FAMILY CAMPING during STORM EVERT (Dorset Camp near the coast in strong winds)

We took the family camping on the Dorset coast for four nights. On the First night, Storm Evert arrived so a tense night of battening down the hatches ensued and fighting to keep our tent up against strong gale forced winds.

Air tents work very well in high winds if erected properly. Do not over-inflate and peg out properly. The nice thing is that the air tubes will give and the tent partially collapse in strong wind but then just right itself again. I carry extra guy lines for one side only and use them on the windy side if ever necessary. I have used them on poled tents before but never bothered with the air tent.

It reminds me of our fam camping too last week. It was windy and rainy that it flattens some of the tent in the campground. Was so glad we used our opalus 3 that we can cook inside the tent and it stands against the strong wind and rain for 24hrs. Keep safe and have fun.

I have the Berghaus air 6. I have taken it out in all kinds of horrific weather. If you get the air pressure right ( gauge supplied with markings ) and peg it well. It will take a good kickin. I can also recommend the Berghaus gazebo. Good space to sit when the heavens open up. 4 walls and fly net. I would say the only down side is the size of the bags. Takes a lot of boot space. Also never let in a drop of water.

We were camping in Cornwall right on the coast last August year and the year before and survived two named storms in a Vango Airbeam family tent. If you get the pressures right they will flatten but just pop back up. There were similar 8 man poled tents that were literally destroyed where their poles all snapped and fabric ripped. Wouldn’t be in a storm in any other type of family sized tent now.

We were in that storm in South Cornwall, we were in a bell tent, it barely moved! It was our first time in that tent as we have been in a vango air tent before that in 50mph+ winds with no problems. The air tents survived but the cheaper poled tents literally tore to shreds! The air tents are meant to collapse, then they pop back up. But don't over or under inflate that is the key. We always hit a huge storm whenever we go away!

Makes great memories. I remember camping with the family in Wales 2011 during a storm. The tent had polycarbonate poles and they were useless. Airbeam tents were just coming out but they faired no better. I vowed to get a better tent. Ended up with a vango maritza 700. Steel frame tent and absolutely huge. No probs with wind. Bit heavy with it being g steel framed buy worth it for piece of mind. Love all your vids btw.

I have a steel-framed 8-man Coleman Festival Octagon, & I'm always in 2 minds about it. On the 1 hand, the frame truly does feel bomb-proof - like I could beat a croc to death with the bag & still have it pop up just lovely. On the other hand, the thing has the bloody wind profile of the Great Pyramid of Giza, so I don't know. I try to take a smaller tent if I'm expecting storms, but then I _do_ miss the living space, once I'm stuck inside! 😂

Hey Trev, I have a Berghaus Air 6XL and it's withstood winds of constant speed of 35mph, with gusts of 50mph. Our friends had the same tent, pitched just a few metres from us, and their's was flattened in the same storm (they had to spend the night in their car). The difference? Well, we were side into the wind, decent pegs for the guys, and were slightly over max pressure in the airbeams (our friends were slightly under). There were a couple of points in the night where the beams folded, but they had enough pressure to just pop back up. Literally every other family sized tent on the campsite was flattened - broken poles everywhere! So I don't think durability is the issue with inflatable tents, if they're pitched correctly. The biggest issue we have with ours is it's just so big and heavy when packed. With a child and a dog, we can't fit the Air 6XL and minimal gear into our Audi Q3, with a 420L roof box packed tight. We have to take a second car (all this faff is one of the reasons I've gotten into the more simple pleasures of wild camping). So, yeah, I wouldn't let (lack of) durability put you off inflatable tents if you have a big enough vehicle to get one into.

We were camping on the Isles of Scilly that night and we took the full brunt of Storm Evert. There was an anemometer on the campsite which recorded 69mph wind (although I did notice they'd mounted it behind a tree, so God only knows what some of the gusts were (definitely approaching hurricane speed). The wind was so bad that there was a rescue helicopter about 300 yards downwind winching people off a yacht, yet we never heard it above the wind! Pretty much all of the airbeam and fibreglass pole tents were flattened and the only tents that survived were the Outwell pole tents and proper canvas bell tents. Some small tents pitched behind walls and hedges survived. It was a miserable night and most of us had to trudge to the community centre with sleeping bags and mats under our arms.

great opportunity to see what tents performed the best in bad weather at someone else’s expense 😂😂 having done camping your experience kicked in and you did the right thing in adding extra guy lines to the poles and having the tent pointy end facing the wind …. i’ve said this before but “all the best memories are made in adversity” …. your kids are going to remember this trip and ‘dad running about outside saving the tent’ for the rest of their lives 👍👍 😄😄ATB Dave Mc

Trev We camp at the (tent graveyard) Shell Island. The destroyer of tents. It can be so bad, they will give you credit fo days you have not used. If your tent is destroyed. On a bad weekend, I walked the site and assessed the damage. The reason was to see which tents were still standing. Outwell we’re the outright winners. I bought an outwell concord. That same week. It’s an air beam. It’s a fantastic poly cotton tent. Storm guys. Warm in the cold cool in the heat. My kids lend it. So I’ve bought another one. It’s expensive. But it’s tested to gale force nine. We go to shell island because of the space. 20 meter rule unless camping next to family friends. At the moment the concord has a clean sheet against the tent graveyard. Give it a look. I think your family will love it. Fabulous tents 🔥

Hope you managed a good holiday despite the weather. We have a Vango Rome Air tent and we had two storms last year with 50mph winds in Bude. It did amazingly well. We found the opposite all the pole tents were destroyed in the morning but all air tents survived the week. Storm guying seems to be the key with big tents

It was a good holiday, and the rest of the nights was like luxury in comparison. To be fair, there was a mixed bag of pole and airtents that survived and were destroyed in the end.

Good video, just seen it! Yeah that looked pretty bad but you seemed to have guyed your tent out effectively which helped a lot. I see so many tent failures resulting from improper pitching and guying out. I experienced this about 12yrs ago in Snowdonia where i had an enormous tent, one day all hell broke loose weather wise, i guyed it out with the ropes facing the wind direction using foot-long v-groove stakes, and it stood firm but most of the other tents on site were flattened or damaged!

  • @cairnscrow8713
    @cairnscrow87132 жыл бұрын

Well that was different, great vid. Take a look at Outwell air tents. We have emerged safely from extreme stormy nights to find 80% of tents on site down the morning after. Getting the correct pressure for the weather and guying/ pegging out is 'absolute key'. We have an Outwell 'smart air' Hornet 6sa and it has never let us down, even in 60mph, 70 gusts. It's usually user error when air tents fail, with the exception that some are just poorly designed by being way too wide on the upper beams. ''''Just my opinion''' 😁 Basically avoid very wide tents. My all time favourites were the old chalet style, canvas, steel pole tents

putting a tent up correctly helps. The amount of tents you see which are loose is crazy. If it's got creases, then it's a no. 'Y' pegs make a huge difference too.. and are the first things to upgrade.

Then everyone rushed to pack down leaving you on your own in an empty field🤣😂🤣 Only joke mate, great video and it looked like the kids enjoyed it. I have the berghaus air 6xl. Last year at the Lake District we were in similar conditions and only one air beam dropped down once in really high winds when all the tents around us were being destroyed. So maybe it’s to do with the air pressure you put in the tubes or how they’ve pegged it out. We are going Cornwall in 2 weeks and hoping the weather clears up abit

I remember as a child camping at a campsite on top of some cliffs in Dorset - about 50 years ago. My Dad bought a very expensive canvas family tent and this was its' first outing. The first night was very windy, everyone got woken up as the winds got stronger. People were taking their tents down and many ended up over the cliff in the sea. We had to hold onto the poles to stop ours going off down the cliff. Dad managed to get it down, after much shouting at us to hold onto it. It was completely covered in mud. We had to drive home and then dry it out. Many people, even in caravans gave uo that night as it was so noisy. Fun times as a kid in the 70's :)
