I also regret wearing them. Me and my sister both had about the same vision when we were young. I thought I was doing the right thing by wearing them. She didn't. She is still doing fine. My vision is a lot worse than her and on top of that my undereye circles are way worst than hers. I need a full coverage concealer and she doesn't...

Take your glasses off and your vision will be blurry but just wait a while and you will get your old vision back. Your brain basically uses your blurry vision and makes the image clearer. I just got new glasses for astigmatism. When i take off my glasses, my vision is worse, but really, that is how my vision always was, my brain just enhances the image. Keep your glasses off for a while and your brain will kick in again

Don't change prescription glasses so often, because in my experience that worsen the vision!!! I was at one point that, when I didn't find my glasses, I was panic to not finding it. When I start using my very first glasses my sight got better! All the time when you go with the optometrist they give you more prescription that you need, and that makey your vision worse every time! That's from my experience, now I can see a lot better!

I was an optician for over 35 years and as such I remember fitting a young girl or boy with their first pair of glasses to correct their myopia. Their first glasses were usually very weak. About a year later I would see them again and their eyesight had deteriorated more and they needed an increase in their glasses. With each increase they of course were wearing their glasses more and more often until they were never without their glasses anymore. I never, ever saw anyone needing their prescription reduced. Considering that you have been an ophthalmologist for twenty years and have never needed glasses until this year is amazing. All the reading and studying your eyes were doing should have had you wearing glasses long ago as a nearsighted doctor. So you have been extremely lucky to have had very good vision, and still do, for so long. I'm sure the prescription you now have is very weak and mostly just to relax your eyes doing close work. But lets' see what happens to your eyesight when you next examine your eyes. I'm betting that since getting your glasses you are wearing your glasses a little more often each month. aren't you? I'm also betting that you're going to be needing an increase in your glasses. At some point you're going to get tired of putting on and taking off your glasses and you're going get progressives so you can keep your glasses on all the time. You may or may not need a prescription in the upper segment. By the way, your patient's are going to trust you more if your wearing glasses yourself. I should also add that you look good in glasses. Have you ever wore non-prescription glasses just for fashion?

  • @otiebrown9999
    @otiebrown99992 жыл бұрын

Hi Dr. Rupa, I must dispute you on solid scientific grounds. As a superior ophthalmologist, medicine is your total life. But in engineering science, you are just wrong. If you place a -3 Diopter lens, on the normal eye, it becomes -2 diopters more myopic in nine months. Our "nearsightedness ", is always self induced, as a scientist. ( Technically it is a control system. ) That means, that prevention is possible, if the mature person, will wear a +2 diopter for all close work, when he is a 20/50, on his Snellen. Then slowly, he will get his Snellen back to 20/20. The minus lens makes your refractive state, even more negative, always. Tragically. Even you use Atropine to prevent accommodation, on your children.

Myopia is usually caused by having a too long eyeball or too steeply curved cornea. Glasses can't affect those directly, they can only affect the muscles that control the lens of the eye.

My daughter is 10, and she is high myopia with astigmatism. When she went to the eye doctor last year at age nine her prescription was a -8.00 in her left eye and -6.75 in her right eye. Her left eye jumped 2.25 diopters in one year and her left eye jumped 1.50 diopters, I think. She's been in glasses since she was five, and her second optometrist put her in contacts at age six to try and slow down her progression. The last eye doctor put in her notes that she had +1 elevation, with apical vessel branching in her left optic nerve. He told me she would lose the peripheral vision in her left eye. He told me why, but I don't remember. He also said if I don't remember why not to worry about it. NY question is should she be seen by a pediatric ophthalmologist or is it fine for her to just keep seeing an optometrist? Thank you so much for taking the time to read this.

A month before the end of 6th grade, I could barely see the chalkboard. I got my first glasses in the summer before 7th grade. I was afraid to be seen in them. I used them only sometimes in school. Then I wanted the strongest glasses possible so I wouldn't have a choice about whether to wear them. Then I saw a copy of "seeing without glasses" by Roberto Kaplan, at my local public library when I was 22. I read it. I barely did the eye exercises because I was afraid I was only allowed to see using my prescription glasses. Then I got an eye doctor to give me glasses 80% as strong as I was "supposed to need". Then I went for a year using glasses almost none of the time. Then I bought a trial lens kit and discovered that in bright sunlight I could see with less lens power than my previous prescription. I bought glasses with that prescription, online. That worked for awhile but now my eyesight seems to be getting worse. My last doctor-given prescription was -5.25 left eye, -4.75 right eye. I am 39 now. With trial lenses just now, I can sort of see with -3.75 in both eyes and I can see well with -4.5 in each eye. Should I try improving my eyesight again or should i just acquiesce to buying and using glasses with -4.50 in each eye? Yeah I suppose you are legally not allowed to tell me what to do but I won't tell the eye care industry police if you tell me what to do anyway.

I don't know the english name for the eye condition I have (in Hungarian it is called "double vision" or "hidden strabismus"). It means that my brain struggles to properly allign the two images seen by my eyes (sort of like when you take off your glasses during a 3D movie). It is a genetic problem, half my mom's family has it, and we all need regularly (1-3 years) renewed glasses because the angle of correction needed changes (not for better or worse, not even in one direction). I wonder if it is something that would change regularly with or without glasses, or wearing glasses contributes to this change. You talk about near and farsightedness in this video, but there are loads more eye problems that can be helped with glasses, how are they affected?

I have a cousin who has refuses to wear her corrective lenses whether it be glasses or contact lenses. She has needed them since 2016, but she has not worn them since she first got them because according to her, she does not like to put things over her eyes. That is an attitude you can't have if you have poor vision. It is something you can't take lightly because your eyes and your head are going to be in a lot of pain. The side effects are not worth it, and that attitude has to change when she is going to start driving. For people who have poor vision and do not like to wear their corrective lenses and refuse to wear them, suck it up. You can't just choose not to wear them when you need them. You'll make your eyes work harder, it will lead to negative side effects, and if your vision prescription changes over time, that is just going to make the side effects worse. Don't be a fool and just wear your glasses or your contact lenses whether you like it or not.

It is crazy how what western medicine teaches eye doctors are the exact opposite of what people experience first hand. I have read story after story of how specifically children should not wear glasses and those who are prescribed them that don't wear them later are shown to no longer have a prescription needed where children who did wear their prescription glasses had to keep them for life. I have experienced my vision become dependent and even used tests to confirm. I stopped wearing my glasses and years later my vision has mostly improved yet an eye doctor would tell me to wear them which would put me back again. Do you think people who look at the same signs from the same distance before and after glasses are just lying that they used to be able to see it better before they got glasses ? No. That is silly. Also, children who are indoors most of the time need glasses in time. Let your children get sunlight. Their eyes need it. Sungazing is corrective. Western medicine is corrupt and bought out by Rothschilds.

Do not let your kids stare at the sun...come on guys that's just so dumb I can't even imagine why people are liking this comment. Dr. Rupa explained how the changes to the shape of the eye and/or muscles causes the vison distortion that glasses correct. This is a summary of scientific findings that you never address. Your experiences with not using glasses and that improving your vision is most likely due to the phenomenon of 'accommodation'. This does not mean your vision actually improved. It may seem like it did because your brain and eyes are straining to see more clearly. This is not good for you and does not actually lead to lasting changes in vision. It's how the brain is accommodating with the stress of trying to see clearly. Natural vision does not improve your vision and studies show this. I think rational people should not look at the "story after story" that you vaguely reference and rather look at the decades of research. Farsightedness (Hyperopia) can be outgrown but nearsightedness (myopia) cannot. Kids need glasses to help them possibly outgrow or deal with the changes in vision. If not, this can cause permeant problems. There are many variables in play and usually stories do not give the full picture. So, you can have a story where one kid outgrows their glasses but one doesn't, but you'd be comparing apples and oranges due to one kid having different genetic or physical differences. This is why we should rely more on science than an assortment of stories, because scientific tools of statistics and causality analysis can actually find what the reasons behind some change are. I write this for the kids. If you're a grown adult and want to experiment on yourself and believe this stuff, then have at it. The kids usually don't have a say in the matters of their parents. When they're young enough they believe their guardians know what's best for them and have their best interest at heart. Even when they're teenagers and can think mostly for themselves they still don't have the legal independence to make decisions for themselves, such as making doctors appointments or getting glasses. Don't experiment on your kids over what you read on the internet. Work with PROFESSIONALS that have DECADES of clinical experience and have seen THOUSANDS of patients. No clinician is perfect but its hell of a lot better than staring at the sun. Your message is dangerous because you're directly talking to parents ("Let your children get sunlight. Their eyes need it. Sungazing is corrective"). Some will absolutely be gullible enough to fall for this stuff. Hope I can a decent enough counternarrative for them to atleast look at the scientific principles and studies behind eye research.

They just came out with the first randomized study on them and it showed no effect. But the study was small and only looked at 2 hours of computer use and most of us are on devices for way longer. If you like them, wear them, but i never tell patients that they have to rush out and go buy them.

I think the myth stems from parents having kids get stronger prescription strengths over time; they assume that the glasses make their eyes dependent and worse. But really, children's eye shape naturally grow over time, thus requiring stronger prescription. This is a good example that correlation is not causation. This is what I've heard, is it true? Please correct me if I'm wrong! Edit: please keep posting these myth-busting videos; I love em' !

But why can't it be true? Correlation doesn't IMPLY causation, sure, but it can. No one can be sure without additional information that the glasses are not at least part of the problem. The phrase "correlation is not causation" works both ways. Why is it that one way is the correct one, but not the other way around?

I found the contacts online for much cheaper yet his manager said I couldn't order these online. I am a -8.00 in glasses with very high astigmatism. The hard contacts are cheaper option for me then soft contacts.

"Your brain is just getting used to..." using glasses is similar to any bracing or assistance device on any other part of the body. The longer you use them the more dependent your brain-body will be on them. This is why in physical therapy there is "least restrictive/assistive" device decisions to improve function. So I would argue that yes, if you wear a lens consistently for longer periods of time you will eventually become dependent on them because of normal brain-body adaptations. If wearing a minus lens the normal adaptation will be toward loss of distant vision.

Myopia, or nearsightedness is the condition when a person cannot see distant objects clearly without glasses. Nearsightedness is caused by focusing on close-up objects such as a book or a computer for long periods of time. The result is that the eyes get stuck in the close-up focus position and can no longer focus on distant objects. If we look inside the eye, we can see how this problem occurs. After focusing on close-up objects for extended periods, the focusing muscles in the eyes (which are called the "ciliary muscles") lock up. This results in the eyes becoming more and more elongated. Nearsightedness occurs when the eyes become overly elongated. When that happens, there is no turning back. The eye cannot go back to its previous shape. The ability to see distant objects clearly without glasses is lost forever. What can be done to prevent nearsightedness in a child? The key is to catch the problem as soon as the child experiences the very first sign of any difficulty seeing distant objects clearly such as the TV or the writing on the board at school. Ask the child from time to time if he or she can see distant objects clearly. For example, ask the child to read a distant road sign or a newspaper held up at a distance. If the child is having any difficulty at all seeing such objects clearly, that is the time to act. Don’t delay - otherwise there will be an irreversible overelongation of the eye. Usually, eye doctors will prescribe distance glasses for correcting blurred distance vision. The wearing of distance glasses aids the vision of myopes by bringing everything closer so that distant objects are within the range of focus. Unfortunately, distance glasses actually make nearsightedness worse and irreversible. This is because they force the focusing muscles to stay locked up. This in turn forces the eyes to further elongate, resulting in the need for stronger distance glasses as time goes by. The child is thus doomed to a lifetime of total reliance on distance glasses to see distant objects clearly and progressively worsening nearsightedness. Distance glasses are a false friend. There is an alternative - reading glasses. If a child starts wearing reading glasses for prolonged periods of reading and other close work at the first sign of any difficulty with distance vision, the focusing muscles will relax and cannot lock up. Reading glasses relax the eyes. There should be no further elongation of the eye. Distant objects can be seen without the need for any glasses. It is important to note that the child will not be reliant on reading glasses. They are simply a protective tool that should be used during long periods of close work. If strong enough reading glasses are used, nearsightedness should be prevented. It is important that the reading glasses be strong enough to completely eliminate all focusing effort (accommodation) when reading. Whenever close work is done without the protection of reading glasses, it is important to: 1. Hold the work as far away as possible. 2. Use as much light as possible in order to reduce the size of the pupil and, consequently, the accommodation. 3. Look into the distance frequently to relax the accommodation. What strength reading glasses should be prescribed? The rule of thumb is to prescribe plus lenses that are about 3 diopters more positive than the distance prescription, in other words a +3 "add." If the child is just moving into myopia, he or she might need a +3 lens. If the child is already a -1, he or she might need a +2 lens. This brings the limit of clear vision in to a typical reading distance of 33 cm or about 13 inches. Astigmatism is normally not corrected. It is essential to tell the child that when using the reading glasses, he or she should keep the object far enough away so that it appears very slightly blurred, but still legible. As the eye tries to clear this slightly blurred image, the maximum relaxing force is applied to the ciliary muscle. Can a child just use reading glasses bought at a drug store? No. A professional should be seen to obtain individualized advice. Drug store reading glasses are intended for adult-size heads. The distance between the lens centers conforms to the usual distance between the pupils of the adult head. If such glasses are used by young children, who have a smaller interpupillary distance, the "prismatic effect" of the lenses causes increased convergence. This can cause problems such as double vision and should be avoided. The distance between the child's pupils should be measured when the eyes are converging on a book. The centers of the eyeglass lenses should not be any farther apart than that distance. .

They trigger more accommodation(focusing effort) , and the eye changes its refractive state to its average of accommodation. You as a Doc on youtube can't say anything because you are controlled by the imdustry and you get good money out of it , but you do put your kids on atropine so they don't become myopic so you know all this stuff already. Plus lenses for near act just like atropine, and would work even better. Don't lie to the general public. Doctors are trained to see the body mechanically, like plumbing. In reality the body is a complex of systems. Eyesight is a visual system that includes not just the eye structures but also optic nerves and brain receptors. Whereas glasses may not affect the eyes per se, the brain adapts to glasses, so it is possible visual acuity could be worse without them after a period of adaptation.
