Hi there, I'm Christan Long:
Face to face with Emperor penguins on the sea ice near Cape Evans, Ross Sea, Antarctica. This was one of those really special days and I was lucky enough to capture it on camera and enjoy it with my friends Luke, Bonnie, and Dave (driving the bulldozer) who work at Scott Base with me. The job for the day was to set up a dive hut over a dive hole that the guys from the United States Antarctic Program drilled for us. We saw the penguins briefly on the way out to Cape Evans but it wasn't until after we had finished that we really had time to hang out with them. Emperor Penguins are the largest penguin and in my opinion the most majestic. We wandered over towards them and lay down on the ice about 50m away and they walked right up to us. Some would walk to within 1m from us and look at us curiously. Special thanks to Luke, Bonnie, and Dave for being a part of this video and sharing this very special moment out on the sea ice near Cape Evans.

This is the best of the job, taking people out onto the sea ice to see these incredible birds and give some people the best days of their life. Male and female emperor penguins are roughly the same size. They can grow up to about 1.2 meters tall and they can weigh up to 45 kilograms. Their diet consists mostly of fishes but it can also include other things such as krill and squid. From this video, we can know so many things about Emperor penguins.

They have few natural predators so they tend to not fear humans since they typically dont have to worry about being hunted by anything. Additionally the only humans they will ever likely encounter are various types of scientists and maybe some others dealing with logistics of Antarctic bases who pose no threat to them. It is highly unlikely for poachers to hunt penguins on any large scale due to remote region and restrictions so they are unlikely to become a target of human hunting either, they will likely never form a fear of humans for these reasons.

Hello WildKiwiAdventurer, Your videos are fabulous! I am a Physical Therapist working with students in a Special Needs school in Michigan, USA, and during this COVID 19 time of school closure, we are using videos for our primary means of instruction. We are currently creating a series of videos which introduce our students to locations around the world, and we incorporate the PT component by inviting them to move along with us as we explore the locations. I am wondering if we could use some of your Antarctica footage in our segment on cold locations? Would love to show the penguins... Awesome video! Could you loose the music next time? Just listening to the background wind and chatter would be much nicer.

seem to have no special fear of , and have approached groups of explorers without hesitation. This is probably because they have no land predators in Antarctica or the offshore islands they naturally inhabit.
