FAMOUS GRAVE-Singer Skeeter Davis (The End Of The World) In Nashville, TN

Today, my travels take me to Williamson Memorial Park Cemetery, in Franklin, Tennessee, just south of Nashville. I'm here to visit the famous grave of country singer and songwriter, Skeeter Davis.
Davis recorded her most popular song, The End of the World, in 1963. It was a number 1 hit, sold more than a million copeis and earned a gold disc or record. She received multiple Grammy awards during her music career and was a member of the Grand Ole Opry.
I also reveiw the Super 8 Hotel where I spent the night, in downtown Nashville, Tennessee.
Thanks for joining me on another nostalgic road trip to the cemetery.

1970's, I was a kid in the area near Philadelphia. K-Tel Record t.v. commercials played 10 second sound bites of the songs. End of the World was one that I heard a few seconds of.. for years. The name Skeeter seemed odd but as I became a man in my 50's & my wife died, the song became something other than a sound bite. I realized that whoever wrote End of the World probably wasn't inspired by teenaged love-gone-wrong. I am a Beatles fan but love most music. I learned to play End of the World on guitar. Skeeter had a lovely voice, southern twang when she sang the word 'end'. Nostalgia is painful & dear.

I used to attend the Lighthouse Church in Owen County, Kentucky , which is adjacent to Grant County where Skeeter grew up. Skeeter's brother and his wife attended the Lighthouse Church and Skeeter did a concert of both her secular and gospel songs one night after she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. She also gave her Christian testimony. She was a sweet lady and I wish we could have stayed with us a little longer here below. I don't remember when I first heard The End of the World, but it may have been at a restaurant that we always stopped at on the way to visit my mother's cousins in Indiana, which we did every year. The restaurant had little mini jukebox selectors on every table and country hits played all during the time we ate there. At home I pretty much heard mostly gospel music, with some Lawrence Welk and TV variety shows. We did not have a record player and seldom listened to radio. However, I remember hearing The End of the World in the 1960s.

Thank you Steve for making this video. My mom Shirley is the sister of Mary Francis Penick (Skeeter) and I'm her blood niece. Skeeter and I share the same birthday and I've got pics of us on the phone giving birthday wishes! When her and her band would come to ky. to visit in her limo we were the coolest kids on the street! She graduated from Dixie Heights high school and her pic hangs on the wall to this day! Skeeter Davis Hwy.22 is in Dryridge,Ky. I as a kid got to run all over the Opry and Stonewall Jackson's bus fascinated me, it was always parked in front! It was a wonderful perk getting into Opryland free! Bus Fare to Ky. was written for my grandma, she always kept a suitcase packed and rode the Greyhound to Ky. to come see us! I can't thank you enough for making this video,it truly means a lot,my aunt should not be FORGOTTEN! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

Hi Steve, I really liked " the end of the world " a lovely song by Skeeter Davis, but I have so many favorite singers that it's hard to pick some over the other, but a couple of my very favorites is anything by the Platters & I just loved to hear Nat King Cole. I'd love to see their grave sites if you ever visit the cemetery where they are laid to rest. Thank you so much for all the trips you take us on down memory lane. I love going on these trips with you & learning so much about people that we've forgotten about or never knew anything about them untill you take us on these trips with you. Thank you so much Steve for caring. May they all RIP 🙏

I'm 71 and it seems like I've loved Skeeter Davis forever. She had a really unique voice that I could never hear too much of. She also had so many songs I still love listening to. Of course, End of the World is one, but others I really love are Gonna Get Along Without You Now, Silver Threads and Golden Needles, I Can't Stay Mad At You, and No, Never. And if you haven't Heard it, check out her album "Here's The Answer". She responds to may great hit songs with a song that answers them. In fact, I just ordered one of her vinyl reacors since the sound so much better than electronic versions. RIP, Ms. Davis.

It's hard to fight back tears whilst listening to Skeeter's many beautiful songs, with that sweet sweet, innocent-sounding voice of her's, and I'm certainly not exactly the "sensitive type," either. I wasn't born until 1977, but I remember hearing the song "the End of the World," from time to time on US-99.5 (the main country music station in Cook County, Illinois/the Chicago-area), and I couldn't remember who it was by, and luckily I had a notification from one of the many "vintage country music" KZread channels that I subscribe to, and there was a video with the songs of several different artists in a 45 minute/hour-long mix of classic country music, with "The End of the World" being the 1st song in the mix...the artist and song names were not listed in this particular video nor were they in the video description, so I had to do some internet searching to find out the artist of this beautiful song that I have always loved...I didn't even know the name of the song, but I took a couple of educated guesses, based on the lyrics, and I quickly found out the name of the song, and that it was by Skeeter Davis, so I've been "binge-listening" to here music for the past month. Furthermore, I've played many musical instruments throughout my life, and I've been teaching myself how to play the accordion for the last couple years (off and on), and I must say that this song *alone,* with its beautiful chord progressions, have really, *REALLY* helped me to better familiarize myself with the "button side" of my accordion 🪗; I basically understand how it works, but I'm still trying to visualize it in my mind -which is difficult to do, when you have to do it "by feel," unlike with piano or bass guitar (or just guitar, for that matter) as I have been playing piano and bass since the early 1980s and early 1990s, respectively, and while I *can* read music, 99% of the time I play by ear, as it is just the way I learn best.

I met her once in person .I was 16 years old and I was working as a waitress in this little restaurant one night. It was at Junction Illinois. She told me she was really grateful that the cafe had her songs on the jutebox.I followed her out to her white car and in her truck she had a lot of pictures of herself. She signed one and gave it to me.Ive lost it through out the years .I wish I still had it She was a real nice down to earth person.

Hello Steve. I don't remember Skeeter Davis but I do remember The End of the World. I heard Vonda Shepard's version. Going to give a listen to Skeeter Davis now. Thanks for introducing me to a new musical talent. I can't pick a favorite song but always love listening to Frank Sinatra and I grew up with the old beach bands....love those old guitars. Happy and safe trip.....wishing for less traffic.

Thanks for the upload, it appears the Nashville area isn't spending money on any meaningful infrastructure, that would explain the crazy traffic you were experiencing, thanks for the memories of Skeeter Davis, no doubt extremely underrated, millennials likely have no idea who she even was, I believe she was involved in a deadly car crash somewhere back in the 50's.

Omgosh Steve you REALLY took me back.I'm 50yo but when I was growing up I remember mom listening to "End of the world". To list my favs is tough because I have so,so many but right up there and possibly my #1 is Dusty Springfield "you don't have to say you love me" but also love "Fanny(be tender with my love" The Carpenter's "Rainy days and Monday's " Aretha Franklin "The house that jack built" as well as her version of "Bridge over troubled water" ...there are just so,so many that for me would be impossible to name my very, very favorite but Dusty is and possibly always will be my favorite singer from that era .Btw,I live 1hr 15mins from Nashville in Chattanooga and on this stormy day you have me reminiscing on my early years and have even dropped a few tears. 😉😉
