Um, a DJ set IS a live set. I’m confused by this comment. Do you mean live music (instruments/band)? DJing is supposed to be “live”... there is no general assumption that a DJ’s set is a recorded playback. DJs “breaking the rules” by playing a recording is the exception, not the rule.

In my dj years (1994-2008) I've never seen that happening. Even in 2002 it was often hard to even get a cd player in the booth working to play my own productions which weren't yet out on vinyl. Later on dj's brought one of with their own cdj-100 to play their own tracks between the vinyl releases because the locations/clubs really never had cd players. It wasn't until after 2006 or so the the CDJ 1000's really became the standard and replaced vinyl.

This debate on what a real DJ is has been going on forever. I remember vinyl DJs getting so upset at digital DJs simply because they didn't have to know how to beat match. While I appreciate the techniques involved, the experience that's being created matters most to the audience. So I definitely think there is room for everybody. That being said, artists who have put in the work to develop their skills and techniques should naturally be held in higher regard than those who simply press play or rely on handlers.

For me if you can't play a set live you should leave it to the people who can. Producers produce, djs dj. If you can do both then it's perfect, if not then partner up or focus on the part you can do.

Sadly though musicians have barely ever made any money from music sales. It's always been live performances where they make their living. So if you're a producer then what do you do? You can't go on tour sitting on stage with a laptop. There has to be a performance. Most people associate dance music with DJs. So when producers tour they DJ. Some are legitimately good DJs. For the ones who aren't, they fake it.

The problem is that the crowd mostly recognizes who made the song that they are dancing and going nuts to. So you might put a skilled DJ in the booth, and the crowd won't know who this person is and will wonder why they can't get the big name that made that big tune. It's the music industry. A lot of you have to remember that the promoter of a club or even a festival is thinking about numbers of people. Not keeping it real.

I only accept pre-planned or pre-recorded sets, if it has a purpose. For example I play guitar in a band and the reason our sets are mostly the same is firstly, that we only play our own songs, which limits the possibilties. Another main reason would be, that all four of us need to know what to play, so we don´t mess up. We do actually allways have some parts, that are improvised, but at pre-planned times and it only really works live, because we have been doing it for a while together. Now that I also started to dj, I never plan anything, but try to play my own songs at some point while practicing. I would really like to do something like techno live sets with drum machines and analog synths though, but the gear is too expensive for me at the moment.

A lot of the problem is the crowd. If you look at a 10,000 person festival, I guarantee you most of them really could care less if the DJ is playing real or not. They are waiting to hear their favorite song, they are ecstatic at the big name. They've heard and see this person as if they just saw Paris Hilton walk into a nightclub. We all want to believe that everybody at these festivals is deep into the music and the culture and wants everything to be kept real, but a lot of people more or less show up for the experience of the festival as opposed to the music and the DJ. A lot of them would rather have a fake set and the great visuals and the big experience as opposed to toning it all down. So the DJ plays live and beat matches manually. I just had to realize long ago that the only people that really care about this stuff are DJs and the handful of people that are deep into the culture. This is why I tell all of them to stick to smaller venues and local events.

I wouldn't necessarely compare a DJ to a band. A DJ's job is to read a crowd and adapt to the vibe, energy, country whatever. So in a Solo Show I don't mind a pre-planned set, but in a club or at a festival a DJ shouldn't plan out his tracklist. Adapting to a crowd is the difference between a DJ and a performer in my opinion.

I started DJING back in 1988 when you had to know how to beat match. Worked at the biggest clubs and Dance parties Australia had. Now with the equipment these days you can hit the sync button almost anyone can DJ lol

  • @AlexMoschopoulos

    @AlexMoschopoulos

    8 ай бұрын

Yes, and I honestly think the sync has broadened what the DJ can do, especially when you are diving into things like stems. The hard reality though is that the DJs being talked about aren't even using it. They are just creating a mix in a studio, and then playing a disc while pretending to DJ at a festival. I know how to manually beat match, but I still use the technology. Why would I not use it? I've come to realize the crowd honestly doesn't care if you can manually beat match. They care if you play a solid set and if you play tunes they can get into. I will also say that a sync button won't play the music at the right timing, create a good set, or do good blending with EQs and other things. Still, all of this debate is pointless because these bigger names are not even bothering with any of it. For all we know, they could have hired a DJ to make the set that they are playing at festivals.

TL;DR, Nothing wrong with pre-recorded but it's not flexible to the crowd at all. The whole idea is to keep the party going right? So long as that's happening there's nothing wrong with a pre-recorded set. The issue is when reading the crowd and what you have lined up in your pre-recorded set won't keep the energy up: that's when one needs to know the skills.

I also DJ a lot of kids party’s, so I sometimes record an hour set at home, so then I can throw the mix on, and MC/ dance with the kids and not have to worry about running behind the booth and changing songs every 2-3min. I’ve never had a set list, it’s always open format, off the top of my head.. I guess it depends on the type of gig.

As mentioned, when you're talking about show wide choreography, makes sense because so many things need to be on point (ie it's about the fireworks and lights and not just the performance of the guy mixing music). That said when it comes to someone that is expected to perform AT the show it's absolutely not ok. I started when it was vinyl only. The time an effort it took to gain enough skill to put on a show meant something, it was part of the magic for lack of a better word. In such a case the second you take that away to simply play a track, you've instantly turned yourself into an mp3 player which anyone with a browser can do. I don't know anyone that would knowingly travel to a venue and pay money to have someone push play, they came for a performance. As to banning people, I think that is a question for the individual venues and events. Ultimately it's their location and reputation on the line and thus a matter of their own integrity. I've come across events and venues that would have no problem with someone pre-recording something so long as they weren't caught and essentially the money kept flowing. As distasteful as I find it, those places are incredibly rare (or were often duped the same as the crowd).

It’s all about turning the crowd up. You can also play a pre made mix and literally do cool effects.

I used my name as a radio DJ to transition into a mobile DJ career, but I never actually got any training in how to mix music. So I was basically just faking it for 10. You said some interesting facts, i belive thats CDjs and Controllers destroyed Djing and music as a whole because 1st, vinyl was limited back in the early 90s and so was Techinic 1210s due to fact £700 for a pair was a lot of money and only well off people could afford them aswelll as buying records. 2nd back in the 90s you saved your hard earnt cash and went to a rave to listen to your favorite DJ who... in effect was able too play the limited records at the time in a way = set that you really liked. it was these DJ Sets that made DJs popular and even famous 3, DJs had to compete with eachother with skills to best eachothers Sets, while others moved too other music styles. Carlcox became famous because in 94 he was the only DJ who play 3 decks live. i know because i was there at the Carlcox concept rave... :) 4 but the biggest issue in muisc to day is the tracks are short and designed for looping, cutting, fx ect ect, vinyl records are around 6 - 8 mins long, some can be longer, but your typical tracks today are on average 3:30 mins - 4:30mins long? muisc today is visual and not by ear, Djs today mix like 4 tracks in 2 min with unwated loops, double drops, fx etc etc.... Ejs today dont play music..... they play an edited version of what they think is music.. But as you said back in the day it was harder to play vinyl but its that interaction and the feeling that makes you a real Dj... Music comes from the heart and what you hear, music isnt what you seen on a screen or what you pre-set before... I think many Ejs need to take a few steps back and learn about muisc because we the listeners dont care about how well you operate your £1000 Dj controller etc. we just want to hear music as it was writen and your skills to make it happen in your way :)

Actually I'm doing my first gigs on campings, I'm playing with a DDJ-1000 and I use a lot my sync button, (I always prepare tracks and adjust the beat grid before). I also have Vynil turntables wich I use for my own pleasure (at home with friends) and sometimes into illegal FreeParty's in France. So using sync when you play disco, funk, variety, and commercial EDM for work isn't a shame if your crowd want to hear that, and it let you really more time to watch and to choose your next track.

Those superstar EDM djs playing pre-recorded sets are shit (sorry to the offended kids). The sets are the same, they unnecessarily speak in the mic and there is no real mixing, just a dry cut after every 30s drop (vibe killer). That is why techno and psytrance djs and parties are better. They are always mixing live. They keep the groove going from beginning to end.

I edit and mix before loading tracks in the set list, and do all the transitions and additions live- that way I can divert some of my attention to also using the DMX console. It would be pretty tough to fully integrate edits on the fly while synchronizing lights simultaneously. Humans have their limits in terms of multi-tasking. Pre-recording the entire set with transitions and elements is super sketchy to me, ethically speaking. I don’t think that is okay.

  • @kke

Maybe they could make videos of the pre-recording process and play that on the screen with the light shows and effects, and just be present on the stage, maybe hyping on the mic or playing the tambourine or whatever, or actually produce a full show with dancers, MCs, robots and holograms instead of faking it behind the decks, which I think hurts the whole industry. The completely fake DJs, like everyone on the DJanes channel, should be exposed (well, they're already almost fully exposed behind the decks, if you catch my drift) and absolutely not booked to any live event ever as DJs. The DJs who do it live, could maybe start underlining it more, like calling their shows "DJ Super-Bob's Live Set" or similar and make it so that it's obvious to the audience it's happening right there live, show the skills and clearly separate themselves from any of the hired models acting like they're playing. Hopefully audiences start craving for more of that instead of the fakes in the future.

I can see reasons for it, but in my opinion, it should only be used when absolutely necessary. As some below have said, bathroom or smoke breaks when you can't stop the music are a good reason, but they are short. I can see it for a huge festival also because of the scheduling and lighting. Now if someone thinks they can just record 4 or 5, 60 to 90 minute sets and hit the bar scene... no. no. NO. I am killing myself trying to get ready for my first gig and ya know what? Overall, I am going to suck at DJing, but I will not be using any premixed sets. I will instead be learning more. For my first gig, I can keep it uber simple. After many years in a band, I know how to keep people dancing and in the end it does not require fancy mixing or 30, 2 minute clips of songs smashed together. It comes down to good song choices, proper volume levels, communication with the audience and most importantly, having a good time yourself. If you are not having fun, your audience will not have fun.

You can tell quite easily if a DJ fakes his/her performance on youtube, and being just so dissapointed in DJs when i realized the whole goddamn set is on 2 (or even worse, 1 ) usb drives, i always try to spot 'fakeness' if i encounter an upcoming DJ that has an interesting set. In my opinion the vinyl seperates the Men/Women from the boys/girls. Ask a DJ, any DJ to do a set on vinyl, and it will tell right away if the DJ is truly so amazing as he or she appears to be. But the lightshow/fireworks story that it has to sync with the music makes sense.. you as a DJ don't want to be the fuckup 'who does it all realtime' and transforms the whole show into a clusterfuck because the needle jumped.

1st sentence is amazing. About pre-recorded set its also a little bit tricky because if you do them or anyone make them in studio or at home, there is no pressure from "crowd" or basicly from anyone so i think its way easier and ofc you can fix or record it again if need so. What I see as true dj skill is to react on crowd and on possible mistakes, gltiches and so on instantly. Prerecorded set seems to have non of this problems.

I agree and this is the reason why if you are working a normal club or a smaller event, you can't just walk in with a pre-recorded set. You need to be nimble and versatile so you can change things up if you can see the crowd isn't feeling it. The problem is that at a festival, the crowd has to take whatever is being given. So if the big DJ comes on and plays a techno set that nobody is feeling, and everybody leaves the stage to go somewhere else in the festival, they just have to suck it up until he's finished. Unless of course this DJ has it in him to blend out of the pre-recorded set and start live DJing to win the crowd back.

With pre recorded set it depends on what the situation like say if a DJ has a gig in like a few days and has just done producing music and only had an email from the events people saying they would like the DJ to play at their venue in a few days. for the DJ they would be under the pressure and havent had time to organise a set so gavibg a pre recorded set would be hand and plus as long the crowd likes it thats the main thing but with fake djs thats different entirely as the fake djs aret really bothered about wjat they play and just dont ever leanr should be banned.

It’s like going to a “live” band playing their records and pretend to play their instruments. No problem for DJ’s? I think it is worse. At least with a band you would know, but a DJ fakes it like it’s real. Maybe the problem is going to a DJ as main attraction. I used to go to a club for the choice of music by a specific DJ and his creation of atmosphere. With a bigger venue and hype everything seems fake. The collective need for togetherness and agreement on how “great” this particular DJ is, trumps the actual quality, creativity and real performance. Yak

No way are pre-recorded sets ok, it should result in name and shaming of these so called dj’s that do it. It’s effectively stealing a living and cheating everyone who is there. I’m from a different genre to a lot of your fans i believe (drum n bass) and that genre is fairly elitist; if anyone is stealing a living they would be outcasted and would (rightly) not receive bookings etc. Im shocked at a lot of people (some of whom want to be djs themselves) on this comment thread saying that pre-recording a set is ok - would you rather not be up there yourself, actually mixing, actually selecting on the fly? There’s a skill that goes along with this that is disregarded and not respected by anyone who ‘plays’ a pre-recorded set.

I feel like it's stupid and it takes away from the actual art of djing. If you cant go up there and organically beat match and mix and put on a real show and actually truly appreciate the art of being a dj than you shouldn't be allowed to step on a stage. They are giving djing a bad persona by making pre recorded sets and acting like they are djing. That's why a lot of people think that all djing is is pressing play and turning knobs. But that's what all of these "djs" are causing people to think.

While I would love to see an end to the faking, I know it's not feasible anymore. The hard reality is for the 10,000 people that showed up to a festival, only s fraction of them actually care if the DJ is real or fake. The rest are just there to party or hear their favorite tunes or see the big names like celebrities. Everyone has to remember that promoters are not thinking about keeping it real. They are thinking about how many people can they bring and how much money can be made. Especially with these festivals where you have sponsors and investors to please. The other problem is that even if you required everyone that could actually play and they tone down the light and visual shows so they are not in sync, the crowds then are not going to be as happy. The keeping it real people can lament how the crowd isn't there for the music and doesn't respect the art of DJing, but again, they are the people that spent the money to come in and that's what the promoter is going to care about. For as many times as I've seen DJs, including myself, complain about promoters and the scene, the only way you're going to truly understand the other side is when you go and promote events and realize how many values you have to toss out in order to be successful. Like it or not, this is the music industry. My only advice for the people who hate it would be to stick to smaller local events and support local DJs.
