FALL OF THE JEDI: A Single Film Star Wars Prequel Edit

Музыка

With this edit I attempted to distill the Star Wars prequels down to a single movie, that if viewed for the first time would stand on its own and make complete sense to the viewer. My goal was to present the story of Anakin Skywalker in the style of a Shakespearean tragedy, while bending Anakin's character arc from the self serving whiner in the original, to a man corrupted by vaulting ambition and immense power.
I recommend viewing FALL OF THE JEDI after episodes IV and V, as if it's an extended flashback, before finishing the Anakin Skywalker saga with RETURN OF THE JEDI.
I hope you enjoy watching it as much as I did editing it!

I think it relied too much on the audience having seen the prequels as they are already. Right from the start, there's no reason for kid Anakin to be in one of the Naboo Starfighters. Some of the other leaps in narrative rely on the audience being aware of what was edited out. It's a valiant effort and herculean task, regardless. I applaud the work put into it. By far my FAVORITE departure was the use of the sequel trailer music over the ending montage.

Anakin makes sense flying the Starfighter. It demonstrates the early rambunctious and strong willed, forward-moving character of our later fallen hero. A perfect introduction to the same character who frequently finds himself in those kinds of situations. Well done Greg. I enjoyed this!

It would work better, perhaps, if Anakin was already at Hayden's age in that scene. We know from the OT that Anakin was a great star pilot, so it makes sense to show him in at the action from the start. It's nice that Anakin mentions Qui Gon and then we cut to Qui Gon in the saber fight.

IMO, the only reason this version "works" is because the intended viewers have already seen the prequels in their original form. A good test would be to show this cut to someone who has never seen the prequels before. If it makes sense to an impartial audience, it works great. Otherwise, I love it. Brilliant work.

I've never seen them, and it makes sense to me. The problem is that everything about the Star Wars universe is awful, because hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a blaster at your side. There is too much nonsense in the whole mix, and not enough science for my science fiction cravings. Sure, i loved episodes IV, V and VI when I was a kid, but they just don't hold up apart from Han Solo's antiheroic assertion.... which basically killed the whole thing for me, because he was absolutely right.

  • @Hamatabo

Taxi Rob I mean like... ow my heart. but also star wars isn’t really sci fi its a space opera. It tells a dramatic story that happens to be in space. The sci fi elements are cool and add to the mystery of the universe but are not necessarily required to make sense like star trek does (most of the time). Lightsabers are badass and symbolic but it doesn’t really matter how they work. also the “hokey religion” is absolutely a match for a blaster because they literally show just how powerful the force is against blasters, basically no one can shoot a jedi unless they’re distracted. A lightsaber isn’t a replacement for common sense but it is a very powerful weapon that only fell out of fashion because jedi were the only ones who could make them iirc

Wait, so Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon are on the Federal Planet fighting Darth Maul while Naboo fighters blow the whole thing up? Obi even takes his time to hold Qui-Gon in his arms... And Jango attacks Obis ship out of a sudden and just keeps landing on the planet though he surely knows the intruder is alive? That aside the cuts make many scenes pretty weird. Like, why is a kid in a spaceship attacking a base? or how did this 55:01 go to 55:45? Is the command central of the Invisible Hand always empty? Even during war?? Obi-Wan became a simple sidekick. he is one (if not the most) important person in Anakins life (even if the latter one wouldn't admit that). And btw you cut out nearly every meme source!

The segment following 1:30:00 I think is some wonderful editing. Here we see a real threat, Palpatine, the dark lord of the sith, and we feel the menace there, then right after we see the Jedi winning. Without grievous there is a lack of threat from the opposition, a real sense the war is ramping down, which is seen in their victories and battles, but something feels off, as the audience knows that a larger threat is still out there, that everything is about to go wrong; so the somewhat menacing music fits perfectly to those battles. Well done.

I like this as a noir edit, in particular the opening sequence and the transition between the end of episode 2 and beginning of episode 3. I think in the opening crawl when referring to the space battle around Naboo you could have mentioned Anakin as a child prodigy pilot of something to that effect. I would not have cut out Anakin's slaughter of tusken raiders, that is all.

Fantastic. And you're right to say this should be viewed after Empire. Watching this story before the others ruins not only the surprise about Vader, but also the surprise about Yoda. People forget that his reveal was a surprise, too. This was a badly made trilogy, but it had some great elements that could be distilled into a good flashback. Well done.

Just finished watching, and I have to say the editor DID accomplish what he set out to do. Now, I do think the story does work best as a trilogy, warts and all, if you had to compress it into one film, this was probably close to the best you could do. It left out a few key points and plot-lines, but overall it tells the story well. If I had seen this before seeing the trilogy, I might have been confused at certain points, and it could use some sort of transition to show the passage of time, but as just a straight edit without any added effects, it's good.

i loved the ending...using the Force Awakens trailer music works surprisingly well. it's such a tragic tale of love & loss. the last act of Revenge of the Sith is something I actually find hard to watch without a few tears. even though I'm 53 I'm not ashamed to admit it. the quality of Episodes 1 to 6 is still just incredible. Disney haven't got a hope of making something worthy of the Star Wars name. very good edit - there's a few bits I'd leave in like Anakin's first time losing it & slaughtering sand people who raped & killed Smee & the locket Anakin gave to Padme that you see in her hands at the funeral (it 's just a little thing but it's so sad & melancholy - it hits u that there's nothing left) but generally excellent stuff

Damn. That was truly enjoyable. It must have taken you a very long time to do this fan edit. Any criticisms that came to mind while watching it were due to my prior knowledge of the original trilogy and my awareness of what footage you chose to exclude that I was particularly fond of, which wasn't that much to begin with. Two or three scenes at most. But once I began to pretend this was the first time I was watching any of this footage, it allowed me to more deeply enjoy and appreciate your fan edit. Way to go. Really, I must commend you. What a joy this was to watch. I hope it never gets taken down, since I really enjoyed this version. It also increases the appreciation for the original source material it's based off. Bravo dude. I'll be watching this again.

Watching through this, adding in my 2c. The intro straight into the space battle/maul confrontation needs more explanation, whether that is from the title scroll, or screen time. I think Mace Windu telling Anakin: "dont use registered transport, travel as refugees" is required to explain the difference between the sleek elegant transport to Coruscant, and the rough, dirty transport to Naboo since its a high ranking senator. The scene where Anakin tells Padme (on Naboo in the throne room) that he is in charge of security, then having Padme tell him she knows better should be included - it would have also added on Obi Wan telling Anakin "and you will know your place" This Geonosis/Kamino arc doesnt fit in my opinion, i think the traditional Kamino with obi wan meeting Jango, Jango fleeing, and obi wan tracking Jango to Geonosis (so no confrontation) would have been a better choice. C3P0 recognising Padme should have been cut, since it hasnt been shown that C3P0 has met Padme before. The seen where Anakin tells Padme she needs to stay with Owen/Beru should have been cut directly to Anakin leaving on the speeder. Anakin slaughtering the Tuskens should have been kept, showed the anger inside him, and him tapping into the dark side, his hatred for the sand people. Anakin saying "he killed them all" should have been kept, further reinforcing his hatred" Dooku telling kenobi "I can assure you, there are no bounty hunters here" should be kept so he answers Kenobi's question/tries to mislead kenobi. Anakin telling "smoke stacks, we can land there" (or whatever the line is) should have been kept, shows that he has a vast mechanical knowledge, and the scale of the droid manufacturing. More of the execution arena, lots of cuts with the characters all over the place The scene where padme's back is sliced should be there to explain why her back is cut up The scene where the chanceller is granted emergency powers and creates an army is needed, and some of the Kamino arc to explain the clones/Jango's significance. Dooku leaving the hanger on a speeder, the gunship intercepting Dooku, Dooku waving off his fighters, cut to Anakin & Kenobi jumping of the gunship, then it is destroyed by the fighters. I think this is needed to explain how Anakin/Kenobi got to Dooku. A lot of Anakin/padme wedding could have been cut. EP3 Need some transition between EP2&3 Dooku bringing the platform down on Kenobi could have been cut, same with Anakin pulling Kenobi out from under, but still keeping Dooku forcing Kenobi into the railing and Anakin's "he seems to be all right". Anything relating to how they took the bridge of the ship should be there, instead of finding it vacant. Anakin's dreams of padme should be audio only since there were no scenes of Anakins mother in dreams. Scene of Anakin running up the opera steps could have been cut, he was already running in the next scene to the doorway to show urgency. HOW DARE YOU REMOVE "HIGH GROUND"!!! Im torn, on one hand I think having vader crush everything around him is needed, but on the other i think adding anything else to Anakin/Vader's ending would ruin the feel. And lastly, I dont feel as though the final theme fits. I think Lucas King's 'Star Wars - Imperial March | Heroic Version | Piano & Orchestra' or something else would fit much more appropriately. Not too bad mate, A lot of unnecessary stuff, the awkward Anakin/Padme scenes have been cut which is nice. I dont feel like this takes away/missing anything overly major, it has the Star Wars Feels that the movies do. Another iteration of this cut and I think you would be right on the money. Well Bloody Done. Probably shows some of the major complaints with the Prequels, so much filler, characters that could be taken out without affecting the main storyline (RIP Grevious, Boba, and others)

Only a couple of minutes in, and I'm not digging this edit. Don't care for the quick "Old Republic Jedi" montage before the opening crawl. Aesthetically, not SW at all. The music during the action sequences has "climax" written all over it (as it was intended by John Williams), and doesn't at all fit an opening scene. Then, we see a little boy piloting a space fighter. We don't know that he's Anakin Skywalker at this point, let alone have any idea why he is engaged in battle in a starfighter. The lack of context is way too jarring.

agreed. Here is a long winded review. 5 Minutes in: I have no idea why a lone ship would approach what looks like a fleet of some kind of ships from the front, and why a few squadrons of some, admittedly, cool lookings yellow space ships approach what I just now found to be a single MASSIVE ship. The scroll at the beginning mentioned a Queen with a small group of security forces...are those them? Why would the Queen attack herself and thus risk her own life? Where is the Queen? Which one is she? Who is that kid? Oh neat R2 is apparently there...who the hell is Qui-Gon? Oh cool some climaxy music...who are those two Jedi? and I guess that's Darth Maul...why is he alone? Where is the Emperor? Saber fight looks neat...the fuck is going on? 10 minutes in: Where did the rest of the fleet go? Why does that surviving Jedi promise to train the twerp? Who are these people? The fuck is that thing? Is that Sam Jackson next to Yoda? Awesome! But who is he? Why does the foreboding music cue hit on three people? A jedi(I guess), lome painted lady, and some old guy...who are they? 15 minutes in: Who is the "Senator" and why do I care? The shiney shiip looks awesome, who makes those and the yellow fighters? Oh so Padme is the senator...what happened to the Queen? I guess shes on Naboo. Ani? They've met before? When and where? R2 is there to? He gets around. Wait is the kid from before Ani? He got trained I guess...awesome...who is that other Jedi? If you haven't taken the point yet...it's really shittier writing from someone trying to eliminate really shitty writing.

I really enjoyed this for the most part, I LOVED the edit at 1:10:55 that was a really cool transition between episodes 2 and 3. I personally wish the death of Anakin's mother and her funeral weren't cut down so much. Also, it was a pretty bold choice to gut all of General Grievous, but it surprisingly worked for the context of this edit. I also think it was a mistake to cut the rise of the empire montage that intercuts with Anakin slaughtering the separatists, I definitely would've kept that in. The opening is a little awkward, but I don't think all of the comments are giving this version (and the audience) enough credit. The opening crawl perfectly makes it clear who the jedi are and the Sith they are fighting. The opening crawl just needed to be a bit longer. And yeah, we don't know why a kid is in a spaceship. But then we see a jedi master die, and his dying wish to his apprentice is "train the boy". After that, we see the masters funeral and his apprentice telling the same boy we saw in the space battle that he will be a jedi. So, we know everything we need to know about these characters in just a few minutes. You just have to keep watching for a few minutes to understand the full context of what is going on. This edit reminded me of epics like Excalibur that span many years over the course of just one film. It can be done, I just think this cut would've benefited from an extra 20 minutes or so. But trimming down a lot of the jar jar stuff and the bad love dialogue was nice, that always helps. If this version was over 3 hours long, I would start it with Queen Amidala and the jedi arriving on tatooine, since that's pretty much where the story really starts honestly. But how DARE you cut out Obi wans famous line about the HIGH GROUND! You can't mess with the high ground, it's so essential! You live and die by the high ground. High ground is love, high ground is life...

The way I see this edit is that it is not made to be a complete coherent work but rather the framework of a different vision. Having the climax of the Phantom Menace in the beginning here is brilliant. Use your imagination to fill in the incoherencies. When I watched this, it made me think just how awesome the prequels might have been as a high-budget three-season TV series (each season having maybe four or five episodes each) rather than full-fledge movies. The plot points (such as the political side of the story, the "pod-racing", the discovery of the clones, the fight and revenge against Jango Fett, etc.) would be so much more interesting fleshed -out individually in 45 minute episodes.

This edit is phenomenal. It's amazing how much bloat has been cut out. I was impressed that the edit managed to merge Kamino and Geonosis into a single planet, and that General Grievous was cut out entirely without any real damage to the story whatsoever. And of course the ejection of so many terrible, useless scenes, like the "I hate sand" monologue everyone hates, and the final goofy "NOOOOOOOOOOO!" Even the reveal of Leia as Luke's sister is kept secret. This is frankly a masterpiece of cutting room decision making, especially given the extremely problematic sources. Well done.

In the beginning of episode its pretty simply to understand that this young man has the hots for padme and that he already resents obi wan. No other character from the Phantom Menace really shows up or matters. Honestly you could just skip the first film entirely and miss nothing of value.

It seems odd to start off in that battle but I kind of like it. I only wish we had just a little bit more on what's going on and a name drop for the boy before we see him all grown up. It's cool to meet a pair of Jedi in the midst of a fight. Certainly gives the character of Obi won a big entrance. I do feel very excited when Obi's Master says his name for the first time in the film after being killed. It's actually a satisfying beat for a prequel. knowing the character or Obi Won but not yet knowing that's who I'm looking at is a nice moment it centers the Prequel around him and the moment he took on Ani as his apprentice.

Wow, I just finished watching it and I have to say you did a great job. You focused on the main story, Anikan's rise and fall. Beginning with the best of the first bad movie was excellent and it was nice to focus more on Anikan and Kenobi's relationship. Delighted you took out all the boring politics, most of the cringy love scenes and the silly characters like Binks and the Cartoonish Grievous. I only heard "Roger roger" once which was a blessing, those droids had ridiculous voices and dialogue. I see people here complaining about the Geonosis/Kamino error but you can only work with what you have. I like the way you kept Jango Fett mysterious too. I also like that you cut out the American diner and the football game on the big screen in the bar, that stuff took me out of the star wars universe when I saw Clones, too American and cheesy. Great job and thanks for making it.

My few “complaints” if you ever want to do another alternate cut: The sand people sequence should have been included somehow and at least a little context with qui gon and young anakin… The deleted scenes with Padme’s family would’ve been a nice touch too and I feel like Grievous was cut pretty heavy? However, I’m knitpicking. This is my second favorite fan edit (following one that cuts ROTS, it’s deleted scenes, the clone wars, & parts of the bad batch S1 premiere) so seriously, props to the editing. My favorite artistic type of change was the “silent” ending more reminiscent of the originals. It explained without it having to be said there. A very good edit/fan cut from someone with all of them in just about every format down to records with the movies audio & a narrator… 😂. This is what I’d show someone if they didn’t want to sit through all the prequels at this point or to get them interested.

If you want to start off with the Maul battle, you'd have to cut out any scenes with Ani, and then find a way to reintroduce him on Tattoine later. Probably not possible without shooting nw scenes or at minimum dubbing in new audio.

Obviously from the comments, everyone has their own favorite parts and would leave in or take out slightly different things, but your take on the prequel trilogy reminded me why i loved Star Wars and gave me the entire range of emotions i remembered. It flew by too-- At this point, trimming the fat on those first two films, especially, really helps the story move.......I think with another pass on the scripts and the right edit, the prequels could have as good as the originals....its a shame George didnt let others help him like he did with the OT. But whatever--- they still have the heart and message of Star Wars...with wonderful characters -- lovable heroes and sinister villains.....the new Disney Star Wars lacks everything that made these films special..... Thanks Again for your work!
