Failing against Russia: Can Ukraine survive the war? | To the point

Ukraine’s highly anticipated counteroffensive has so far failed to show significant victories. With dire consequences for its troops. A shortage of ammunition and less support from the West have brought the war against Russia to a standstill. Many Ukrainians are dreading the approaching winter because of renewed Russian attacks on critical infrastructure - and they’re also worried about being abandoned by the West altogether. Will the winter bring a war of exhaustion that will further jeopardize Ukrainian integrity and independence?
On To the Point we ask: Failing against Russia: Can Ukraine survive the war?

its amazing how DW's tone has changed on this conflict over time...feels like someone's had a real wake up call to whats really happening on the ground and its really starting to show in the type and tone of stories they're releasing this last few weeks and months..

The fact is neither side can win with the evolution of drones, precision guided munitions, and WW1 style trench networks and minefields. Russia is gaining nothing economically, has depleted 50% of effective military equipment, and it's people watch Telegram and see thousands of Russian IFVs and tanks go up in flames.

The tone has changed as the war has changed, Russia was really struggling to have any impact for a long time, poor battlefield tactics repeated again and again, a lack of equipment, poor motivation from conscripted men etc.. However in time Russia has managed to fix some of these issues. Realistically a country with the resources and the political structure of Russia should have been able to take Ukraine quickly, and that has not happened. Causing immense reputational damage, damage that even if Russia manage to carve out some kind of victory will not go away quickly.

They are changing the narrative because they will stop supporting Ukraine. Russia has already won the war when they initiated a mobilization. Ukraine had no capacity to clear out the Russian held positions. They are now ‘mobilizing the army’ but so far everything we’ve seen is people getting snatched off the streets by vans in the night.

And another point about sanctions and that not all companies have left Russia, the 2nd biggest number of international companies that have stayed and are still operating in Russia are *American*. Only 18% of all American companies in Russia have left. So its abit strange to state that friends of Russia in EU, such as Hungary and Austria, are not making sure that sanctions are followed. Most of western countries are not following sanctions against Russia. But by the looks of it sanctions have benefited Russia much more than those who implemented them. The funniest thing that Russian gas pipe going through Ukraine is still pumping gas to Europe. And Ukraine still gets paid for transition.

You can compare steel production, for example. Russia's steel production exceeds steel production in the United States, and so on. That is, they can produce material tanks from steel, and California can produce, for example, games about material tanks or services that will post videos of material tanks fighting, but not the tanks themselves. At the same time, the GDP in California will be higher, but tanks will not be built - there are no production chains The USA is a post-industrial country, 80 percent of GDP is services, like insurance, and so on.

The discussion is like "The Taliban could win against the US". Now, we know that the Taliban won against the US. It's pretty obvious that unless the US entered this war directly, Ukraine does not have any chance. The outcome of a war is decided not so much about the overwhelming military power but the will of one side to fight for as long as it takes to win. The Soviet pulled out of Afghanistan because it cost them too much and there was no strategic value for them to stay. The Taliban won against the US because they were willing to fight for as long as it took. Russia considered winning the war in Ukraine as its existential battle against the West and the US. Russia is prepared to fight for as long as it takes while the US and the West have no real existential interests in Ukraine. The US and the West won't be willing to lose 100000 men fighting to Ukraine and also risk a nuclear showdown. So, it's on the wall who will win. US and Western calculus fails so badly. Russian economy continue to grow. Russia is becoming more independent of the US and Western economy every month going by. The West is more desperate about losing the supply of raw materials and energy from Russia. The Global South looks compeletely neutral and even keener to trade with Russia. China and India are trading with Russia more than ever and the West and the US are too afraid to say anything. Why aren't the West and the US sanctioning India and China? Reality will set in. New governments will take over the West and the US. And soon they will pretend nothing ever happened as Ukraine is wiped off the map.

In 1994, the Budapest Agreement was signed, according to which Ukraine, at the suggestion of the West, renouned nuclear weapons and heavy bombers. And the West, represented by the United States and Great Britain, acted as the guarantor of its territorial integrity, promised support in the event of an attack on Ukraine. Refusal of nuclear weapons effectively left Ukraine vulnerable against Russian aggression. In 2014, Russia annexed the Ukrainian Crimea and part of Donbass, and in 2022 it is attacking Ukraine, bombing its cities and villages, killing Ukrainians. And now the West does not want to give Ukraine enough necessary weapons, although basically these weapons are not new, they are being replaced with more modern ones.

Let's be real: Recently, retired General David Petraeus, the former architect of the Iraq war said that before American troops would go on a counteroffensive if American troops were in the place of the Ukrainian troops against Russia, that first B1 Bombers would carpet bomb the trenches and minefields. G9 Bulldozers would finish the job. Warthog ground-support fighters with 50 caliber cannons would make hamburger out of retreating Russian forces and take out troop carriers and tanks and artillery guns. Apache attack helicopters would take out hidden artillery batteries and cover advancing forces, F-16s would be crisscrossing the Russian lines dropping bombs on tanks and firing at fleeing soldiers and keeping Russian jets at bay. The Ukraine does not have bombers, G9 bulldozers, Warthog ground-support fighters, Apache attack helicopters or F16s covering the troops and having air superiority. Does anyone see what I am saying here? Ukraine has gone into a counteroffensive with one hand tied behind its back against the 2nd Superpower on the planet. Asking ourselves questions like "how is it possible that the Ukrainians have made such little progress?" is absurd. We have to give them the weapons they need to win the war. Period.

Thank you DW for your coverage of important global issues, not least the war in Ukraine. I'm getting fed up of hearing people criticise the Ukrainian counter offensive, saying it has failed ! The Ukrainians have been nothing short of heroic in this conflict, down to the last man, woman and child ! They have shown incredible resilience, pride, intelligence and extraordinary ingenuity in adapting to this brutal attack on their country. What about the resounding successes of their attacks on Crimea, and other infrastructure targets ? Dare I say the attack on a railway tunnel 3000 miles away in China ?......If the "West" hadn't dithered so extensively, and given Kiev what they wanted, when they asked for it,a year or more ago, namely AIR COVER,then perhaps the envisioned "breakthrough" might be more evident to the harsh critics !? Air support could have severely hampered the Russian effort to build EXTENSIVE defences, whilst the Ukrainians waited for our limp promises to materialise.....In short, don't criticise the Ukrainians, take a look in the mirror, and ask yourself, "have we done enough ?" The answer will be a resounding NO !! If the amount of suffering that the Ukrainians have endured, all the killed and horribly maimed and traumatised families, hasn't affected us enough,we should all hang our heads in shame !? (And that is not to belittle the suffering of others around the world caught up in conflict). Слава свобода і мир ✌

I am sure the elite in Ukraine are also richer with USD stacked away in basements and Swiss accounts while Russian oligarchs are profiteering from contracts too even if they are a lot more restricted internationally.
