Family test - does this SUV offer more than just good value? Mitsubishi Outlander Exceed 2023 review

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The Mitsubishi Outlander SUV range has always been big on value. But is the 7 seater SUV impressive in other ways? Richard Berry spent four months with the $50K Exceed model to find out.
In this review, you'll see how the 2023 Outlander fit in to his life, with a family of four (yes, a new Berry has arrived), and you'll also get a run down on the value for money based on the 2023 model's pricing and specifications, not to mention what Richard thought of the petrol engine and all-wheel drive (AWD) this version gets.
You might be surprised to learn about his recorded fuel efficiency / petrol consumption over four months and more than 3000km of driving, too - and you will also find his take on the safety technology and equipment, space and practicality on offer in this Mitsubishi crossover after some serious life experience with it.
Is it a better bet than a Toyota RAV4, Subaru Forester, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, or any other midsize SUV? Watch the video to find out, or read his detailed test by hitting the link below.

We bought our exceed in June last year and I have to disagree with you on your comments on the ride. We live in Nth Qld where the roads up here leave a lot to be desired & we don’t have any issues with the ride. My wife and I also just returned from a round trip of roughly 5500 kms to south Australia and this car is just fantastic to travel in. Fuel economy on the trip around 7ltrs/100km highway & 8 to 9 around town. Beautiful car 😍

I've just past 3600km in my Tourer. I consistently average 8.0ltrs per 100km around town. Dipping down into the 6's on a run from Brisbane to Gold Coast, but I do use economy setting whenever appropriate 😉. Otherwise agree with everything else. I'm still getting used to the size particularly in drive-throughs but the 360 cameras help heaps.

I'm in the States also, in the Philadelphia suburbs. I have a 2016 Lancer with a 5 speed manual with 193,000 miles on it. Original clutch and the only thing I've had to replace other than tires, brakes, and oil is the blower motor for AC and heat. This car has been bulletproof. I'm seriously considering a 20223 Outlander, but my only concern is highway driving with the Outlander. Does it have enough power to make lane changes when everyone else is racing around driving 20 miles over the speed limit? What do you think?

I'd love to see more reviews showing a rear facing baby capsule, especially in smaller cars. We have to both do either a drop off or a pick up each day so need to be able to fit a capsule in both cars, so can't just put a capsule in the larger "family" car. Also need one in the smaller secondary car.

Just get a set of 18-inch wheels and softer tires, then all your problems are solved. Only stupid car manufacturers would put 20-inch wheels on cars, resulting in slower acceleration, poorer fuel economy, and harsher ride. Tires make a very noticeable difference, these are my recommendation for comfortable ride yet decent handling: Vredestein Quatrac Pro Yokohama AVID Ascend GT Pirelli Cinturato P7 All Season Plus II

I bought a brand new Mitsubishi asx in 2016. Drove it off the lot and around the first round about I slightly went over the round about. The plastic on the driver side A pillar came off, I drove right back into the dealer and showed them. They said when did you buy the car. I said 7 minutes ago from your mum. They looked at me like it was a crime to bring the car back after I drove it off the lot. Job done. Transaction complete. I then realised Mitsubishi never again. I still have the asx. When you accelerate the whole car vibrates. I'm about to buy a new car. No hurry. But never Mitsubishi again.

I disagree with it being thirsty. I have the top trim SEL Touring S-AWC. It’s all about your driving style and conditions. Last weekends, I went on a 1200 mile road trip mostly highway miles with 4 adults and a packed cargo area. Drove in Eco drive mode and cruise control the whole time. Got over 500 miles before I decided to fill up. It indicated 67 miles left until empty. The passengers couldn’t believe how far we went before refueling. They also loved a how luxurious, comfortable and quiet the cabin was. We were all enjoying the audio system as well singing along most of the songs on my playlist. The only drawback was it doesn’t have an aux port so we couldn’t hook up a carpool karaoke microphone someone brought but that didn’t stop us from singing at the top of our lungs.

Mitusbishi should do like nissan and use the 1.5 turbo 3 cylinder power train. Or develop their own 1.5 3 cylinder petrol. I think you are correct about the wheels in the outlander. It's too big. Mitsubishi should have gone for 17" rims and more rubber. The fuel economy would have been better as well.

I like this review's look at how this vehicle assists in family life. The boot of the Outlander has never been its strongest suit, as are the 3rd row seats(in the previous generation they were even more horrendous for adults or anyone above 5'5"). But yeah if you have a family this is a car you can shortlist and not a hatchback as some other Aussie car reviewers would suggest.

If you drive sporty the 2.5l engine will consume around 10L, but if you're just a bit careful, consumption drops dramatically. I like accelerating to speed limit, but then soften my drive, and I get under 8L. I strongly disagree with your comment that it's thirsty...

If I were to review, I would review the same as well. yep, that is true, fuel economy is not that good. A couple of things that I found out other than in your review. Wireless charging is good, but the phone wobbles on the road, it doesn't charge very well, at least my phone, 2nd issue is coffee cup holders, these are in a weird position, and problematic when picking up and putting it back and because of big wheels, suspension needs to a bit better, it is not very good absorbing the bumps. I think a good suspension makes the car more expensive.
