New subscriber here. I have enjoyed watching the buildout of your van and your travel adventures with you daughter. I am an Army veteran and also grew up in a military family where we had a chance to travel and live in several different states. Those were great memories for me and my siblings. So, I think its fantastic that you are traveling with your daughter and allowing her to see many different places. She will always cherish those memories when she grows older. Anyway, safe travels to you and your daughter.

Thanks for taking the time to create and share these videos! You have some excellent van build ideas that will inspire some of my future builds. I’m currently torn between a pop up truck camper or a van for a family of 4, but seeing the versatility of your designs is pushing me towards a van. I love the front swivel seat and the sliding back seat that opens up so much interior space. Thanks again!

Guess what my previous setup was? A Toyota pickup with a 4Wheel Pop up camper. I thought it was the perfect solution but sold it after 8 months of use. It was better than a pull trailer and more offroad capable than any van including 4x4 vans, but taking the camper on and off or dealing with daily-driving a vehicle with it on gets old. The van just drives nicer and gets way better fuel economy. Easy to go back and forth from the cockpit to the living area, more space because you can have overhead cabinets, diesel heating and much better insulation, lots of pros. Don’t rule out a pop up but some things to consider. And thank you for the kind words. I particularly enjoy sharing the travel videos.

@@ourkaravan thanks for the insight! I’m currently looking at an F250, double cab, regular bed, then converting it to a flat bed for the extra storage and then building out a pop up camper...or a Ford Transit AWD, medium roof, long wheelbase. The F250 and Transit are very similar in size, but obviously the van is way more comfortable, more livable and gets better gas mileage, while the the “offroadability” of the F250 is vastly superior. I’m leaning a bit towards the Transit AWD with a mild lift so I can fit some larger all terrain tires. I reckon I can get to the majority of places with this set up. Also if I’m honest with myself, 80% to 90% of my driving will be on the freeway, but at the same time I’d hate to miss out on an area because I can’t make it there.

Our van is not 4wd, but it’s capable of going deeper into the backcountry than I’m willing to take it. Bashing around and rock crawling just aren’t fun in a loaded vehicle. Don’t get me wrong, we are offroad most of our adventures, but not places where access is really difficult-we save our Toyota 4Runner for that.

Seeing you riding w your daughter and her gaining experience put a smile on my face. She is a mountain biking animal! Planning my van build for my family before my boys get too big. Just have to decide on 4X4 regular or extended Transit. If you have thoughts after your trip on the various legths of Sprinters, it would be great. I'm going to the van show in Hood River, OR in June to see some in person. Thanks.

It all comes down to personal preference. A larger van might be just slightly more limited in where it can go but once you get there the extra space is nice. I wouldn’t discount a larger van in the future but mine is as long as what will fit in my current driveway and the room inside is enough. Happy shopping and thanks for the nice comments!

Hi Steve, it’s Minwax semi gloss polyurethane. It’s held up great, seriously not a single flaw other than my inability to prevent some dust in the final finish. There’s a van tour coming out soon on someone else’s channel and you can see how everything has held up after 4.5 years of use. Spoiler alert, the van is holding up great.
