Fabricating a Turbo Manifold THE RIGHT WAY! - Bmw E30 Circuit Race car

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

True Race Cars can be very hard on components, particularly longer forms of racing such as Circuit Racing and Rally. Add Turbocharging and intake restrictors to the mix and things can get even more difficult and break more often.
On this episode of The Skid Factory we bring in a fabrication expert from Goleby's Parts and Fabrication to work through fabricating a new turbo manifold for a BMW E30 Improved Production Racecar.
We discuss the reasons for failure of the original piece, design changes on the new manifold, material choice and welding processes used.
You might be a pretty competent self taught fabricator but there is always something to learn from a pro, so grab a Lemon Squash, sit back and have a watch as Steady shows us how it's done.

This was a classic skid factory episode. Good technical discussion, long detailed montage showing the end product slowly materializing into a completed state, and some of my favorite music. When you hear that first beat starting, you know it's about to go down. Great episode lads

A turbo overspeeds behind a restrictor for the same reason that a throttle body before the turbo inlet reduces "lag" and a vacuum cleaner revs up when you block the hose. This seems like the perfect place to experiment with a throttle-before-turbo setup and Haltech DBW logic to defeat some of the downside of the restrictor, if you're keen.

Best way to learn how to weld is to start welding. I bit the bullet and bought both a MIG and later a TIG and "taught myself" (with a lot of KZread videos). I tried the practice runs on scrap but got bored after about 10 minutes so just started building things. I highly recommend just getting a welder and giving it a crack.

Made a manifold a few weeks ago based off what I’ve seen on this channel. When I go to do it again I’ll be keen to either implement these ideas or potentially go off the shelf as suggested. I think the thing is that learning and having a go yourself is also enjoyable and you learn something as well. Even if it’s not the prettiest.

I built my first steam pipe turbo manifold a few years ago - purely because I was inspired by Al. I did know how to weld already, but never imagined doing such a project. I'd also be keen to step it up in the future, but honestly, my steam pipe manifold is well up to the job and I doubt it will fail. Sounds like we've both benefited from what we've watched here. 😊

I use a tea light for the purge, tea light on tape trampoline at top opening then a half coke bottle over the top with lid off. The tea light burns till the argon makes it through smothering the flame, and then I use the smoke from the candle to adjust purge flow. Not my idea, they did similar for the original F14 Tomcats titanium wing box. Welding in a vacuum chamber, they used incandescent light bulbs with the glass removed, when the lights started blowing, they had bad gas in the chamber. It was the 60's, they were smart.
