me. I know it's controversial, some people do what's called a Topping where they take the top branches off to keep it short. I just moved to the south 6 months ago and I'm still learning a lot myself. Boild peanuts are a no thank you for my family! 😂 we like them crunchy and roasted. It's just a how you been raised kind of thing. Tallahassee resident here. Native floridian too. Pine needs are sold by bales as mulch as they do not rot easily. Pine tree farms are a huge thing, and they log in the national forest too. They mill for lumber and wood pulp. Hurricane Idalia wiped a lot out near Perry and they lost a lumber business right after that too. The trees that were "topped" off are crepe myrtle. They do that on the fall so the new growth comes and forms a canopy and the new growth blooms, nsny different colors depending on the variety. We have had a lot of rain but will not get more until Saturday. Boiled peanuts are a southern thing. Along with pickled sausage, and no I don't eat that. So are pickled okra, pickled eggs, and pickled pig feet, I don't eat any of that either. Sorry you missed the sunshine, but grateful you are safe and got to see the beach. Prayers fir your family and for a safe return. Finally native floridians do get cold very easily, probably felt like late spring to you all.

Rolled up pine straw will be sold as mulch for flower beds - helps to hold moisture around plants in our long hot dry but humid summers - that's my 2 cents - I live in Mississippi & that's what we do up here in North Central MS. Enjoy the delish seafood & fish & oranges & veggies in Florida - yep the sun does shine there but they're also surrounded by big bodies of water. Definitely a tree farm. Some for lumber, some for the paper companies to make paper and toilet tissue. They take the pine needles to use as landscaping materials as you would use mulch, and the cut off trees are crepe myrtles. They cut them to keep them short. If left alone they will get 30 feet tall. Either way they are beautiful in bloom. Lots of pickled food. If you can pickle it, the South will do so. Where you are is still mainly original Floridians.

When you see a lot of little trees growing close together it is an attempt at reforestation; after a fire, hurricane or logging an employee of one entity or another tosses out a bunch of seed. When you see little trees growing in an offset grid it’s usually a tree farm, but could also be an attempt at reforestation on private property. The pine straw is raked up and sold at garden centers across the south east; a lot of suburban yards have “pine islands,” named for the pine straw mulch rather than what grown in them. I don’t know whether to pity you for never having had a boiled peanut, or envy you for getting to try them for the first time. I haven’t seen pickled sausages in years, but I lived them as a child. We pickle, fry and/ or wrap bacon around everything down here.

We call it Crepe Murder when people lop off the tops of Crepe Myrtle trees. There really isn't a need to do that except to keep them short, and many people erroneously think they are supposed to cut them back. Crepe Myrtles aren't supposed to look like stubs. We have 4 crepe myrtles in our yard, and they are big beautiful trees that we never cut. One is probably 40 years old and it is huge and tall over the whole yard and house. It is gorgeous in the summer in full bloom.

Rainy season, also unless you are going to Miami or further south then the panhandle mid state or more you are going to have winter weather. I live in GA and usually don't think about going to FL until April and stop going Oct or Nov. It is a 7 hour drive from the top to the tip (key even further) so, yes the weather is going to be different depending on where you go. They sell the pine needles as pine straw (get it together, it is PINE STRAW). Trees are loped off because the power company came through and cut them to make sure they don't grow to the point of hitting the power lines. Also they are crape myrtle and get pruned back in the winter.

When you are by the beach, the weather is often overcast. It's the same in California where I live. I lived in Santa Cruz, California for 10 years and it was often overcast until 2pm in the afternoon especially in Spring and Summer. The best time of the year was fall in Santa Cruz..

The woods have been logged out. The pine needles are probably for mulch. Those trees are crepe myrtle trees. And they are cut back every year as a way to prune them for new growth. The pickled sausage is just another thing to pickle like eggs, green beans, or beets. It's just a matter of what you like to eat that can be pickled.

Hi Tara......first let me say that I'm sorry for your family emergency and we're lifting y'all up in prayer. Secondly, we're from FL so here are the answers to your questions: 1.) Even though we're the sunshine state, we have our fair share of rain! 2.) In northern FL, we have a large forestry industry with products ranging from lumber to paper (Rayonier and GP are big companies). 3.) Those lopted off trees are crepe myrtles and they are pruned in the spring to produce beautiful trees with flowers which can be white, pink, purple, salmon colors and such. 4.) The rolled up pine straw is another big industry as people use it for mulching around trees and flower beds. Hope you enjoyed your visit and maybe the next time we'll have some sunshine for y'all!! Blessings ❤
