The whole 'I have an uncle/relative who works at Nintendo' rumor kids used to claim that just about anything was an upcoming game, like random crossovers, was really common for me growing up. One I distinctly remember was a kid swearing up and down that Nintendo released a spin-off to Mario Kart where all the playable characters were their baby versions. I called him on his bluff, but he kept insisting he was telling the truth.

This is such a fun and funny video topic! My personal favorite is when my younger brother tried to convince me a ‘super rare Rainbow Bob-omb’ in Smash Bros. 64 that 1) destroyed everything onscreen when it exploded 2) only appeared once per game cartridge, even if you erased your data 3) you couldn’t pause the game to take a picture of it ETA: Harvest Moon 64 and Harvest Moon A Wonderful Life were also rife with rumors! I spent so much time trying to get the legendary second photo album in 64 and adopt the chihuahua in AWL. Oh! And who could forget some of the incredibly questionable cheats in Roller Coaster Tycoon 1 for PC! Allegedly naming a guest after a notorious criminal would cause them to drop a bomb and flatten your park!

It's strange how many of these playground rumors are actually based in a little bit of fact. I was convinced as a kid that you could get Tom Nook to come out of the shop past closing time in his pajamas and let you come into the shop if you had the golden shovel and hit the back of the shop 3 times. It never worked and I can't remember where I heard that. Fast forward to my early adulthood, and I find out that you can actually do something similar in Dobutsu No Mori e+. Somehow, that gameplay feature made its way to me as a kid but I could never do it because I had the western version of the game.

In the 90s, there were many Mandela effect-like rumors involving NES/SNES/Genesis games supposedly rented from Blockbuster. Message boards would have posts from people who "clearly remember" encountering levels, weapons, etc. in a game they rented at one time, but cannot find evidence of them when they replay the game years later. There would often be replies from people saying they also remember seeing things in a "rented" game, but conveniently, no one ever had an in-hand copy of a cartridge with these supposed rare items.

I remember 2 Super Smash Bros Melee playground rumors growing up: 1. A friend of my younger brother mentioned a method on unlocking Toad in the game that had a requirement to shoot all credit text in the game. At the time I was in middle school and Melee was a 10 year old game at the time, so I didn't believe him. People who posted KZread videos about it mentioned it was a hoax. 2. I remember around 2004 or 2005 that my cousin mentioned a challenger approaching silhouette in the game's instruction booklet that never matched any of the characters in the actual game. I remember my older brother, cousin, and I codenamed the character "Zigzag" since the silhouette resembled a lighting bolt to us at the time. No game sites ever mentioned anything about this character. I remember us doing wierd inputs such as holding "Z" when we ended the result screen hoping the challenge screen would appear. I just looked at a scan of the game's instruction booklet before leaving this comment. The silhouette still looks odd, but it could have been a poorly captured or smeared Luigi silhouette.

It was a bit before my time, but I love all the playground/arcade rumors surrounding the old Mortal Kombat games and how they turned into running jokes, easter eggs and actual lore and characters in later parts. One I remember from when I was a kid was some friends claiming that you could unlock cars and motorcycles in Rayman M/Arena and that Globox used a Fiat 126p... so absurdly stupid. Another school rumor (it was around 2007 or 2008) was that Cartoon Network aired cartoons for adults with swearing, sex and violence at night in England. It's so funny, because we didn't know Adult Swim was a thing back then (we lived in a European country that had TCM at night instead). I knew TCM was a thing, so the adult cartoon thing was a fabrication. I said there was a cartoon called "Poop In The Ass" which was about a Poop with a gun who drank beer and that it was drawn in Paint. And a friend of mine actually said "yeah, I have heard of it" and pretended to know the theme song I made up on the spot. It's hilarious in retrospect. The best thing is that the image I had in my head of that fake cartoon was similar to the art style of 12 oz. Mouse which actually did air on CN at night. I had no idea that existed until years later.

One of my most frustrating childhood gaming moments would have to be Crash Team Racing - notably, unlocking the game's final boss, Oxide. Arguably, the (actual) most difficult character to unlock in the game is N. Trophy, who is unlocked after beating his ghost times in Time Trials. Thing is, after you beat his time on a specific track, you get the ability to race against Oxide's ghost - which tended to be super difficult. Naturally, my assumption was that if I managed to beat all of Oxide's times, I'd unlock him too, just like N. Tropy. After weeks of pure frustration, I managed to beat all of his times on every track. The reward? Nope - not Oxide. You get the 'Scrapbook', which was essentially a short video detailing developer Naughty Dog's development of the Crash series. Kinda cool... but it wasnt Oxide. What frustrated me even more however, was the fact that almost every legit, official gaming magazines back then (Tips and Tricks, Game Informer, EGM, etc) would erroneously claim that Oxide WAS playable if you beat all of his Time Trials - but they often included the disclaimer ("May not work in some versions of the game"). I will never forget this blatant lie. But seeing as how I was a kid, a the fact that the internet wasn't what it is today, meant that I was convinced that I somehow had a 'incomplete' version of the game. I mean, official gaming magazines wouldn't lie, right? I seriously contemplated buying another copy of CTR, but wound up moving on to other games. Many years later, I would eventually discover that, yes, all of those gaming magazines were indeed incorrect. Oxide could not be unlocked no matter what version of CTR you had. Go figure. Needless to say, my excitement to play as this character drove me to purchase the game's (underwhelming) sequel, in which Oxide is essentially 'demoted' to standard racer. Same goes for the CTR remake (a much better game) from a few years ago. I even managed to complete both 100% (yes, even all the Developer Trials).

I remember back then, there was a cheat code I found in a website about final fantasy 9. It said that in Burmercia, there was a fallen statue and by pressing either the x button or a sequence of buttons could unlock Beatrix as a playable character. I stood there like an idiot mashing buttons only to be disappointed by a fake cheat. 😂

Kinda game-related, but call it “Classroom Rumours”. About 20 years ago, there was this classmate of mine who claimed he got one of those portable PS1 screens just by redeeming soda bottle caps (Can’t remember if it was Coke or Pepsi, but maybe it was Pepsi, and it was supposed to be bottle caps from large plastic bottles, not glass ones or anything like that). I didn’t believe him at the time, because I was not aware of any promotion like that going on (there were promotions where you could get a free burger at a fast food place if you collected like 3 bottle caps, but I think something like that happened after the fact, but there were promos similar to that beforehand).

I didn't realize that Toad/Toadette, Petey Piranha/King Boo, and the Special Cup were even part of Double Dash until a few years ago, because I had never played anything higher than 50cc, and evidently, neither did my brothers. However, when I played Mario Kart 7 and saw there was a GameCube course called Dino Dino Jungle in the retro course selection, I was greatly confused. I naturally assumed there was another GameCube Mario Kart game that I didn't know about that that course came from. It never occurred to me that for my entire childhood, I was missing out on a quarter of the game. To this day, I have never been able to play those four characters and that cup, because I haven't returned to the game in years.

Most of my "playground" rumors were just untrue things my older brothers told me about games I didn't know the finer details of. Two in particular I remember- - Samus and Captain Falcon are siblings. I think this just came from the fact that they shared a stage in the original Smash Bros. There was no Metroid or F Zero in our house growing up, so conclusions were just drawn. - And the details that A) Mega Man was a human who was converted into a cyborg and B) It was Dr. Wily, not Dr. Light who was responsible. When I watched them or played Mega Man myself as a kid, we always skipped past the opening cutscenes, so I wasn't aware there was much in-game plot and assumed they just read all that in the manuals that were long lost. Don't know where my brothers got those ideas themselves, possibly playgrounds of their own. That alternate Mega Man lore remains close to my heart. That like Robocop or something, Mega Man was once human, he was turned against his will into a cyborg to be a servant of Dr. Wily, but then he ends up defecting and ruins the evil doctor's foul machinations. It still remains a little disappointing to me to know the actual canon.

takes me back...in mortal kombat 1 a green ninja would appear on screen..many rumors were spread about him and how you get to fight him..heres the way to do it.... To fight Reptile, the player must get a Double Flawless victory in single-player mode on the Pit stage and finish the match off with a Fatality, all without blocking. There must also be a silhouette flying past the moon, which will occur every 50 matches. pretty crazy but some of the rumors were even crazier...then came Ermac

Unlocking missingno in pokemon red/blue definitely made me put a lot of stock into pokemon rumours that were not true. I remember once spending an hour trying every HM on the SS Anne truck trying to get Mew which I was certain was underneath because I saw it on a video which was of a ROM hack, not knowing that at the time of course. I also love the "bowser room" rumour that Oney made up because it's the exact sort of ridiculous thing that those sort of secrets usually are.

Few more I heard were "How to unlock Sonic in Melee" "How to change colors of Drivers in Super Mario Kart" and "How to play as Luigi in Super Mario 64" I also heard that playing around with codes in Animal Crossing in Gamecube would have a few codes that would mute your music, delete your memory card, crash your game, make Brutus appear, spawn the ghost (wisp I think their name is) in the afternoon hours, and give you max bells. Idk how many of that were true, but I did get a ton of hidden items from using codes that were unobtainable through gameplay so all of this "random code entering" was entirely possible. (=

The bits about misinformation in the Nintendo Power Strategy Guides could be a potential copyright trap. Think like paper towns on old maps or dictionary entries for words that don't exist. At the time, there were other unofficial strategy guides from companies like Brady Games, Versus Games, and Prima. It could be that in an effort to prevent people from copying their guides (or to catch companies in potential legal mishaps for a big pay day) Nintendo Power included erroneous information to catch plagiarism.

(Loosely connected to this video's topic) In grade school, one of my classmates who I would sometimes talk to at recess would always take about this game called "Cryptonix" (assuming that's the correct spelling). According to him, the game would make you hallucinate after playing it, and would basically have you tripping balls for an hour. He would swear up and down that it was real, but when I asked him to prove it, he would just make excuses. I forgot about it for a while, but the talk of playground rumors at the beginning of this video reminded me.

Reminds me of the time I checked the GameFAQs cheat code page for Nicktoons: Attack of the Toybots because I was too tired of the game's difficulty to 100% the game legitimately and wanted the bear toy secret character. Someone added fake achievements to the game for unlocking their OCs as characters. No, not the cheats to unlock them, or anything actually ABOUT them, no no, that would make sense. Nope, just... the achievement names. I'm fairly sure they're still on there if you look.
