Fall Medlar (Mespilus germanica) Harvest

It is the weekend after Thanksgiving and the medlar fruits are ready to pick. Each one is in a different stage of bletting.

You can harvest them when they are still hard & store them in a cool dry place. They will blett in 2-3 weeks. Some folks put them on damp straw. We just toss them in a box. When they are ready they make wonderful jam and medlar cheese. 😊

Have you tried crossing the medlars with other rose-family members? I've read some interesting results have come about from such experiments. Also, where/how might one contact you to exchange seeds or plant material? If you're able and willing, that is.

I haven’t tried crossing them, do you remember the names of any of the papers you read? I am not really setup to exchange seeds or plant material at the moment. I just moved and an getting things setup at my new place.

The hybrid is referred to as "x Sorbomespilus 'Desertnaja' ". It was one of Michurin's projects, and it allegedly inherited some of the cinnamon-like flavor notes from the Medlar. More surprising is its lack of astringency, given its parentage. I tried to obtain a tree myself, but they seem to be absent from the States; they have them in Europe, though. There's also x Crataegomespilus dardarii (not to be confused with the graft chimera), which is said to have Medlar-like fruit, but I'm not sure if it's palatable. I found a document that lightly covers these hybrids and several others, titled: "Rosaceae Family Intergeneric Hybrids". The link doesn't always work, though. Link here: www.agroforestry.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/site-files-pdf/AGN_sample.pdf Burbank's Strawberry x Raspberry hybrid is missing from that document for some reason, but the relevant chapter of his book is available online. ⁂ Understood. Will you be growing the purple Dioscorea bulbifera this season? If not, could you point me in the right direction to find it? Edible air potatoes are so hard to find over here, I'm trying to collect as many accessions as I can for re-distribution to other growers. I have 2 accessions growing, and am in the process of acquiring 3 more.

Good afternoon ! Then you will sell the seeds? If you are selling, I am interested in buying! Thank you !

I am not selling any seeds. You are not the first to ask so perhaps it is something I will consider. The margin for time on seeds is pretty narrow, and that is something I keep in mind when looking at things.

How come only 15 fruits? What about the rest of the fruits on the tree?

I injured my back recently and didn’t want to climb the ladder by myself. I waited until I had help for the rest.
