The Green Hell's Safety Revolution - 1971 Nordschleife History & Race - Automobilista 2

Ойындар

I've truly been transported in time. What else is there to say? A fun look at this awesome slice of history. We must be thankful the efforts were taken in the early 70s to improve the Nordschleife's safety. The investments made then, although not enough to keep Formula 1 at the circuit, have kept it possible for sportscars and other series to continue to race. Captured here as it was immediately following the first upgrades, Reiza have done an outstanding job in bringing this classic to life.
Its always fun to run the Ring!

Hey Jake, I made my first lap on the Nordschleife in 1976 with a 50cc/6,25HP motorbike, called "Hercules". Since I added a few more laps. By the time I reached about 2000 Kilometers on it (nearly 100 laps) and it stays to be my favorite racetrack. My best lap was on a Yamaha RD 350 LC, in about 10 Minutes. Been there for national holidays like "Pfingsten and Ostern" with many friends, a campfire, a lot of alcohol and a lot of fun. you can't imagine how good these times were. Now, in August I celebrate my 65th Birthday, I ḿ eager to restaurate my Yamaha RD 350 YPVS, which may take a year or so, but I definitively race a last lap on that course. 😎

I adore long tracks. Bullrings have their appeal, but a long track feels more like an adventure. A dash through the countryside - like parkour for cars. The longer the better, for me. It's why I'm so drawn to the Targa Florio, why I fell in love with Gran Turismo's Sierra Time Rally, and why I'm so grateful the Nordschleife still exists.

Me too, I feel like a hamster on a regular length track. Altho' Ams2 isn't my favourite sim, it looks good and is great fun. I prefer hot lapping, that's where my passion really lies but racing the AI in Ams2 can be so immersive, great looking tracks and great weather models, really is something. I can see myself getting into this historic version, altho' racing on the Nordscheife I find terrifying 🤣 but perhaps in the BMW 2002, that maybe less stressful. I like the historical Belgium circuit and of course the legendary TT

I am old enough to remember tracks from the late 70’s on TV and one of the biggest joys is immersing myself in the tracks and cars of that era. This AMS2 build is breathtaking. Some of the bumps are a bit fear inducing but getting an opportunity to turn a lap around a track that has change so much over the years but still requires maximum attention is wonderful. Keep up the excellent videos!

I was in Europe a few years ago, and decided to rent a car for 2 laps around there. A proper caged race car, but not super fast. Best money I have spent in years. Just enjoyed the laps. I have been lucky. I have raced sprint cars around the likes of Eldora, Knoxville and Husets. I've driven a formula ford around Watkins Glen and Barber SAAB around Lime Rock. Those two laps at the Nordschleife, are among my favorite memories at speed.

I'm starting to wonder if Reiza would be best off focusing on creating a purely historic racing sim. There's definitely a market for it, and it never dates. You don't end up with endless complaints about the cars and tracks not being updated to the latest spec lol.

Great video, thank you very much! You had a great look into the history, and thank you for remembering Gerhard Mitter, who tragically died in 1969. Your inclusion of the historic background made it more apparent how much Reiza cared when they made this track, and how much love and attention to detail went into it.

When a build of the historic Ring comes out I always look for the tree on the run up to Karussell. In a number of books of the time drivers had said they used this tree as a marker. If you line up with it directly ahead you'll drop straight into the banking with no issue. Good to see the tree is there as it should be!

Jackie Stewart mentioned that tree as a reference point for the Karussell for a promotional film back in the day. And I'm pretty sure it's no way related to the slightly more famous Rebel Tree...

Fantastic video as always. The track is stunning in VR, sits right up there as one of the most immersive tracks there is. I've turned 100's of laps on the modern version, so this is immediately familiar yet so completely alien all at the same time. You can really appreciate the huge elevation changes and I love the feeling of scale, the hidden glimpses through the trees, the rounding of a blind corner and suddenly being able to see far off to the distance, seeing a tiny ribbon of tarmac snaking off into the hillside. I've mainly been using the Formula Vintage Gen. 2, because I love those cars, but must give the Retro Gen 1 a go sometime soon.

I have been playing the modern version of the Nordschleife in both AC/ACC/BeamNG for while, and the most shocking thing for me about this version is the openness of the track, just the lack of trees around the beginning area and how further the trees are to the track. It really puts a new perspective on the Nordschleife, though ironically it being a older version of the track. Also Great Commentary, as usual!

This was a superb presentation, from the history of this magnificent track to the commentary during the race, you truly added to the value of what Reiza has brought us. Kudos to them for nailing it in the head by taking historic tracks and cars this seriously. Reiza, if you are listening, what you have done to bringing us historic content is highly appreciated. It gives us a chance to step back in history and get a taste of what it must've been like to risk your life for glory. You guys are making Automobilista the best series in my book. Like Jake said, more historic content will only make us more content (no pun intended) and will only expand your client base. This is truly a gift.

I drove this track in July of 1970. There was no construction going on anywhere and it didn't appear they were getting ready to do construction either and the track didn't look freshly paved. Glad I missed all that and got to drive the original road.....both north and south circuits. 9:56...@ Metzgesfeld is where my father went straight as he had no idea the road turned left. In a sedan it was a trip in a field and a short trip back on the track. This '71 set up would've totaled our car. Great memories brought back here. Thank you

Yes another great video I have a very good book on the History of GP cars that has been long out of print. It contains most of the track maps for practically ever Track from the very start of Auto racing so most of the legendry Street GP courses. Including the original Nordschleife . I am sure there is a market for historical content in simracing. Just like you find in Flightsim 2020. But I also on a recent trip home to the UK I really lucked in when in an Antiques shop I found a copy of Rudolf Caracciola auto biography and two other period driver books from the 20's through to the 50's .but his description of racing and winning at Avus or the Nordscheife or the Tripoli races are just incredible plus his sadness dealing with the amounts of deaths at most races during that period or serious injury. These people were harder for sure but it took it toll of them mentally and physically. But thanks to games like this we can get an idea of what it must have been like and without the risk to life that they faced. I now live and work in Germany so frundliche grüß von Hamburg .

Fantastic representation of the Ring. Judging by that race, it looks like Pescarolo really was rambunctious trying to get every ounce of power out of that BRM. If the other tracks from the 1971 season are due to be included, I predict further ongoing adventures of Richie Axelson. You're already halfway there with the colour scheme of the Surtees.

Inside and outside of sim racing I believe the draw to big tracks (The Ring, Pike's Peak, Isle of Man, Targa Florio, Circuit de la Sarthe, etc) for myself and others is that each lap or running was so long that once you made one it feels like a great accomplishment. And there is more variety be it changing of scenery or race dynamics since the pack gets to spread to the point where you can be fighting thru traffic for a bit and then find yourself alone for a bit. And racing with nothing but the wilds on either side and minimal infrastructure to be seen can be incredibly exciting and relaxing at the same time.

These cars are beyond beautiful... Short and bulky, massive wheels , unlimited engine power, no electronics and only driving skills, and most of all no safety for the driver, amazing ! Damn I love the experimental 70's and the insane 80's

AMS2’s 1991 F1 cars are slightly scary around here… just for a laugh I was driving as Mansell with the amazing skin mod from RD this morning around the Gesamtstrecke, omg so much fun albeit a bit bonkers! Something I love about sim racing is the ability to do things that would never be possible in real life, experiencing modern cars on old circuits or vica versa 😂

I have an unofficial copy but after seeing this i'm sold. Nordschleife is my favorite track sim racing combined with VR. This looks incredible.

I would wish to race on a pre 1967 version of the Nürburgring Gesamtstrecke. So the old Brünnchen, the old Hohenrain section, Schwalbenschwanz, Quiddelbacher Höhe with the jump before Flugplatz.

Hi there. Do you usually answer comments? This is gorgeous, in lack of a better word. Ok, I'm 57 and this video brings back old childhood memories, watching black white tv F1 broadcasting here in Portugal. This is, as far as I know, the best rendition of those glorious times. I love your spoken introduction and comments who are probably intended for younger and American audiences, less familiar with European vintage racing, but I've learned so much with your videos too. I don't have a PC powerful enough to run this beautiful games, but I don't care as long as you do more of this. Could please show us the Zeltweg track in Austria? And how about the REAL 24H Spa Francorchamps for touring cars? Thanks in advance.

Im glad you enjoyed and appreciate the rendition of these circuits! I wish Zeltweg were in any of the newer sims but it only exists in GPL as far as I know. Maybe ill have to make a trip over there at some point!
