Although we Brazilians love video games, we are not one of the countries that produces them the most, so it's really cool to see youtubers commenting and playing our games, especially racing games, since motorsport is another of our passions. Your videos are great, thanks for sharing them with us.

Sadly simracing is extremely niche here, so Automobilista 2 is almost unknown on its own country, despite its popularity outside of Brasil. I wish more games like this got some attention on our gaming media instead of dumb favela simulators...

11:20 - Ground effects were outlawed after the 1982 season, though Gordon Murray and the rest of the Brabham design team were working under the assumption (from their heretofore-well-connected boss, one B. Ecclestone) that they'd be legal for one more year. Consequently, they'd managed to build three examples of the ground effect BT51 and started testing it when FISA said, "Oh by the way, everyone has to run flat-bottom cars starting in 1983." This was about *SIX WEEKS* before the season opener in Brazil, so not only did Murray and staff manage to design and build a second new car during the same off-season, but that car (the BT52) also managed to win on debut and eventually take the drivers' world championship.

The mega high power from the BMW engine was by 1986 where most credible sources quote a maximum power of 1350bhp in qualifying, in 1983 they probably started the season with 650 bhp and by the end of the season they were starting to push 800bhp thanks to advances in fuel technology. Throughout 1984 BMW kept pushing the limits of engine performance with a disastrous effect on reliability, this was a season when Piquet claimed pole in 9 of the 16 races but only won twice with back to back wins in Canada and Detroit and retired in 9 other races!

Thank you for getting the power correct for the 1983 season. I watched the 1983 season (my 1st full season of F1) and have lots of magazines and the Autocourse Book from that year. It amazes me that reiza have got the power figures so wrong in the 83 cars. They are far too quick for that year. I have been trying to make my case on the Reiza forums regarding this issue.

Piquet drove better in ‘84 than he did in ‘83, in my opinion. BMW unfortunately as you said, went for power over reliability, they had a real problem with overheating around the intercooler and used dry ice packed around the bag tank to help with cooling. But when it worked, it WORKED - but TAG-Porsche stole a march that year, and the McLaren chassis handled a bit better as well

I've had an on-off experience with AMS2 since its release - sometimes I have a lot of fun, sometimes I scratch my head confused by the physics, but what now makes up the Formula Classic Gen 4 class was always the one I wanted to be good. On release it was dire, but now it's what I boot the game up for. Trying out the MP4/6 yesterday, along with the VRC SuperTourers released just before, has made me a very, very happy person. What a time to be in this amazing hobby. We really are spoiled.

I was always convinced by AMS2 because the Madness Engine has the best differential- and tyre-flex simulation. If you just model the differential with simple logarithms the transition between a locked and unlocked state is always convenient smooth, but reality must be more harsh if you know more details. I actually miss some of the old physics quirks which I found very reasonable if you know how mechanics in a car function. Most people compare the cars to AC, which doesn't provide any complexity in simulation when it comes to details.

I think BMW reached its peak 1400hp by 1986, not 1983, and the engine capacity for turbos didn't change. Only turbo boost was resctricted to 4.0 bar in 1987 and to 2.5 bar in 1988, having effectively reduced the horsepower twice in qualifying trim. I also recall there were "special" engines and ultra-soft tires in 1991, so that lap records would stand unbeatable for many years, e.g. Senna's 1.21,114 pole at Monza. At Silverstone, the Brazilian clocked at 1.21,618 in his MP 4/6, much faster than you predicted. I personally would like to watch how the races in 1986 and 1991 cars looked like. Those years many teams were close to each other with strong drivers.

Great video as always. One thing I want to correct though is that the MP4/4 wasn't even close to the first carbon fiber monocoque. That distinction, surprisingly enough, actually goes to the MP4/1 from 1981. It was designed by John Barnard. Gordon Murray designed the MP4/4. Within a couple of years of the MP4/1 debut in 1981, most teams were using carbon fiber monocoques. The Lotus 98T had a carbon fiber and Kevlar Aluminum honeycomb monocoque. Love your channel. The cars you feature are near and dear to me, as they are from an era when I first fell in love with auto racing. Keep up the good work.

As Amphibious says MP4/4 is not the Murray car we once thought, and I say that as huge Murray fan. Go to the JayEmmOnCars YT channel, and his interview with Steve Nichols. I was initially sceptical, having bought into the son of BT55 ‘done right’ but as the interview goes on it’s clear Nichols (chief designer) and the design office, that Murray as Technical Director and overseeing quality control at the factory was not really involved as the written history has lead us to believe. Nichols left for Ferrari, and Ron Dennis, and Murray both still at McLaren to be consulted it appears he has acquired more glory than he deserved. kzread.info/dash/bejne/Z4Gum9B6qtayiLg.html Fascinating watch 👆

Thats very interesting. Great video Chris. You learn something new every day, I guess. The story I have heard several times about how the MP4/1 came about goes like this: When Ron Dennis bought into McLaren, he did so from the team he was involved with called Project 4. Project 4 was a Formula 2 and Formula 3 team. They were using carbon fiber to make wings for their cars. When Mr. Dennis came to McLaren, he showed the carbon material to John Barnard as an option for making wings for the McLaren. When Barnard saw the material, he said why don't we make the whole monocoque from it. Many people at the time thought that if the car crashed the monocoque would turn to carbon dust. It's funny how innovation comes about. By the way, the P4 in the McLaren MP4 designated cars was brought with Dennis and stands for Project 4. The cars before Dennis arrived were designated with only an M.

The BT52 is IMO the hardest to drive car in the pack and it isn't close. The Lotus 98T even at 100% boost is a walk in the park compared to the BT52. You really have to create a unique driving style for it compared to any of the other retro gen 3 cars. I find keeping the car in higher gears than you think help keep the back end tame while avoiding the nasty turbo lag you can experience in 1st-3rd gear. The turbo lag really is brutal with default fuel or lower, the lateral grip is the worst in class, and the back end wants to come around super easy unless you fill the car up with a lot of fuel. I'm not sure if it is intentional, but the rear wing is non adjustable and the front wing only has 3 positions I believe. These areo settings are drastically different from every other retro gen 3 car. It has the most potential in class, but I find the generic turbo to be almost as quick over one lap, while being dramatically easier to drive lap after lap. The best drivers though could probably dominate with the BT52.

McLaren pioneered fully carbon fiber tubs, but that went all the way back to the start of the Ron Dennis era and the MP4/1, which lasted from 1981-83. Steve Nichols had previously worked at Hercules (a defense contractor that ended up supplying the materials for McLaren's early carbon fiber cars) and he convinced John Barnard to try using carbon for the whole chassis rather than just bolt-on parts. Seeing both the performance and the crashworthiness of the MP4/1 on track, all the other teams followed suit over the next few years.

To me, I think you can get a really solid understanding of any given car at this track.

I'd still say that the Lotus 49 and 72 are fairly recognizable, in one guise or another. I imagine there may be a few F1 cars that have more outright wins than the MP4/4. Cars like the Alfa Romeo 158/159 and Lotus 49 and 72, as well as the Maserati 250F, come to mind. And as for percentage over a season, Ascari did pretty well in his F2 Ferrari in 1952-53. The Lotus 98T gets more notoriety, but I'd have to say that the 1987 Williams FW11B is still plenty recognizable; that's the car Piquet took to his 3 drivers' title. Senna was certainly one of those most famous for just slinging those turbo F1 cars around a lap in Qualifyng. And even without the side skirts, a number of those cars still had whacking great venturis sticking out the back of them. Come 1988, of course, F1 was looking to phase out the turbos altogether. The 3.5-liter formula was going to kick in in full force in 1989. I think I prefer the look of the MP4/4 over the MP4/5B. Part of it is probably that you don't have the black [Marlboro] lettering to break up that huge, white airbox. Funnily enough, I came in late watching F1 around 2000, and I don't find those to be the best-looking era of F1 cars by any stretch. The 2000 McLaren and Arrows were pretty good, but I definitely prefer the look of a number of the 1985-88 turbo F1 cars. There's a smattering of the 1978-82 machines as well. And then it's back to the wingless wonders of the 1960s and '50s. Some of the '50s cars win in my book in terms of pur sex appeal with the smooth, curvaceous bodywork. (Hey, it's also why I like so many of those Sports Racers and Sports Prototypes of the probably 1955-70 period so much.) Interesting you say that. The 4.0-liter V12 original to the Ferrari 333SP sounds pretty good, but I think the Judd V10 that Doran Lista put in their chassis gives it a run for its money. Williams was also perfecting their active-suspension system, as we'd see in 1992. The bottoming sound effect doesn't sound totally off the mark though, actually.

Steve Nichols sure could design a car. '88 and '16 seasons have this weird thing in common that both teammates came to the last round to decide the championship and the defending champion lost his title to a non-champion, only to claim it back the next season. Useless, but cool info.

AMS2 always seemed interesting but I have never pulled the trigger on it. Iracing is my go to for online and Raceroom for my single player. Though I will go months without touching Raceroom. I like some of the cars and vintage versions of tracks AMS2 as to offer but I just don't see myself playing it much.

I don't think anyone knows which gearboxes were used in the early 90s, a good example is the 1993 Tyrrell. The wikipedia for this car says it's a semi-automatic but footcam from the car shows Ukyo Katayama using heel-and-toe and 3 pedals.

@@GPLaps I like this approach of putting the video first. I do the same, but in VR if I put the seating position where it actually should be, the video output FOV looks far too drawn out. I actually sit a lot closer to the steering wheel, so the video looks like I’m really strapped into the cockpit.

The only thing that I don't like about that DLC is that we can't buy the individual cars. I honestly just want the 91 Mclaren, those are my favourite class to drive in AMS 2 and feels bad to buy 5 other cars that I'm not going to use more than once. With the premium track pack we can buy individual circuits, would be nice to be abled to do the same in this one

Reiza found during mid-2022 they had been battling with the Madness Engine canned physics which was supposed to have been fully disabled. They found the ME physics was still partly in use and was messing up their own physics engine. Once this was discovered, Reiza had to totally overhaul their own physics engine had was compensating for the interference from the ME physics they had not realised was there. This was the cause of one of the delays but a delay we could all get behind. Ever since then AMS2 has grown to be the go to simulator for accurate physics and FFB. Anyone not agree? You need to reset your wheelbase settings and start again without all the nasty little tweaks put in to compensate for slow FFB and physics rates in rf2 and iRacing. Indeed, *each and every simulator needs entirely different wheel setups - there is no one size fits all.* I run every sim in competition you can possibly imagine; each has an entirely different wheelbase configuration as a baseline per sim, followed by changes for each vehicle car depending on its drive line physics. One thing to note, if your wheelbase is under 5Nm, you will only ever have "gamey" FFB. Complaining about FFB "reality" when you are running a G920 is pointless. There is nothing wrong with using a G29/920 and the like (my boys use my old G920 on PC and XBOX), but using the word "realistic" with such a wheelbase shows a lack of experience. Once you go Direct Drive or even a decent belt-driven wheel, you will come to understand of what I write.
