Fable the Raven | Hidden Camera | Raven talking and singing to herself

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Most evenings, once the yard goes quiet, Fable likes to sit and chat to herself. It's her own quiet time to try out her words, play around with the intonation, and try new sounds out.
I really struggle to film her doing this as I can't leave a camera in the aviary or she will destroy it, and if I make it too obvious she will get suspicious and not chat.
So I had a bit of a play with the camera and set it up where I know she prefers to sit, but out of reach! The video is hit and miss as she can go where she likes, but you can hear the audio clear as a bell.
Hope you enjoy seeing a little of her antics.

There’s a crow in my neighborhood that can perfectly imitate a cat. I was outside in the hammock one day reading. Heard a cat, looked around and saw nothing. After another time or two, spotted the crow in one of the trees making the sounds. I have indoor cats that are always at the windows or sliding doors. Felt like the crow was messing with me. 😂

My favorite thing about crow's mimicry isn't necessarily just the fact that they can learn to repeat words from humans, but on top of it they also do their best to imitate the voice of the person they learnt it from, and also when they learn like... artificial/mechanical sounds instead of words/voices. It's just so impressive the depth of detail they can reach

Ooh, I actually know this one! So human speech is formed from complex "compound-sounds" when your larynx (vocal chords) gets the sound started, your mouth and nasal cavities then amplify it, and finally your tongue and lips finish shaping the sound. Birds have what is called a syrinx, which structurally resembles a larynx but is located far deeper in the windpipe about where it branches into the two lungs, which effectively gives them two sets of vocal chords. Some bird families like Corvidae (crows, ravens, jays, ect) and Psittaciformes (parrots, parakeets, cockatiels, ect) have enough control over their syrinx that they can create a separate sound with each set of chords and make an imitation compound-sound which then gets amplified by their nasal cavity. I'm kind of oversimplifing here, but I hope you understand it a little better now.

I once volunteered in a bird sanctuary where they kept a Jackdaw, simply named Jack. Jack had previously lived in a pub, often hanging around indoors interacting with the patrons, up until he was taken away for a mix of health&safety/animal welfare reasons. Either way, he learned exactly two phrases during his days in the pub, the two things he was addressed with most often whilst there. "Hello", and "Fuck off". He'd repeat these two greetings to anyone that he met, with no particular pattern to it. Always made for hilarious (if slightly less "family friendly") moments with guests to the sanctuary. Eg, saying hello to the first three people, and telling the last to fuck off. Never failed to amuse. I was told how he once briefly escaped his enclosure, and flew to sit in a bush beside the road. Gave an elderly woman on her bicycle quite a surprise when a strange voice repeatedly told her to "Fuck off fuck off fuck off" from just beside her as she passed. She came into the sanctuary to inform/ask the staff about a particularly rude bird.

I used to live on site at a job, and quite often in the evenings the ravens would be heard talking really quietly, practicing, then suddenly they'd come out with fully formed 'new' phrases. The pied crows were different, they'd imitate at full volume, and just keep doing it until they'd got it exactly as they wanted it. The jackdaws would pick up phrases off the ravens, and all 6 of them would kick off the how's Ronnie, (one of the ravens). We had a Eurasian magpie that imitated the door locks and bolts being slid, and the doors swinging open on the block he was housed in, and the back of his pen was about 6 foot from my pillow, I awoke many times at first light, thinking we were being robbed. None of the corvids imitated the myriad of owls we had on site, but the local wild jays all made tawny owl noises then we were flying hawks during the spring.

About a year before I was born, my mom rescued a Blue-Fronted Amazon, who at the time was terrified of humans and just about everything else. This may be why his vocabularly is lower than some Amazons' can be, but still he is very sensitive to our tones of voice. When we are sarcastic, he laughs or "groans" sympathetically; when we talk logistics or in a more serious tone to each other, he imitates our voices with these low, gibberish mumbles. And, like many mimicking birds, whenever he says "I love you", it's always with a real softness in his voice, so he does seem to understand the intent of that one perfectly well. While one shouldn't always rely on their instincts when interpreting animal sounds, it's not at all uncommon that their tone of voice will compare to that of a human's when frightened, annoyed, or excited.

There's a small park at the end of my street where a good number of crows hang around. Knowing that crows are very smart and have great memories, I always tell them how pretty they are as I bike through the park in the morning. I hope that has put me in their good graces.

They are quite inteligent. Seems like you have made a friend, they remember our faces and will 'spread the word' if you're good or bad. If bad they will always avoid you and teach that to the rest of the flock. If good - you get interesting visits. It's awsome.

I bet that's exactly what's going on. Parakeets also "practice" their words and phrases. They don't produce speech like we do, so to them achieving mimicry of human speech with their very different vocal apparatus, is probably a lot like playing an instrument to make it produce the desired sound. It takes practice to perfect.

@@KanalFrump I have a car that's fitted with an alarm system and a proximity sensor. The proximity sensor "chirps" electronically and beeps when someone is too close. After about 2 - 3 months, the birds in the surrounding area started making the same electronic "chirp" sound. But I had to disable it; it was getting to be an annoyance.
