I would like to sincerely thank Jagg2Zero for his very valuable and kind contribution of several of the clips shown in this video. He made most of the demonstration clips to illustrate the effects of the machine’s weight on performance. Additionally, all clips from the tracks Space Plant, Sand Ocean 2, Port Town 2 and Big Hand are his work. He also made the clips showcasing the DTA technique in combination with AGG. Under rated game. Sometimes I think games don’t really need to be totally reignited by reinvention but by simple additions. An online play that allows the community that still exists for this game to connect with new tracks and an increased difficulty setting to challenge drivers to increase their abilities would be perfect for this game. I think sometimes game creators focus too much on an absolute over haul or desperately hold onto the hope that graphics alone will create a great game. Nice video! Whoa you’re way out in front! *grand prix victory theme plays*

    I'm currently "getting into" the game. I used to play it a lot on the N64 back then but never knew how "deep" the gameplay actually is. For me it was a great achievement beating the Master Cups.. but now i'm hunting the Staff Ghosts and it is so much fun to beat a time after hours of practice and finally getting some drifts right and beating a staff ghost. This gameplay aged really well.

    Thanks, i'm sure you heard F-Zero x was just added to the switch and this guide came quite handy. Also it's interesting that a lot of these mechanics don't go into Super Mario 64 levels of BS with the BLJ and all, it's cool that you're able to reach high speeds without breaking the game although that section where you have to jump past half the course raises a few red flags, i'm down to learn these mechanics very cool.

    I really appreciate you making this video, as I've wanted a guide to the movement in F-Zero X for a long time, but couldn't find one until I found yours on a whim. However, I have a disability that impacts my ability to process sounds and speech, and so it's very difficult for me to understand what you're saying, due to my unfamiliarity with your accent as well as the volume of the music being very close to the volume of your speaking. Would you be willing to add subtitles? I'm sure it would help others, as well. Again, thanks for making this video!

    Damn. As a completionist, I'm usually very persistent with at least finishing the "campaign" at the highest difficulty. But this game is giving me second thoughts... Especially after destroying novice and standard, and then not being able to beat the Jack cup in expert after many attempts. Imagine another racing game, say any Need for Speed, where your car starts to slide if you turn the wheel more than an infinitesimal amount, and where you have to do some kind of double tap jump to take a sharp corner otherwise you see 15 cars fly past you after you exit. Just frustrating... Thank for the info though, maybe I'll work out the patience to practice all this...

    I just have one other question, you know how to get to the jack? The one you can unlock , the one after the King . As far as I know you have to beat all the first 3 in standard difficulty. However do you happen to know, if you can access it also, by only beating the beginning and queen ones in all 3 difficulty settings: easy, standard, and hard difficulty? And i'm not even concerned with the X one, i'll never be able to beat any race in this game on the hardest difficulty.

    Not sure if you need to beat it on standard or expert to be honest to unlock Joker Cup. I can't even remember the last time I played GP on anything else than Master. You don't need to because there is a code to unlock everything: At the title screen, press start to get the mode select, and enter: L-Shoulder, Z, R Shoulder, Up-C, Down-C, Left-C, Right-C, Start.

    What configuration on deadzone (and others) can use for a comfortable driving using the joystick of modern controllers and settings on the emulator?

  • @WMJSpeedruns

    @WMJSpeedruns

    It's not a simple answer. I use an Adaptoid USB to N64 adapter. That one is very good. Good settings are 0% deadzone and 66% sensitivity in the Nrage plugin. Different controllers and adapters would need different settings. In general don't use any deadzone and tweak the sensitivity to where you don't lose grip too quickly when turning.

    @@WMJSpeedruns Do you recommend an original first party N64 controller, or one of the modern third party ones such as the hori mini pad, brawler64, or tribute? Is it as simple as cleaning an original analog stick to tighten them up, or do you prefer them to be looser for a decreased sensitivity/easier time controlling grip?

  • @WMJSpeedruns

    @WMJSpeedruns

    @@hugunr I only really play with the first party controllers. It actually depends on the player if you prefer them a little worn on the control stick or not. I like really new controllers. I grease some of the gears inside the control stick (there are some guides on this with pictures) to make them last very long. Hori Pad is no good for F-Zero because the control stick is just too sensitive.

    I beat the game with side attack cornering only. I never really learned how to use drift mechanic, and actively avoided it because I couldn't control it. This play style made the game stupidly difficult I think.

    "The game was optimized for the N64 controller... Using any other controller would be seriously handicapping yourself." Well, that might explain why I can't even nudge in the direction of a turn on the Switch version without my machine fishtailing at a hard angle. Is this pursuit hopeless, or do I just need to keep practicing? Would using the wireless N64 controller for Switch be closer to the original hardware?

    On the side attack section, why did you mention that it only works up to 30 presses per second? Because it's impossible to even do that. I'm just curious why you mention it.

  • @WMJSpeedruns

    In practice it means that the faster you mash the buttons the sharper you can take the corners. There's many instances where this can come in handy. There's no risk in mashing too fast as indeed nobody can exceed the 30 presses per second that would make it slower.

    Why is it when You demonstrate the side attack cornering, your ship seems to turn very smooth. However when I do it, my ship kind of jumps from side to side, from the outside of the corner, to the inside(when I take a right corner I double tap R as soon as I start turning the control stick, assuming that that's the proper way to do it in most cases). How do you make it so smooth? I've only tried it on the first two rows of ships, I don't know if that makes a difference. I don't understand how you do that. ( And I frequently corner at lower speeds than you , because i'm not very good at this game, don't know if that makes a difference either. (

  • @WMJSpeedruns

    @WMJSpeedruns

    Side attack before you steer into the corner and then keep mashing the side attack button as quickly as possible is the fastest way to take corners. If you steer a little before the side attack the ship will jump from side to side much quicker. Sometimes you need this for super sharp corners.
