Been a knife collector and do custom anodizing work at my house. I love damasteel and Damascus; but absolutely hate companies that seem as if they they have a knife containing Damascus and it’s fake... way to go on going toe to toe with a company. I own about 10 Damascus knives currently but have owned over 50 over the years and roughly 3 years ago I caught my first fake Damascus blade as well... I do exactly what you did when I get a Damascus knife which is compare pictures to my blade! Unless you somehow got the knife in the picture; they’re never the same! Keep up the awesome content and thank you for your service! 🇺🇸

Great information. I really like cutlery lover and was surprised about his first review, but really enjoyed his follow up. - Thank You for the Damascus information, I found it very informative. I did know that each Damascus blade should be different and not identical. I will be the first to admit that I know very little about steels. I think I’m gonna put together a little quick reference guide for myself, just so I know what I’m dealing with. And as always great review of the inexpensive Damascus knife from Amazon, you actually made me want to go buy it lol.

I'm no Smith but I love knife swords etc. I recently found a company that seems to make decent knives some are made out of D2 tool steel, some are made out of railroad spikes which if I remember correctly is 45 carbon steel and some of them have more modern Damascus or pattern water whatever you want to call it made out of 1095 and 15n20. They make simple old-fashioned style folding knives which I have some in D2 tool steel they seem pretty nice and then I recently got in one of their hunting camping tracking etcetera kind of nice that was made out of their Damascus which based on what I just learned in this video is probably production Damascus based on the price but I do actually think it's real Damascus and not a printed on thing because the other thing I also looked at was the photos of similar nice to see if the patterns were the same on the blades when zooming in and they looked very different so now I am more sure about my purchase of an inexpensive Damascus knife. Thank you for giving me more information and reassuring the things that I thought I had heard along the way.

I feel like it is some what real damascus, I mean this may very much be pattern welded steel cut up into smaller billets to the ride thickness, then shaped either on a cnc or on some grinder. If you look at the spine, the pattern kinda matches what is presented on the faces of the knives, and the presence of sandwich steels arent to rare to see (not sure about 2 years back) But if they are going to go through the efforts of laser ingrave two faces of the steel as well as the spine then idk how they are making money. In addition to the inaccuracies that a laser etcher due to the quantity of knives that they put out daily. Who knows, China always use some mysterious steel no one knows about.

This video was very educational, and i was able to figure out that my Damascus blade is real from a fake. If its not too much trouble to ask, can you tell if a Black bone handle of a knife is a real thing like someone burn and shaped it or dye the handle after ti was shaped, or is it just plastic?

core damascus uses 3 types of steel , the core is one type of steel usually a tool steel of some type with 2 slabs of damascus forge welded to each side so when you grind it to produce a edge the tool steel is always the steel the knife edge is using and the slabs on the side are there for beauty only . True damascus steel is a hi carbon steel mixed with low carbon steel and folded many times - with no core metal in the center it is forge welded to.

The only real trademark Damascus on the market would be damasteel and Damacore. Not that there isn't good Damascus on the market. Civivi makes a decent 9Cr based Damascus. I would say to do a little research usually the better companies tell you what's in their Damascus. Im not a fan of it as I would rather have a better single upgraded steel than have something that looks pretty and pay the same price or a premium for it. Ex: civivi elementum 9cr based Damascus $100 but in 14C28N (a better steel) is only $66 (rough values online). but there are those that value the aesthetic over the performance and that is a choice. Try to stay away from Damascus that is not from a good company is all. And on the Sitivien knives I don't personally own any but heard from many reviewers that they are ok and their quality is good for what you pay I will definately be checking some out in the near future though hopefully. Thanks for the great vid Doc and keep making sharp things fun and enjoyable.

The honest truth is you're best off buying a custom made blade from a genuine Smith. But that will cost you a LOT! Reputable established brands all have Damascus blades in their lineups. If it's a brand you've never heard of, or a brand that wants to sell you a Damascus blade for an unbelievably low price, be very wary. If they aren't up front with what specific kinds of steel the Damascus is made of that's another sign to stay away. Amazon is full of fake and poorly made Damascus. If you buy from a site like BladeHQ, Knifecenter, Knifeworks, etc you should be ok.

That’s just being picky because people want to bitch about something for no reason.

  • @DocP91B

Do you know the difference between price and price point? I really don't understand the point of your entire comment. Seriously. It's like you expressed half a thought. So you're saying unless someone spends $500 they can't complain if a company advertises a Damascus blade and lies about it? You're entirely wrong about the existence of "real" Damascus. What you mean is Wootz. That secret recipie has been lost and cant be duplicated. But Damascus steel - as defined as dissimilar types of steel forge welded into a solid bilit - is absolutely still available through the efforts of trained smiths. And for real, people use the term "price point" way too much when they are trying to sound smart. Most of the time they really meant price, but they end up sounding like a pretentious Dbag saying price point for no reason. A 101 level econ class can square that away.
