On this channel we like to do a lot of dogfighting most videos are some sort of dogfight between 2 different aircraft as we explore their different capabilities. From time to time I like to dabble in Virtual Reality, I think VR is a great new technology and I love to show that stuff off for the channel from time to time.
If you enjoy war thunder or Microsoft flight simulator 2020 or even dogfighting in Battlefield 2042, consider getting yourself into Digital Combat Simulator by Eagle Dynamics, the Combat side of Aviation with the BVR and Dogfights really provides a different and interesting perspective on aviation. You can fly all kinds of combat aircraft including the F-16, F-15, F-14, JF-17, Su-27, Mig-29, Mirage and the F-18 Hornet along with many other aircraft and helicopters like the Ka-50 and Mi-8.

Apparently, the Soviets copied the B29 so exactly that all Tu4s had a half white/half green access tunnel between the cockpit and the rest of the aircraft. Boeing had simply run out of green paint when they built the captured aircraft. They also copied a small hole in one of the wings where a Boeing worker had mistakenly drilled a rivet hole in the wrong place.
The Tu-4 was copied from an early block B-29, so the plane inherited a lot of the faults of those early Superfortresses, which were rectified in later production models. But the copying was very exact--Stalin wanted an exact replica of a B-29, and except for stuff they had trouble sourcing or reverse engineering, like the R-3350 engines, it pretty much was, right down to the Boeing logo on the control yokes.
@alanluscombe8a553

Did they really have Boeing logos on the yolk? Wonder why. Did they want to play it off like they didn’t build their own?

Excessive literalism was a safe way of dealing with Stalin's directives. It's not uncommon in some cultures. Back in the 19th century, captains of tea clippers would often have new suits of clothing made by expert Chinese tailors for a fraction of what they would have paid in London. One day, a captain brought in a pair of white duck trousers that had worn through in the seat, and been patched with some gray fabric. "Make me a new pair of trousers just like these":, he told the tailor. He came back two weeks later to be handed a magnificent pair of white duck trousers--with a big patch of gray cloth on the seat.@@alanluscombe8a553

One of the biggest issue with the B-29 was that later upgraded iterations were not named the Super-Duper Fortress.
While unfortunate that your wingmen couldn't be of more use than just distraction in the end; it is quite impressive, in any era, to be made an Ace in one mission.
@amizaur3marcinostrowski186

It takes just a competent pilot and a target rich environment ;-).
FYI, after the fall of the Soviet Union. Tupolev engineers admitted that the Tu-95 Bear, even with its turboprop engines and its swept wing, was just an evolution of B-29 Super Fortress and Tu-4 Bull into its logical conclusion. For those wondering PLM stands for Pilot Lock-on Mode.

Part of the reason it was heavier was that the Soviets were using the metric system rather than the imperial system. They didn't have sheet metal for the skin in thickness that matched. It was either slightly thinner or thicker. They went with thicker.
@seanmurphy7011

And that is why the metric system is studier than the freedom system.
@GlowingSpamraam
4 ай бұрын
you are aware metric and imperial is just a measuring system half an inch is just 12,7 mmfor example i say this as an apprentice machinist who uses both, there is nothing about metric (or imperial) that would require you to use a thinner or thicker thickness than you would need, you just simply convert and then make a plate the same thickness in the other system so if i have a half inch plate and i want to make that in metric, i convert half an inch to metric and make a 12,7mm plate you can do this for extremely thin thick or anything in between plates and just convert whatever measurement you made it in to another measuring system if i have a sheet metal plate of a certain thickness, whether im using imperial or metric wont change how thick that plate is, just the number and system describing the thickness seems there is alot of misinformation going around of the mig-23 with alot just making no sense/being dreamed up
@mactavish313

@@GlowingSpamraam First off, he's referring to the TU-4, which was reverse engineered. Second, typically you're not changing your entire sheet-metal production process for 1 plane. You're using what's available. It was metric, and it was thicker, so that's what they used. Pretty easy to look this up.
@fkboyStalin

@@GlowingSpamraam yeah that's true, but if you are using mass produced materials and don't wanna start a new production line/alter your current product, you're gonna need to use what you've got whether it should be that size or not.

Hey this was an amazing video. My old man was one of the last of the F-4 pilots in the Air Force and sadly he is no longer with us. He was a quiet man and never talked much about his experience so it would be cool if you do more F-4/Cold War scenarios. Thanks for the vids!
I wonder what the debrief on this mission would be like? "Congratulations on making ace in a day and bagging a bomber but what happened to the rest of your flight?"
The sparrows cooperated very well today.
Appears that your buddies were not pulling their weight. You got all 4 MiG23s which means they got none. 1 MiG didnt have time to kill anything, so the other 3 scored kills before you disassembled them. Need more Growling Sidewinders in the Sqdn.
I love watching these F4’s so much. Especially your Vietnam type missions you do. Those are my favorite videos for me personally. Which is weird because I have no particular reason to enjoy that era of warfare. I’m a Marine grunt that was in at the beginning of the GWOT. I have called in a few air strikes on some enemy, but other than that I have never had any association with the Wing. I enjoy all the videos though really, it’s been a long time since I’ve missed even a day of your posts. I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that for me being a ground pounder my whole life, I like seeing what the wingers deal with, especially the aviators. For me, your videos show a side of the military I didn’t really deal with much. And your explaining things like strategy and how to use your aircraft strengths to exploit the enemy’s weaknesses are really informative and interesting to me! Thanks for all the work you put into these videos. And respect for the thousands of hours you’ve had to have played to reach the level of competence that you have. That is serious dedication and discipline! No joke! 🙏💪👍

Early sparrows required 4 seconds of lock before you could fire. Later variants allowed as little as 1.5s for navy but the Air Force still required 4 seconds per the manual

You are so correct about the history of the Tu-4 Bull. Too bad you couldn’t use Tomcats on this mission.
MiG 23 is pretty good. One of my most played planes in war Thunder. With the wings fully out that thing holds energy very well. Also the thrust to weight.

Always entertained by your vids GS! youve grown a heckofalot the past few months!
I just climbed through a B29 a few weeks ago along with a B24. The B29 had notches in the bay so it could fit the fins on a nuclear bomb like big boy. It also had a round air duct looking thing on the ceiling that the guys had to crawl through to get to the rear guns because the B29 was the first airplane to be pressurized and they crawled over the bomb bay because that couldn’t be.

While VF-143 will always be near and dear to my heart, seeing those F-4Bs in VF-84 livery is a very close second...
They weighed more because they used sheet metal measuring in millimeters instead of decimals of an inch. The nearest metric equivalent gauge was slightly thicker because it had to be.

Good man
I love those 60's/70s era dogfights.
An interesting note about the reverse engineering of the B-29. The B-29 in question had at some point before she found herself in Russian hands suffered battle damage that was repaired using sheet metal patches. The Russians had copied her so closely that the early production TU-4's included these "repair" patches.
As far as I know the soviets had been playing with the idea of a variable sweep wing, along with several other countries. The concept however, was thought to be unsafe until NASA disproved this. This led to the creation of the F-111 and after this the MiG-23
An ace in one sortie!
I think it'd be super sick if he got like 2-3 other guys together to do an insanely one sided battle (eg: 4v12 or 3v9)

You think the soviets copy of a B29 was in service for a long time remember the B52 is still going.
11:27 the guy was doomed. Look at those wing angles - he was low-energy and nose up with a fox-2 incoming.
I watched a little doco once wherein it was said that the top speed of the MiG 23 was unknown because it would come apart before reaching it. Meaning, the plane would just keep giving as much speed as the pilot asked for until the wings wouldn't stay on. Sounds kind of nonsensical but there it is.
