One of my favorites is Jeff Beck's version of "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat". It was written in the late 50's, by Charles Mingus in honor of the great jazz saxophonist, Lester Young. Jeff's version was recorded in the seventies and is really special. Check it out.

Just found this video a week after we lost Jeff Beck. First heard him with the Yardbirds on a transistor radio (google it youngsters) and even on a horrible 2" speaker his guitar was "different." Followed through the JB Group with a young unknown Rod Steward on vocals, the fusion years, the jazz years, saw him with SRV opening, and we were working on a new video of our top 5 guitar players from 2022 and Jeff was among them. Video should post soon but Jeff Beck created more sounds from a guitar than anybody who ever picked one up. Absolutely incredible player and he will be missed but what a legacy he left behind. Innovative, inspirational, one of a kind.

I have come to think that Jeff secretly hated his guitars. He smashed the ones that couldn’t give him what he wanted, no, demanded from them. Then he settled on Strats, but always asked for more, squeezing and torturing them to make them do his bidding. He was still asking for more until the very end. That is unique. Most guitarists retire or “settle down” at one point or another. He never did.

As a musician of 40+ years myself I have heard and seen almost every guitarist you could imagine from Django Reinhardt Al Di Meola Chet Atkins Les Paul to the Future Jimi Hendrix Joe Satriani Steve vai Yngwie Malmsteen Richie Blackmore etc etc. But the one guitarist who nobody can copy who in my opinion made the guitar an extension of his own voice, not to mention is the only guitarist to copy the human voice and many other instruments just with his hands, I've never seen a guitarist that has so much control over their instrument and make it do whatever they want it to do as Jeff Beck and as he's gotten older he's only gotten better he is the most amazing guitarist and musician I have ever heard. Everybody has their favorites and that's the beautiful thing about guitarist everybody brings something different to the table but God gave Jeff Beck something extra that nobody else has and nobody can copy.

100% agree with what you said. Nobody sounds like Jeff or plays in a way that makes me as a guitar player feel so inferior. Most other players do things I can't do at this moment but I usually feel that if I could (with a ton of practice) play those things maybe crudely but not bad. Jeff does things I don't even begin to understand but they are beautiful and brilliant. .

@@rickpearce9239 Rick I totally agree with you I have tried to replicate Over the Rainbow and Nessun Dorma that Jeff does it took me months to even get close to even think of getting in his ballpark of playing those songs what I love about it is I'm learning so much by attempting his songs he raises the bar every album it's so frustrating to try and keep up with him. 😂 at 62 years of age now one of the biggest things I've learned about music is play for the song don't play for yourself. The most important thing I've also learned is there are so many different players out there and everybody brings something different to the table which is the beautiful thing about it. I take influences to try and build my wisdom at playing instead of trying to copy everyone else. I can't think of anyone better to learn from than Jeff Beck. Don't get me wrong there are so many other guitars in the world that I absolutely love. But to me Jeff is like that rare gemstone that not every body can find.

I can't "name drop" but the person I'm going to reference was 100% believable...... I was a RN in Jacksonville Florida. You have to know the influence that has come from my "town" as southern rock. One night my patient tells me that he was the lead guitarist in a band. A band good enough to have toured and have recorded music that was stolen by industry promoters, a common practice in the early to mid 70's. I am, up until that point, a "there's Jimmy Page and then there's everyone else" guy. So this guy is talking about music. My screening process was "who's the best" and any answer other than Jimmy Page is WRONG. Because I'm not a musician. I'm a FAN. Most fans don't know shit from Shineola, myself included. So this guy doesn't even hesitate..... "Jeff Beck. He was the guy that all were try to catch up with.... Clapton, Page, Townsend..... All of them were in his review mirror." Of course..... In my pathetic musician mine, I immediately discounted this PROFESSIONAL as a hack and went about my busy night as a nurse. But I never forgot what that guy said. 10 years latter I saw "Jeff at Ronnie Scott's" on TV. It was like getting hit in the face with a wet newspaper. Eventually, I saw Jeff live in St. Augustine Fl. Probably a 4,000 amphitheater and it was criminally 1/2 EMPTY. I still like Page the best but I no longer think he's in sole possession of the title. They are like two different sized glasses of water that are both full..... You can not add more water to either glass. Thanks for your insight. Hope you liked my story.

@@francus7227 well thank you yes I love your story that is incredible as a matter of fact when I first saw the movie Song Remains the Same I melted in my seat saying Jimmy Page is a God on guitar he actually is responsible for me learning so much Jimmy Page is not just a great guitarist but a great songwriter a great producer arranger he has it all. He is also in my top 10 favorites of all time I guess that's the best way to describe it we all have our favorites in my opinion there is no best because everybody offers something different. There will always be competition amongst musicians and that's a good thing as long as it stays friendly.I was in a band and we had another guitarist equally as good as I was and him and I would always challenge each other which made us better players. I should also tell you just recently I purchased a DVD of Song Remains the Same and have watched it two nights in a row. And let me tell you there are no bands like that anymore those guys are amazing and yes I still say Jimmy Page is a God on the guitar 😀 thank you for your story and God bless.

He uses his arm and the guitar neck mirrored to make a 5 point star and then he uses the red strobe light to make horns and turn into a DEVIL..... great stuff that is easily missed at full speed in a theater. @@andiman45 It may not make one "great", but it's sure as hell a sign of some seriously individual style. It's very, very difficult to come up with an original style and sound on pretty much every instrument. That's why the greats all have their very distinct style. You know immediately when you hear Carlos Santana, or B.B. King, or Stevie Ray Vaughan. As for Gen Z, they're having trouble figuring out that they if they don't work, they don't have money to live. I'm confident Jeff Beck will be long remembered by the music fans and historians who matter.

The one time I saw him perform the show was being recorded and a couple of times Jeff would have a look of disgust on his face if he didn't, in his mind, "nail it" the way he wanted to, not that we mere mortals would even notice. Perfection was his goal and he almost always achieved it.

@@Audfile Beck has dazzling technique, but he never uses flash guitar wizardry to impress. Instead, each note he plays is impactful, and his playing is about feeling and expression, about playing the right notes in the right way at the right moment with the right sound. This approach and technique have come from years of practice and development over time, proving the adage, "less is more." The spirit, feel, improvisation, and creativity of his playing, as well as his ability to go beyond what is considered possible on the guitar, have had the greatest influence on other players, and why he is often referred to as "the guitarist's guitarist." That takes years of practice and development to get to the point where he can now play with more refinement, beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion. Although there are parallels between how athletes and musicians practice, comparing a Guitarist/musician to an athlete/Boxer is ridiculous. I understand the connection: Both musicians and athletes spend years honing their physical and mental skills required for their respective careers. Although they share many superficial characteristics with athletes, they do not fit into that category. They consider themselves to be artists. All of their training, practice, and rehearsals are to prepare them to walk out on stage and create "art." Not to walk into a ring and take a slew of head and body shots like a boxer. Additionally, it's no secret that boxers don't improve over time; instead, they get punch-drunk ;)

A major hero. I just revisited “Blow By Blow” after years of not listening to it. It truly is a landmark work. For a guy who can do what he does, though, he sure looks ticked off much of the time.

I had that same problem. The woman who I eventually married told me that she was a little afraid of me because of my serious onstage facial expressions. In reality, I was trying to figure out where the heck I was in the song! Jeff seemed to look less angry as he got older.

I listen to his contemporaries and it's like taking a class in "Greatest Hits 101". Never afraid to evolve and rest on past laurels and accomplishments that's one of the things that separates him from the fray. Also, unlike some of his contemporaries, he took care of himself and continues to sound fresh at nearly 80 years of age.......

What a brilliant video - really good compilation. Looking forward to watching part 2. There must be more tributes to Jeff Beck. I remember reading Steve Vai saying some very emotional words about Jeff and his playing. Roger Waters too. Also Carlos Santana and Eric Johnson must be on record saying some stuff. I was surprised to hear Zakk Wylde, John Frusciante and Kirk Hamett. I didn't know that they were actually fans. Jeff Beck will always be the greatest in my opinion.

I'm from Detroit (blow the reveille)! *Jeff Beck is one my all-time fav's!* And, there's the 1st _'conundrum'_ about him. I can never really decide where to place him with the 'Clapton/Hendrix/Page/Van Halen set. It changes from one moment to the next. I think many of his die-hard fans have that same struggle. As a _'playa'_ myself; He IS one if my main influences. I've always felt that many guitarists from the Motorcity ('60s/'70s) tried channeling him. Guys like Glen Buxton, Ted Nugent, James Williamson, (Brutha) Wayne Kramer, Dick Wagner, Steve Hunter, et al. (& Deetroit drummers all tried to be Keith Moon) LoL~° There's SO MANY different 'groups' of Jeff Beck Fans. *-* ones who like the _'Fusion'_ stuff. *-* ones who like the 'latter-day' _'instrumental'_ Jeff Beck. (which kinda puts him in there with those 'modern-day shredders') *-* die-hards who think he created _'Led Zep'_ before there was a Led Zep. (w/Rod Stewart & Ron Wood) I have always liked Beck, Bogart, & Appice more than most fans. I don't think they ever reached their full potential. But, my HANDS-DOWN, FAVORITE is: *The Jeff Beck Group 'Mach-II'!* (the 'Max Middleton' group) ESPECIALLY the *'Rough And Ready'* album! They say he could be the most brilliant player one night. Then, be totally off the next. If you are familiar with his style; You can see how that would happen. *Pulling things OUT of a guitar is his Legacy!* We would ALL be different players if not for him. Peace. Stay Healthy! - Dave B.

Jeff Beck, the guitar players guitar player. No, not player, God. Not even Clapton could match what he did, as Clapton himself freely admitted. The guy was a force like no other in his chosen profession. He never peaked. He just kept ascending. Like a Mozart, we won't be seeing his like again. Though with the advantage of all our musical and video tech we can see him again, and again, and again. Just like with a Mozart, but unlike with such greatness we get to witness the man, himself, play. So, in that sense he's gained a measure of immortality. That said, and it's a measure of how centered a person he was, I suspect he'd just as well have his head stuck under the hood of a car than have to deal with that sort of adoration and acclaim. Which made him even more heroic in that which he did. He was a person with the great luck to have been born in a time that allowed him to maximally follow his muse. And he did so while keeping it accessible and available to young musicians who would come along to follow his path. RIP Jeff Beck, you done good with the time and talents you were blessed with. You've ascended to beyond our field of vision, so it's now on to the next thing, eh? Good luck!

I never thought of Jeff`s playing as angry but I could see how someone might say that. He can be aggressive sounding when he`s stabbing out the main riff or something. Also he can play the most delicate sounding thing you ever heard. He can do it all almost.

I think he was angry in during the '68 -69 period. Plus he had yet to switch to the strat and develop his whammy bar chops to their fullest. I think some of his stuff is incredible delicate and beautiful, sometimes sad but not angry. He can still be very powerful, but I don't think he "plays angry" at all anymore.

  • @MrCherryJuice

Jeff was very frustrated then and even cited himself as being of a 'nervous' disposition. Angry? I would think so. But it seemed to be career frustrations and a desire to express himself, which as we see to this day with his aversion to speaking onstage still seems to be an issue. I chatted with him a couple times and he was very awkward. I understand that with friends he is a real hoot. Possibly this inability to be expressive with others is why he channels so much through his playing. Eric Clapton, who was the star of the mid-60s era admits that though people often want him to play as he did in the Yardbirds, Mayall, and Cream, he can't, citing the fact that back then he was arrogant, egotistical, and angry. So the personality of the players definitely played a role in how and what they played.

His playing in GETS US ALL IN THE END is so great that no great guitar players and you tubers can cover and post their video in you tube. But 15 year old you tubers can exactly play Eruption and other solos by great guitar players. Just one minute of intro and three minutes of solo nobody can copy.

Placing his guitar abilities off to the side for a minute...what impresses me even more than the truly emotional way he plays is his complete control of a song. It's 'Musicianship'. Jeff never just plays a 'note'. There's always some nuance about the notes that he can't help but add that makes it otherworldly. He has complete understanding of odd time signatures and how chords go together and the most interesting notes to play with those chords. And on and on...

I can here the evolution of his playing in the early stuff yardbirds, solo stuff great for it's time and ground breaking along with Jimi , but leading into the fusion era starting at Blow by blow all the way to this day had the most impact on me , where he ended up going . It's cool to see the respect and appreciation from his peers , fun video thanks ! . and I met him on an elevator LIke D Aldrich ,in NYC he was with a producer that worked out of a studio I worked in at the time and he kind of responded the same way when i tried to talk guitar and how much his loved his work , when he saw me with cute girls later he seemed much more approachable lol , I knew not to bring up the guitar at that point, he's in my top 3 of all time

Of all the guitarists from the 60's, Jeff Beck has to be the one who has progressed the very most in terms of technique, feeling his notes, expressing emotions through the instrument and having a broad range of music styles all mixed making him also the most improvising genius! He advanced way beyond most players of the same period who I hate to say sound dated and stale by comparison but I have to say it like it is. I don't want this to sound the wrong way but for example, I don't think Eric Clapton is a good enough guitarist to play with Jeff Beck. It just wasn't a good fit. Eric Johnson, Satriani or Vai would be more suitable to play alongside a black belt player like Jeff but not Clapton because he's just not that caliber player! But that's just me! 🇨🇦🎸
