Fakes & Frauds ["Scamite"]: Bumblebee jasper - what is it? and risks of handling it
In the series Fakes & Frauds ["Scamite" or "Belazeriet" in Dutch], I discuss #Bumblebee jasper in this video.
Bumblebee jasper is currently a commonly offered gemstone in the form of ornaments such as spheres and pyramids, jewelry, but also as tumbled hand stones and massage stones. In this video I like to inform you about what exactly Bumblebee jasper is and what risks it can have for your health if you don't handle it properly.
To me, Bumblebee jasper is a "Scamite" because the name 'jasper' is misleading: there is no jasper or quartz in this stone at all. Moreover, it is not actually a mineral or gemstone but a rock, consisting of several minerals. That does not mean that the material is not real! It is a natural stone.
Summary:
- Bumblebee jasper is NOT jasper, but contains calcite with arsenic-containing realgar and pyrite
- It's a fantasy name for a rock found near a volcano on Java, Indonesia
- The stone is soft, damages easily and dissolves in acid
- The stone contains arsenic that can be harmful to your health
- Do not use it as jewelry on the skin, as a hand stone or massage stone, or for gem elixer
- Providing correct information about risks by sellers is encouraged
- Always wash hands after handling and use proper protection when cutting and polishing
Caveat emptor!
The videos in the Fakes & Frauds series are primarily intended to inform mineral enthusiasts. The best protection against "Scamite" is to be well informed yourself!
So: Caveat emptor; buyer, be on your guard. Who are you buying your minerals from? Are they reliable? Do they know what they are talking about? Are you doing your own research?
However, in addition to "duty to investigate" on the part of the buyer, I believe that the seller also has a "duty to inform". Therefore, I hope that sellers will also start using the videos to properly inform their customers.

Dank je wel voor deze duidelijke uitleg! Ik had net een mooie bumblebee steen uitgezocht, om er een halshanger voor mijzelf van te gaan maken. Nu ik dit weet, blijft hij in de vitrine, Niet op mijn huid!

Dank voor je reactie. Zoals gezegd zijn de risico’s mogelijk beperkt via huid contact maar better safe than sorry!
Brrr Auripigment. Mijn moeder had laatst n stuk gekocht en de verkoper wist geen naam oid. Hij is inmiddels niet meer in haar bezit. En zo probeerde een tijdje terug iemand mij n bumblebee armband te verkopen. Goed dat we altijd eerst alles opzoeken/navragen en googlen! Maarrrr mooi is de bumblebee wel! Dat moet ik toegeven. Jaspis of niet. Ik zou wel een stuk voor in de vitrine willen.

zeker is bumblee en auripigment mooi! Als je weet wat je in huis hebt en weet hoe je het moet hanteren is het ook geen enkel probleem en kan je er prima van genieten in de vitrine!
Hmmm, interessant. Ik kijk nu wel anders naar mijn stukjes orpiment. Ik had altijd aangenomen dat het arseen in verbinding ongevaarlijk zou zijn. Zo zie je maar weer dat je niets moet aannemen. Gelukkig heb ik nooit een aanleiding gehad om aan mijn orpiment te likken :-)

Ja, in verbinding is het gelukkig wel slecht oplosbaar in water, maar omdat het zo poederig is en ook in een zure omgeving wel makkelijker oplost is het geen gezond materiaal om veel te hanteren zonder dat je bewust bent van de risico’s.

dat is niet fraai...maar de bumblebee jaspis wel, daarom wou ik deze steen ook gebruiken in een sieraad. erg blij met je info! ik ga hem maar niet kopen.

Dag Eva, dank voor je reactie. Het is idd een erg kleurrijke mooie steen! Als je het materiaal in een sieraad verwerkt zodat het niet direct op de huid komt dan zou het kunnen wanneer je in ieder geval ook weet wat er in zit! Succes

@@StapelVanStenen er zijn genoeg mooie stenen toch? dan liever geen risico nemen en gewoon een andere kiezen. voor mij is de bumblebee goed voor de vitrine.
Ik heb een trommelsteen bumblebee jaspis in een schaaltje liggen met allemaal andere mineraal stenen. Als ik deze bumblebee jaspis uit deze schaal haal is het dan nodig om al mijn andere mineraal stenen die erbij lagen te reinigen met water? en inclusief mijn houten schaal? moet deze ook gereinigd worden met water?

Dag Quincy, bumblebee jaspis kan poeder los laten, dat kan idd in je schaal terecht gekomen zijn. Om zeker te zijn dat je schaal en stenen geen poeder bevatten kun je ze het beste afspoelen met water. Succes
