Faces - United Nations Free & Equal

"Lesbian", "gay", "bisexual", "transgender", "intersex", "queer": can you see past the labels?
This video from the United Nations Free & Equal campaign celebrates the contributions that millions of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people make to families and local communities around the world. The cast features "real people" (not actors), filmed in their workplaces and homes -- among them, a firefighter, a police officer, a teacher, an electrician, a doctor and a volunteer, as well as prominent straight ally and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

    LGBT Rights are Human rights. I think each person should live in peace and harmony. I wish to live in a society where exclusion of others by their skin colour, body type, religious believe, gender expression or sexual orientation has replaced by inclusion and acceptence of each person as human beign. Even Jesus gave the hand to the poor, to the burglars and others who are members of the excluded population of Jerusalem by roman empire.

    SuperLabradudel This video is about people who have been oppressed by society and the UN is encouraging them not to feel ashamed of who they are. It makes no sense to tell a heterosexual: "you don't need to hide anymore, you can be yourself!" because no society on Earth imposes shame on people for them being heterosexual. Don't you get that?

    This is really hard to spread believe it or not, I live in the central of war right now, in Iraq where religion dominates everything. It is hard for everyone, trained or not, to be able to spread a message like this, to make someone want to stand up against their or beliefs which they so hardly incorporate in their everyday lives. This is why, being something the public dislikes, is one of the most challenging things. It is not fair that in a world like this, we must spend money on creating ads like this, ads that should not been necessary, ads that should have existed in our hearts. God is not perfect. Don't get me wrong, god is very real and perfect and beautiful, but the biblical nor the Islamic god (Which is the same god) is.

    As above. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intersex People with this condition were formerly referred to as hermaphrodite, which is a biological term. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hermaphrodite These days, it comes with a set of connotations (like most things these days) so it seems a new term was created. It's a fairly rare condition. I worked with one person with it and was made a girl and had children. Now in her late 50's she wants to be a guy and is going through the transition....which is causing some confusion among her grand kids. (per her discussion with me) This was nearly 10 years ago. back in the 60's there wasn't very good methodology to determine the dominate gender. that is no longer the case.

    ***** I think, people can live without having sex. But they can't live without speaking about sex. Here's the problem. Science, art, philosophy... world is full of wonders and secrets, but 80% out of all discussions are about sex and love. I'm not telling these are bad themes to talk about, but... they are definitely overrated.

    I don't understand. What is the meaning of "be proud"? What's the point to be proud of being LGBT, straight, american, billioner, genius, whatever? I could be proud of amazing people, their achievments, actions that are worth to be proud of. But this is leftist bullshit. Be proud because you are. But who wants to be proud of you? This is irrational motivation leading to a fixation. Do what you want, fight for your rights, earn respect, but don't moan "of being proud". It's a common rule for everyone.

  • @Andrew_Warden

    @Andrew_Warden

    9 жыл бұрын

    Of course it's a common rule for everyone. This is a group of people who have historically been told to feel shame for who they are. It still happens, even if things have gotten better. Pride is just the antithesis to that shame.

  • @afonsords

    @afonsords

    9 жыл бұрын

    DaniOK88 You don't get it then let me break it down for you. The opposite of proud is ashamed - which is exactly the only feeling societies implanted on LGBT people's minds for centuries and centuries. Seeing as nowadays lots of countries are moving forward and embracing values such as equality and liberty these minorities that were brutally oppressed for so long can now stop feeling ashamed. If you have any knowledge of anthropology, psychology or history you'll know this is how human societies react to rapid change in social values.

  • @DaniOK88

    afonsords I get your point, but I still don't see strikt connection between "proud" and "shame": if any kind of mine was opressed then, why should I proud of mine own now. Isn't it cognitive distortion such as polarized thinking leading to a cognitive bias? And do you really think, that the strongest feeling LGBT people experienced was a "shame"? I think it was fear. Fear of beeing tortured, killed. From this point of view the best thing I only could wish them is to be calm (of course if we are talking about civilized countries). But I don't accept the concept "to be proud only because of your peculiarity". May be it's a matter of philosphy, but anyway I dont want make you think I denie problems of minorities in the MAJOR part of this planet. You could call me an LGBT ally, but I have nothing to be proud of. It's just a matter of human rights equality.

  • @afonsords

    @afonsords

    DaniOK88 The connection is that they're the two ends of the same spectrum. I didn't say shame was the strongest feeling they felt. I'm saying that's what society taught them how they should feel. Fear came from the person knowing they were in danger because of who they were, that came afterwards. You may personally not accept it but that's how historically social progress happens. It is what it is. And in a day and age where LGBT rights are still so shamelessly violated throughout the world I don't think it's wise to disencourage what is the opposite side of the demeaning shame imposed on LGBT people. When you have an extreme like so many people being taught they have to be ashamed of who they are then the opposite (pride) will appear. If we were in a utopia where everyone was tolerated there would be no needs for gay pride parades.

    Asking people to see "beyond" the labels such as, "Gay", "Lesbian" (to mention a few).Then you use the same words before showing an individual and/or profession ,I get what was intended but, I feel that it was not successful because at the end of the day you are still discriminating to a large degree.The Un could have used words such Human being instead of all the terminology used and that would have worked out better.

    What is the sin of Sodom? Feel free to quote scripture to prove your point ;) At no point does the Bible say Sodom was destroyed because of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or intersex people. And, no, blinding people who wanted to rape angels isn't proof that God killed everyone in Sodom due to some being gay. That's a made up interpretation from some sick manipulative people who have done a great job brainwashing people into believing what you just said.
