I think I can speak for many of us agreeing with Kortana about doing a high alt fight. Regardless I hope there are many vids like this to come. The banter and S talking between blue and red during the fight had me dying. Kortana trying to hold back the lol’s flying Cap into the ground was way funnier than it should have been.

Very entertaining! A few thoughts: 1. There's a wide range of skill on the GR team, but it seemed that the more experienced folks weren't switching sides regularly. We saw Kortana slaying in the MiG-15, but I don't recall seeing her in the F-86. Simba seemed to be in the MiG-15 for both of the group engagements etc. Would be interesting if the teams really did switch sides completely for the group fights, would even out any skill disparities. 2. As others have mentioned, the Sabre's biggest advantages are speed in a dive (up to Mach 0.95 controllable IIRC) and a much superior roll rate. It would be interesting to see pilots use the roll rate more (scissors, etc) against the MiG if this fight happens again.

This was a really fun one to watch. Great Job Cap & Crew! @Grim Reapers ☺

That Mig had a Rolls Royce engine and we now train Chinese pilots. So proud to be British.

This seemed like a situation where the pilots were better than the planes. Everyone did some amazing maneuvering in the air dueling. Simba, Kortana and Violet are really good at dogfighting. Love These videos!

From what I've found doing a cursory search the K/D ratio of this duel in real life depended upon the skill of the pilots. When Soviets had some of their best pilots in Mig Alley the ratio was 1.4/1 in favor of the Sabre. After the Soviets pulled their pilots and replaced them with NK and Chinese the ratio ballooned to 5.6/1 in favor of the Sabre. The American pilots were, in general, just better trained.

Re the VK-1, reminds me a bit of the Brits selling the Dreadnought concept (particularly Parson's steam turbine tech that enabled the whole box and dice to work) to the world in the early 20th Century. Who knows, but it could've stopped the first arms race of the last century.

There's a History Channel series called the Top 10 ... of All Time and they take the best of every military hardware ever made and rank them. The number one was the P51D Mustang and the Mig 15 and the Sabre tied for number 3 (I think). But when one of the experts said if one of the American Sabre pilots ever saw a Mig 15 up close they would smirk with disdain at how crude and "slapped" together they appeared. Rivets missing, poorly fitted panels, etc. Like most Soviet hardware, they were more interested in quantity over quality. Take a good design, like the T-34 tank or the Mig 15 and start cranking them out. They lived by the motto "quantity has a quality all it's own"

Chuck Yeager nearly got killed in a MIG -15 in a dive (Mach 0.97), while he had a F-86 up to 1.05 in a dive and recovered with no problem. The F-86 had a 1.3+:1 Kill Ratio v. the MIG-15 when flown by elite Soviet Pilots.

Great fights ..... sorry to let you down a bit but my track IR batt died so my view was locked and could not turn my head...... silly me :) Tons of fun anyway and very close calls :)

Cap's 6 o'clock is his eternal weakness. That Kortana/Simba tag-team rope-a-dope was a thing of beauty to watch. 😘 These dogfight videos are just SO much fun to watch. Keep em coming!

Another interesting bit on how the Soviets got their version of the Rolls-Royce engine is that their first attempts were not very successful because they were not using the right alloy to build the engine. The were invited to visit the R-R factory in England and their delagation members wore shoes with soles designed to collect the chips and scraps from the floor. They analysed their harvest and found out what to build the engine with.

Hey I just wanted to say that wing loading won't instantly make the plane a better turn/rate fighter, the airfoil, thrust to weight ratio and other smaller stuff will matter aswell.

We all have the same problem. SU-57 currently has only a partial working Flight Model(hence why we rarely use it), so seems a little bit pointless not to wait until it's ready?

f86 uses flaps in dog fights. Slow it down and turn inside the Mig

Do they not model the lead computing Gunsight of the F-86? One of the biggest advantages the F-86 had over the MIG was the gunsight. When the target was at the proper range and deflection the gunsight would light up letting the Sabre Pilot know when to pull the trigger. The other advantage that I know they probably don't model is the MIG-15 had a simple cable and pully control system where the Saber had hydraulically enhanced controls. The faster the MIG-15 flew the harder it was for the pilot to get it to turn due to the force required to pull on the stick. Sabre pilots learned to keep the fight as fast as possible where with the hydraulically enhanced controls would let them EASILY outmaneuver the MIG-15.

Sabre is much far more forgiving as far speed control goes which is going factor into the results. Getting hits is also somewhat easier. This match up is definitely down to pilot skill but I would beat myself with the MiG most of the time thanks to the higher thrust and better sustained turn capability.

Do we know what version of the browning is modeled for the saber in DCS?

I found it amusing .. could only happen to SuperCap ... the Mig is very dangerous in the right hands .. I have a soft spot for Migs esp the 17. Good fights though .

Great stuff. Again. I much prefer these pre-missile fights. Lobbing long range AIM120D at each other from 100 miles is just not my bag of chips. Hell, I even feel guilty when using a 40 mile amram. Loved this. More please

Shows why the Sabre needed the leading edge slats. If you add them try this again.

The only problem with doing this on CPU is you can't feel the effects of the flight controls. Yeah the Mig 15 could rate with a Sabre, but for how long? The Sabre had Hydraulic assisted flight controls so the pilot could do a high g turn all day. The Mig was cable control so the pilot had to use brut force to keep the Mig in a high G turn. The Mig pilot would eventually tire out.

Predict :MiG-15. All else being equal, the .50 cal in DCS is like shooting confetti. Hope I'm wrong....

Mig is a pure dogfighter a ton and a half lighter and same power. The 3-6 wing of the Sabre gives it more lift, but not enough. In a dogfight the Sabre will use up any energy management as it eventually will meet the ground. Running out of dive space. Only defense is an excellent roll rate. Mig will always suppress the Sabre as it can climb to 50k ft and stay there. Like the P47 had against the Me109 and Fw190. In a dogfight both were better than the P47. P47 needs to use high speed and leave the battle space to regain its energy.

Works for a while if you have more energy. But the Mig has more thrust/weight and will retain the perch better regaining its potential energy. Mig turns better Sabre Rolls better. Mig is 3000+lbs lighter. If the Mig pilot had a G-suit…Sabre pilot better have altitude!

Hi Guys. Just came across your Mig-15 V F86 Sabre video. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I believe that the Mig-15 was superior to the F86 in most aspects of dog fighting because it was able to retain a higher energy level for a longer period of time. Although much came down to the overall skills of the respective pilots, the higher energy level of the Mig-15 did give an overall advantage. It wasn't until the Avon Sabre came along that the 86 was able to realise an overall dogfight advantage over the Mig-15. It would be great to see the Grim Reapers slog it out in an Avon Sabre V Mig-15 battle, both 1v1 and melee. Cheers 👍

Hi,.you guys should try some historical scenario's which lost at the time but see if you guys can turn it round with your expertise. Eg= hat if early warning scenario's where enabled/eg= peral harbour, etc etc.

It would be interesting to match the MiG’s cannons against the Australian version of the Sabre with 2x30mm Aden canons with 162 rounds per gun. - pity it isnt available in DCS.

The Mig had other problems not depicted in the sim... when diving the cockpit would fog up and blind you. As for the pilot skill, they were pretty equivalent.. The Migs and the F-86s were both flown by skilled and experienced WW2 pilots. The Kill ratio was 2:1 in favor of the F-86.

Fun vid. Yeah I'm not sure about matching the Bis against vanilla F86's,if that is what they were. I am fairly sure that the Mig was marginally better in the turns but had more vices as an airframe as well, possibly better energy retention. Historically the Sabre and US pilots that were well trained and many with WWII experience did very well against Korean and Chinese pilots who were poorly trained and noviced more often than not. The Clandestine Russian pilots did better, close to 1:1 kill ratio. There was a lot of over claiming of kills from both sides in that war. I think a lot of it would have come down to tactics, who saw who first and who had the advantages at the opening of an engagement.

Interesting that Mig and Sabre can use full thrust without over heating compared to Prop fighters and WEP.

In reality I think these jets probably did over-heat after a while. Prob not modelled in game.

im not 100% sure about how you guys have the planes set up, but i always try to make sure my oxygen is at 100% before i enter a dogfight in the sabre

Wing loading doesn't do that much to be honest. The MiG-15 is better than the Sabre in almost every aspect of dogfighting, except roll rate. The MiG has an abysmal roll compared to most fighters, at practically every speed. One good tactic would probably be to lure the MiG into a flat scissor and cause it to overshoot.

Please tell me if I am wrong, but didn't the Sabre have a radar ranging gunsight, which the Mig-15 lacked? Would that not also give the Sabre a big advantage in it ability to put rounds on target?

It does, though it has issues with ground clutter. The .50's can be fired very accurately when you can employ it though.
