How To Turbo Your Toyota 1HZ on a Budget!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Do you own a 1HZ powered 70, 80 or 100 series Toyota Landcruiser and you're thinking about Turbocharging the engine? The smart way is to buy a 1HZ Turbo Kit and bolt it on at home but what if you've got a Subaru Turbo laying around in the shed?
Today on The Skid Factory we show you how to turbo your 1HZ and include the important tasks like welding a drain into the sump, replacing the big end bearings and where to get oil pressure for the oil feed!
Whilst we completed this job on a "Budget" its possible to do it cheaper by recycling second hand parts or using different materials, If you've got anything to add please comment below and add your opinion!
If you've got a mate that needs to turbo his Land Cruiser please share this video with them!
Thanks to Chris at Evolution Tuning for the runs on the dyno! If you've got a diesel and want some performance gains than send him a message!

I love this... so many people gave me crap for doing mine the budget way , i went the super cheap way with a used 1hdft turbo+manifold off a mate, made oil ligns, sent it (only went this way because the 1hdt manifold flows better in the collector and ive seen guys use the 1hz manifold and get higher egts basically just from flow in the stock manifold... not that anyone shouldnt do it that way, but i had acess to the 1hdt one so i went that way) all in all i did the conversion for under $800

You have to dig through the timing case to get at the oil pump. So having the sump off doesn't make it that much easier. I also have a suspicion that they're not the cheapest thing. I'd assume if the oil pressure is still good you wouldn't go there. I'm not a mechanic. 👍

Years ago I had an 80 (1HDT), an interesting 'trick' I found was swapping out the airbox with one from the 1FZ model, its the same airbox, only the lid is different. Instead of being flattened its a nice radius bend and slightly larger pipework. Just that one change boost increased from 12 to 17psi! without a change to anything else. Wound it back down slightly Shows a major restriction in that one part, made the system more efficient with better boost response

Absolutely love the way these episodes are concocted. Really smooth filming and very pleasurable and easy watching. Great work. Love the outcome! I have the same grandpa spec 1HZ 80 and you have inspired me to get a turbo. Still not fully confident to do it myself but it's great to get all the correct information 😄

The 4.5 petrol 1FZE is a bullet proof engine albeit thirsty, there is a historic video explaining how Toyota designed it for minimal servicing in 3rd world regions, they will do phenomenol mileages with basic servicing as will the 4 speed Aisan auto's, unlike the non turbo diesel manual gearbox that usually loses 2nd gear synchro and overdrive 5th problems by 250k, later 24 valve turbo diesels gained an upgraded gearbox to handle the greater torque. H150 VS H151 if my failing memory serves me correctly. Adding LPG though would often create valve recession as the valve seats were not induction hardened at factory.

Love this channel. All about working on cars ya self. My daily is a 06' NA forester and I've always wanted to just give it a little extra, like rear mount turbo it, and a snorkel. If i didn't have the supra to spend money on in be about it. The Forester has 250km so I don't want to push it, just like I have with the supra. Pensioner life is a thing. I feel like my daily with just 5-9psi would be a game changer but I'd be most interested in the fuel economy savings would be on pump. My JZA80 has a 6262 on it and I have managed to get 712km out of a tank with the factory ECU on 13.4psi. My forester does as best 580km out of a tank with the same tank size. I am a biz lazy making youtube vids but id love to do a comparison when i turbo it one day
