I completely disagree. Air transport progress has been stagnant and largely nonexistent (except in information technology). We fly at the same speed we did in the late 1950's. We all expected supersonic to become the standard, with speeds in the 2M-3M range. Alas, that did not happen.

J p LMAO its up to the pilot flying how much flying he does e.g. watch FLy JVs latest video, A320, goes no autopilot or auto throttle for the last 8000 feet , and dont forget all the training and experiance it takes to get to a big Jet like the a380. They are not like bus drivers, they go through rigorous training and retraining to be able to qualify to fly the big passenger jet. Yes the planes can fly themselves, but they have to calculate fuel , enter routes, monitor ATC, plan for weather deal with delays etc etc. SO dont go around calling people uneducated, have respect for every profession, treat cleaners like CEOs and have a nice day

Every time we fly, we put our lives at the hands of these two gentlemens at the cockpit of the aeroplanes. More often than not, we take things for granted on the responsibilities these pilots have to shoulder each and every time they fly passengers, especially during takeoffs and landings. So let me say it, to all the pilots flying people around the world, a big thank you to you all for being professional and making sure we reach our destinations safely.

@@justplanes Yes, Air Luxor had lot's of daily flights to Madeira many years ago, was the best airliner flying to Madeira from the mainland by far, nice airplanes, lovely crew, super service, but unfortunately the government-owned TAP made everything for Air Luxor to shut the door and leave Madeira! I will be always pleased with the Mirpuri family for what they tried to do in Madeira!
"Spooling" is often used in a very general way - as simply allowing an engine to ramp up to speed. But it's actually the pre-take off thrust - to ensure engines on each side of the aircraft are operating in unison. If they did not, the plane would pull to one side. When checked, full take off thrust is applied.

the coolest part about flying is when they put the plane on "parking brake" before the line of the runway and throttle up the engines to "max" power and release the brakes. the plane shakes and the acceleration is awesome, but it's also cool when the pilot already throttles up the engines halfway through the corner heading for the runway and takes off.
The all around professionalism is astounding. Thank god for them, in the air and on the ground.

@Robert Day - I'm not talking about what people want, nor about those who fly them. I'm talking about what it takes to make them keep flying. It's not a plane that just lands anywhere. Huge changes have to be made to airports to accommodate the beast. That means huge amounts of money for airlines and airports. It doesn't take long when researching the platform to see how much a nightmare that really is. I flew on one to Thailand. Loved it. But what me or anyone else thinks or feels about it is immaterial when airports and airlines start crunching numbers for maintenance, upkeep, cost effectiveness, and many other parameters.
