Fan Request: The Only Student In Her High School Class | Letterman
Ойын-сауық
Fan Friday Request:
"Hello my name is Stephanie, I am an alumni at Hoven, South Dakota and I have a request for a clip that I cannot find anywhere.
In Season 9 Episode 157, Mr. Lettermen had interviewed a young lady by the name of April Kleinschmidt. She was the only high schooler in her class who graduated in 2002 at Harold, South Dakota.
Later on in her life she married a man named Micheal H. and started to work alongside him in the Hoven High School District, and is now the superintendent there. I would like to show them my appreciation by finding this clip and showing it to them.
I would greatly appreciate this and I wish you the best!
Sincerely,
Stephanie"

The confidence and strength she speaks with to David Letterman of all people, in front of a large audience and on tv! Wow! Really impressive girl!

Thanks for this, Alan. What a lovely young lady and my wish would be that she could inspire many more people in her life This video has already been seen 108K times and let's hope it goes over 1M. She's probably about 40 years old now and living a life she chose to live and she should understand there are many, many people in our Country who admire her and wish her well in every aspect of her life.

Yeah, great that she has a job that always puts money ahead of education. Real winner.
Dave always treated genuine people with a lot of respect.
The girl was great, but Letterman was masterful. He was funny without being mean, and asked good questions, while keeping eye contact and showing he was interested.

I fully agree. His timing was masterful as well. Notice at the 2:43 point where he pauses his interview to allow the audience to finish clapping.
Well that just brightened my whole morning. Interesting her describing an early form of a Zoom call!

She learned to socialize with adults instead of dumb peer pressure.
I live in Iroquois, South Dakota, about 80 miles east of Harold, SD. and on the same highway. Our small towns are just loaded with wonderful people. She had so much charisma, while being on a nationally televised show.
Did you notice how many were there to witness her graduation? We only see half the audience briefly, at a quick count 80-100 folks. Assuming the other side of the hall was similarly populated that would mean about 80% of the town turned out for one graduate - now that is community support!
She had her 20 year class reunion 2 years ago. I wonder if she was surprised at how much she did or didn't change?

She did a wonderful job 20+ years ago. Charming young lady.
So many takeaways. Going from a small town to NYC. Speaking directly and no nonsense. Nervous but willing to give her side. Large audience jitters not too obvious. Strong answers including “stand for something” comment. Good eye contact. Planned out future. Figured out how to establish circle with limited number of kids. I could not stop watching.
She couldn’t be lovelier!
She and Letterman were a great team! They were a hoot!
This was a really sweet, down to earth interview. We need more interviews like this these days.

What a lovely young woman.
This is a great service; so many pieces of television history fall through the cracks!
The greatest thing about this video is that even though David Letterman was born in Indianapolis Indiana, he can relate to the small-town life because of where he is from and the type of life that the girl stated that she lives. Totally Midwest style
That was terrific. Me and my siblings graduated from HS in a school in South Dakota back in the mid-to-late 70s. It was great. My wife and I are now planning our return since retirement is upon us. The people are the best.
What a fun, uplifting interview!
For once, the audience at her graduation politely held their applause until all graduates received their diplomas.
a zoom meeting sounded like 'whoa' back then lol
This is what the best of America represents for me, your Canadian neighbour. Wonderful.
WoW! this was 22 years ago (2002)! hope she's having a great Life !!! 🙌🎉 someone should have a 'where are they now' segment !
I'm very impressed with how this young lady presented herself. And she looks like The South Dakota version of Michelle Dockery.
A really smart, sweet kid who's so self-aware and confident. I wish I had half her confidence back in high school.
I miss seeing Dave doing this show. :( He seems to be happy though doing other things. Thank you David. You're not an a-hole.
This girl is 40 now. Welcome to the future everybody!
That "VTEL" system with two TVs feels so archaic today. 😂
I wish I had classmates like her back in school. She's so bright and adorable !
I always like when Dave had a regular person on, he just wanted to hear about their life and treated them with humor and respect. With certain celebrities, gloves were off, because why not.
She was voted ‘Most likely to succeed’, ‘Prettiest Girl’, ‘Best Athlete’, Best Personality’.🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I don’t know the booking process for the show but she was a refreshing guest.
I lived about 30 minutes from Harrold! I had some buddies from the Harrold-Highmore area. All the people there are great! There must be something in their water because everyone is so well-spoken and wonderful!
Wow zoom classroom a full two decades before zoom classrooms were a thing (thanks to covid). I can sympathise a little, because in my college I had three lectures (classes) per day where it was just me and the lecturers for the 40 minute classes.
WISH YOU THE BEST YOUNG LADY. GO GET'EM!!!

Parents must be proud of her. She did great.
"You ever just sneak into North Dakota?" ......So stupid it's hilarious .

Man, my graduating class was 366 and upon going to college, I found out that that was really small, but, geez, this is next level. I love how she said it was great because if she didn't get something they couldn't tell her that most everybody did, so let's move on. Good point!

This is what I miss most about Dave and Johnny. Their interviews with regular people that had something unique about them, not trying to promote anything...just good TV. If you've never seen Johnny Carson interview a woman that collected potato chips, you're in for a treat.

Great story. Thanks Dave!
I've watched Dave since I was her age 80's, this was one of the best! Hope this find young lady at the time is doing very well, I wouldn't doubt she is Dave's joke, football team, etc? 😂
Thank you for finding this clip, April and her family really appreciate it!
My daughter graduated from her North Dakota high school with a class of six....really makes the graduating ceremony run quickly. Well she has already had her 10 and 20 year reunions. Wonder if a small school like that has combined reunions?
She was great!
SALT OF THE EARTH-BRAVO APRIL! And truly enjoyed watching Dave genuinely get to know her and share her accomplishments with us.
Of course Dave liked her, she laughed at all his jokes. :)
Bet you she was ranked first in her class!
Masterful. Dave at his phenomenal best. Girl is beautiful.
Sure, turned out to be a special young lady!

Wow. She was using an early version of Zoom before it was even a thing.
Valedictorian, Salutatorian, President of the senior class, Yearbook lead, etc. Bet she got a bunch of points on her college entrance interviews.
if this young woman doesn't restore your faith in tomorrow, nothing will !! congratulations, a little late but . i see a bright future for her.
She’d be 39/40ish now; would love for a follow up interview….

I love her Hawaii story! 😂❤
I think she's awesome. She handles herself well.
This is marvelous!
It is rare when there is no salutatorian, but it is unique when the valedictorian graduates last in her class. (First, last, top third, middle third, bottom third...)
She graduated at the top and bottom of her class! Awesome! Who else can say that!?
What a poised, confident young lady. I'm sure she's done well.
