Family Holiday on the Isle of Man - Summer 1962

This narrated slideshow documents our summer family holiday in 1962.
I have not attempted to crop any of the slides, so they are shown in their original aspect ratio. Likewise, I have not attempted to 'clean up' the audio narration. What you see here, therefore (excluding the noise of a slide projector cooling fan), is the presentation as seen back in 1962.
I assembled this presentation and rendered it into HD video solely using the Pictures-to-Exe computer program, which provides a quick and simple workflow. The video is best viewed here in 720p format, at full screen.

Great video! I moved to the Isle of Man last year and its really interesting to see these places in 1962 and what they look like today. Your slide of railway at Groudle Glen would be of great interest to those running the railway these days and in the background on that slide is Howstrake camp, long since gone, and there are not many photos of that camp around.

Absolutely fascinating. Thanks for showing the video. Port Soderick railway station has been renovated and is a smart private house. All the buildings at Port Soderick beach have been demolished, but, it is still a popular spot for a walk. We had a walk up the cliffs in Laxey the other day and took an almost identical photo of the old Laxey and the beach to the one your dad took. I must compare mine to your dads, although, not much has changed! Shame about the weather, but, that's the IoM for you. I think we all have a photo of the Mountain Railway tram in similar cold, wet, windy, foggy conditions!! Thanks again, Phil

I liked the photo of 'POLAR BEAR' 2-4-0T William Bagnall on the Groudle Glen Railway. The locomotive is in the so called "Fairground Livery" By the time of your visit the line was approaching the end of its life. Prior to its rescue and restoration. At the time of your visit 'POLAR BEAR' was the only working locomotive. As the original Bagnall built loco 'SEA LION' had been out of service since 1939. It was eventually restored with help from BNFL at Sellafield. Today it can be found working on the line. However 'POLAR BEAR' is now at The Chalk Pit Museum at Amberley in West Sussex. It occasionally returns to Groudle Glen for special occasions. A very good friend of mine visited the island with his parents also during the summer of 1962. He asked his Dad (who at the time was a Head Teacher) if he could visit the railway! To be told "Don't be silly. There are no trains down there. Trouble is that you have steam on the brain!" At that point they heard 'POLAR BEAR' whistle! So my friends Dad had to eat his words!

1962 was the first year I visited the island though my parents knew it well. We camped at a farm called Ballaspit near Tynwald. That was my last year at school in the IOM and I left the island at the end of the year. Happy memories. By the way, one slide has been reversed. The commentary says the war memorial is on the right but it is shown on the left. Commentary is correct.

Only two corrections, you photographed SEACOMBE ferry stage not Birkenhead, and Onchan is pronounced, On kan. We went mainly in the 1970s, including the dreadful evening that Summerland burned down with fifty poor souls cremated. The complex was opened in 1971 and for three summers we promised to go there but thankfully never made it. We went to Douglas Head that evening anyway and saw the fire. Anyway to happier times did you not find the IOMSPCo ships whistles deafening? They made you jump especially the 1930 Lady Of Mann that SCREAMED! Anyway its a fascinating set of photos and thanks for sharing Them!

Hi Paul, thanks for the corrections. Obviously my Dad slipped up with identifying the ferry stage and pronunciation. 10 years too late to tell him off, sadly. As for the ferry whistles, I can't remember that - I was 8 at the time and it's a _long_ while ago - I would probably have found it very exciting at the time! The memories I do have of the IOM were good, and I'd like to visit again - and I love ferries, wherever they are, and no matter how loud they are :-) Cheers!

Your slide of Onchan head at night is reversed :-) Overall your slides are fantastic - 35mm? You will also be amazed to see what Port Soderick is like today - sadly derelict. However, its not all bad, since Laxey Wheel is now again fully working. Are these all the slides of the Isle of Man you have? Did you go anywhere else on Holiday and took slides and would be willing to share them? Many thanks.

I was a little suspicious about the orientation of the night shots, but these were scanned in a hurry along with 6,000 others in their collection, and some errors crept in! I'm prioritizing slide shows for which I have my parents' recorded narration, which is not many. Also, some have music in the background, which gives problems with KZread. I may do some more if I can find the time, but no more of the Isle of Man, unfortunately. It's certainly a place I intend to visit again.

And yes, all 35mm slides - generally Kodachrome (25 ISO/ASA) at that time. Dad used an Agfa Silette viewfinder camera (1960 vintage) with separate light meter, rangefinder and bulb flashgun.

Compared to the rest of the UK, my home city of Leicester was unusual in having its industrial shutdown (not a common thing these days) in the first 2 weeks of July. That seemed to guarantee we had more than our fair share of rainy holidays. We always thought we took the weather with us - now you have confirmed it!
