Even this American has to admit, from Köln Hbf to Frankfurt Airport in under an hour is pretty impressive. That's nearly an hour faster than by car. I lived in Germany for four years. During that time, I had a few bad experiences with DB the few times I used it. One was on a RegioBahn trip that had to go right back to my town because of a problem with the track a couple towns over. Second and third times were issues with unscheduled delays. One of those instances was due to an unannounced rail workers strike. However, I was usually pretty happy with them, all things considered.

    Another thing to take into account is that the airport is on the south side of Frankfurt - meaning, you'll have to go through the Frankfurt area with the car. It's a lottery and highly dependent on the time of day how long that's going to take you.

    Technically, the banking curves serve other purposes than to keep traction. Superelevation (the term for banking curves) increases passenger comfort in curves by reducing lateral G-forces, prevents the train from tipping over, and most importantly, reduces wear and tear on both the rails and wheels by reducing the chances that flanges touch the rails at speed. :)

Was war geschehen?

    I went from Düsseldorf to Stuttgart through Frankfurt am Main Flughafen and Köln with the ICE 4, while I love the ICE 4 for it's looks and comfortable and modern interior, it is for me kinda lacking in speed with it topping out at 250km/h

  • @jan-lukas

    @jan-lukas

    250km/h (now 265km/h on some train sets) is enough for the majority of routes, and the routes where 300km/h is possible, like this one, are mostly served by ICE 3s of which new ones are being delivered currently

Here's a difference between the way Europe and the US treat rail travel; here they build whatever infrastructure is necessary (the 3 trestle bridges) to facilitate fast and efficient rail travel while in the US all three routes would be sharing two tracks on one bridge, and inevitably one track would be out of service for maintenance.

  • @Pheer777

    @Pheer777

    The US has highly developed freight rail infrastructure but the lines are owned by the freight rail companies so it’s not efficient to run passengers rail on them as they would always need to yield to freight traffic

    Das beste daran ist aber dass man als Passagier eigentlich nicht viel davon mitbekommt. Die Laufruhe dieser Züge ist so gut, bei 160 merkt man nichts. Und wenn man merkt dass der Zug mal etwas mehr zittert, dann stehen auf der Anzeige 300+ km/h.

    I wish Germany had longer contiguous stretches of HSR, like Spain and France do, and there are very few east-west high-speed lines. The new Stuttgart - Ulm line will help with that somewhat, but it should continue all the way to Augsburg.

  • @jan-lukas

    Germany has a completely different country structure that has several downsides for HSR: because of many somewhat large cities there are a lot of stops with decent amounts of passengers and all the small towns need to be avoided when building new lines. This means that we can't build as much rail as easily as other countries. But still, construction speed has to pick up FAST if we want to stay a competitor

  • @jan-lukas

    @jan-lukas

    Also the Augsburg-Ulm HSR line is currently in the planning stages. It will hopefully be built for 300km/h but served by 250km/h trains that can go faster to reduce delays

    Such a route must also be worthwhile, Germany is much more densely populated, so HSRs make sense. BC alone is almost 3 times as big as Germany, but only has about 6% of the population, so Germany is 18 times more densely populated than BC! But maybe a route between Washington and BC (Seattle and Vancouver) makes sense?
