My Father rebuilt a castle house in Hollywood. Many of the ceilings were vaulted curved and ornate. He ended up hiring a dear old carpenter friend to help him as he had extensive knowledge in how to construct those ceilings. They were beautiful but probably one of the most complicated and difficult tasks. Along with a stone spiral staircase those were a master builders’ projects. They used rare and precious woods so waste was not an option. I felt privileged to observe and see the finished castle.❤

@@suburbanhomestead I think it depends on what you plan to do with the rest of the house. If you want a cohesive feel aesthetically, I would not do the barrel ceiling unless you plan to keep some design concepts throughout the house to tie it together. Otherwise it will be the odd room.

If you own the home and plan to be there for a while, add the barrel ceiling and library ruins if it's more than a notion and something that you want to invest the time and effort in for the end result. There is nothing like curling up under a throw with a good book and a cup of tea or hot chocolate in a room that's cozy and you can just "be". Yes, it will be a lot of work and only you know if it's worth it. If you decide to go for it, LET US SEE 🙂!

Would love more of this house content, especially in winter when we are all more focused on making our homes feel cozy like yours.

When he started wallpapering the wall with pages of a dictionary, you had to hoover my jaw off the floor! This was no run of the mill home reno video with all ikea pieces, but truly a work of art and passion. Even the video style, narration and editing are all wonderfully engaging. Hoping you do more interior/construction videos or even art projects, for instance, I absolutely *need* a video on that gorgeous canvas tapestry that you conjured out of nowhere and called a rug! Great stuff!

That's perfect I never really cared for the open floor plans that everybody got into. I'm hearing now that people are going back to having more individual rooms in their house. Let's face it there's times we need to separate and be alone.

I don't know why this popped up on my feed but I'm so glad it did. You've turned an awkward space into one of the loveliest rooms I've seen. The finish on the shelves is perfect and all the curios and art work make it a wonderful sanctuary and cosy space to linger in. I would leave the upper shelf as it is, without the plaster frieze. Maybe make one or two pieces but leave room for a mix of other things. Very inspiring, I'd love to see more of your home

Yes actually "building!" The thing is, unless you or a family member who doesn't mind can do this, the cost for that build would be beyond most people's budgets.

Fascinating. To take something ordinary and make it special is so much fun, and to work with what you have rather than ripping it apart - love it.

"Excuse me, where's the bathroom?" "Through the library" Oh I love this so much. You did such a beautiful job! I loved your original idea for above the shelving but I really like what you've done with it by putting all the interesting collections you have. Perhaps you can make a little book nook out of your original plan and put it on one of those shelves.

When you talked about limiting construction waste, it made my heart smile. Three mornings a week I help remove trash at illegal dumpsites across my county, so much of it is discarded building materials! keep up with the videos. Craftmanship is disappearing. these videos are inspiring to the younger generation. Videos such as these have helped my grand daughter decide she would like a career in woodworking, restoration construction and design.

The barrel ceiling would be awesome. I would keep the old library plaster forms, finish them, and have an occasional one on a shelf here and there. Miniatures can be very fascinating and captivating. I am looking forward to see how everything develops. 😊

I think that room was originally intended as a dressing room. Your makeover is inspiring.

Your library reminds me of the cabinet of wonders in the novel “Wonderstruck”. Quirky and so fascinating! I think it will change organically over time with new treasures and books. What keeps me coming back to your channel is your ability to create and elevate using many found and repurposed pieces. In my home I take pride in using things that have been handed down to me because I love the sense of history and the stories each piece tells over time. Other pieces I have are from thrift shops, flea markets, and estate sales. These are my favorites!

I would absolutely love to see videos about the other spaces in your house, this room turned out very beautiful and I'm curious about what else you have done!

As a rabid bibliophile with hundreds and hundreds of non fiction books, I was delighted when your KZread channel with Extreme Room Makeover - My closet is now a library!, popped up in my feed today. You are a kindred spirit in so many ways. Have spent time looking at your channel. Really liked your 9 GARDENING HACKS That Actually Work. In winter here in the California SIerra we cover all our fall/winter vegetables (rutabaga, turnip, parsnips, carrots, leeks, kale, spinach, cabbages) with three feet of straw, which acts to insulate and keep them from freezing, while allowing us to harvest. In fall when our heirloom tomatoes die back, we gently lay the plants over onto the soil and cover with straw and compost. Come spring they send up new growth, stronger plants. This saves us money and produces more heirloom tomato plants which we share with family, friends.

I was mildly disappointed it wasn't a gardening video but not for long, this was amazing! You definitely need to do the barrel ceiling. I prefer your bits and bobs to the frieze. I would definitely look forward to another house video. Your style is so unique.

As much as I love garden videos, when fall/winter rolls around, I'm ready for beautifying my home. To me a library can't be best. I'm a book lover & I can never have enough bookcases! When I was young, growing up in my parents' house I remember always dreaming about how I wanted to make an old-fashioned library room in my own house one day. Yours is divine! I would encourage a curved or vaulted ceiling at some point in the future if you feel accomplished enough in your design skills to pull it off. Even though the room is small, It would be awesome! Even adding some painted frescos on the ceiling would make it exceptional - not necessarily trying do a miniature replica of a chapel, but to add a bookish, knowledge and learning atmosphere.

This brought up childhood memories of the room I would slip into to explore when I was really young - my deceased grandmother's turn of the century "closet" room that held a lot of her intriguing art supplies and collected materials and objects. She passed 2 wks. before I was born, and I've always felt that I was gifted with her instincts and artistic way of looking at making things beautiful-or making beautiful things (!). This room which my grandfather & dad called "the hellhole" was a long narrow space on the side of the home, adjacent to the recessed entry door, with tall, curved glass windows in the Victorian style. I have strong sense memories of the light, smell and feel of that somewhat cluttered space. Your new Old Academia library brought me back to this life experience as I watched your thoughtfully designed and carefully constructed project this morning! Thanks, and it would be a pleasure to see more antique interior restoration on your garden-centric channel.

The reason I love homesteading renovations over classic home improvement shows is the lessened focus on the resale value of the property. This video got recommended to me and I’m glad it did! I’m always looking for others who also have an interest in restoring old gems like this. I liked your explanation along with the behind the scenes of your process. I love the genius designs and care for detail in homes when it comes to past generations. I’m happy to see in recent years, an increase in buying old homes and restoring them to their former glory, instead of tearing down and renovating. I would love to see more videos like this one!!!

Love the barrel ceiling idea! My mind went there immediately when I asked myself, "What would make that the coolest room ever?" And you made my jaw drop with the freeze design! I was in residential renovations/ remodels for 13 years specializing in projects like this and historic homes; in that time, I did 1 large-scale 4, barrel intersecting (cross-shaped) ceiling, which was one of my absolute favorite jobs. Challenging, yes, but there are many tricks that can simplify the build big time! Look at how skateboarders build a "mini ramp" and do the same thing but upside down. Plywood arches with 2x2 ribs and thin, flexible sheet material built in sections for manageable assembly. I do not recommend 1/4" drywall (which we used). It works, but it was a nightmare! Love the video and your design!

You're doing a perfect job spreading your energy around the inside and out. Call it a phase 1. That's what I do. I have 7 airbnbs and a flower farm. You can't do everything !

Two things: the window at night is like a black negative, I think a red blind or woven tapestry like fabric in a Roman shade, would add warmth and be less jarring to the space. Two: I think that the curtains to the closet are fabulous because they create an air of mystery as to what they might be hiding. Your bookshelves are a masterpiece of elegance and thrift. The dictionary wallpaper adds just the right touch of whimsy. The selection and arrangement of the “bits and bobs”? C’est Magnifique!👏👏👏👏

I've never come across your channel before, but this was recommended to me and I'm so glad it was! I absolutely adored this video and the vibes of your library. It really reminds me of my favourite spaces in Oxford - not just the libraries, which were obviously gorgeous, but especially all the different studies of my history professors. They were always bursting with books and fascinating antiques and curiosities they'd collected over decades. The furniture was always slightly dilapidated but gorgeous, the colour palettes were usually warm and autumnal, and they were always like beautiful little jewel boxes, just intoxicatingly lovely. It was sometimes hard to focus on my tutorials because I'd get so distracted looking at the pretty things! Anyway, your library hits all the sweet spots and I love it. I think the barrel ceiling would be very cool. And you have a new subscriber:)

I'd love to see more interior design/transformation videos like this. I think the plaster broken library and barrel ceiling might make the room feel overwhelming. With the large collection of books and objects, I think the room has a good balance between large collection and not appearing too busy, but I think adding a big feature like that would be competing too much for people's attention.

@@suburbanhomestead At first I wanted you to put up a barrel ceiling, but in the end I prefer the bits and bobs. It adds interest and draws the eye upward. Keep the barrel ceiling idea for a larger room in the future. As for the floor I really think a muted painted canvas floor is the way to go. Please seriously consider doing this. ( : I would love to see this in this room in the future. It would be a good move to prevent carpet dust mites that might aggravate your asthma. This is the first time I ever saw any of your videos. You are definitely a very creative person. I appreciate you taking us thru the step by step process in the creation of the library.

Siloé, what a stunning video! Another subscriber recently mentioned a great idea of concentrating the interior design videos during the wintertime and then going back to the garden in the spring, summer, and fall! You can always give us sneak peeks of your home when you craft your gardening presentations. Absolutely amazed! Your time, your delicate and well thought-out design have paid off in a way that I've not seen in a very long time. I know I'm late to this, but...do the arched ceiling with moldings, that will be stunning. I love the idea of the library ruins frieze, but it will be pretty tricky to clean/dust, so just keep that in mind.

You can’t just show a six second clip of a hand painted tapestry and not expect me to beg to see the whole thing! I have LOVed getting this inside glimpse at how to create a library that I thought was only possible in my dreams.

I think the light coloured shelves really work. The space looks cosy but also fresh. I can imagine in the Summer it has a beachy vibe.

Barrel ceiling, absolutely! Plaster frieze, good God no. Shirtless suspender painting outfit, never again. Home library, sublime!

Beautiful! But, OMG, that canvas rug!! I am going to look for a video on that, next. That's a masterpiece!

Amazing! What a clever way to convert an awkward space into a jewel box. I vote for more interior content.

I would certainly like to see more videos like these on your channel. The times you show the inside of your house have illustrated how purposeful and creative you are inside, just as you are outside. I too have an older home (1920s) and work to create it a unique space. This video gave me a ton of new ideas for parts of my house.

More interior videos, please. Your creative style is inspiring.

I'm back to rewatch, as I just love your library of curiosities 😊 That, and the small glimpses, of the other rooms in your house, makes me want a full house tour, room by room, to see what else, you have come up with😊 You have a very different approach, and a very good eye for possibilities. Like with the old garden shed. Most people would have thought nothing of tearing that down - but you created a unique garden feature instead! It is a yes to a barrel ceiling invthe library, and a huge yes to more videos about the interior of your house!

It means a lot to know you have chosen to watch again. That is the highest compliment I could get. I do plan on doing room by room videos of renovation, but since I can only do these videos on my free time, and I want to only publish high quality videos, it will take a while to do that, besides all the gardening that needs to be done.

I would most definitely revisit the barrel ceiling idea later on when you have time. I think that would give so much more character to your home library. I absolutely loved this video!! You did an amazing job. Such inspirational work.

I think that is the most sensible way of tackling it. I probably have to first focus and everything else in the house, since it seems to be OK at this point as it is, but as you can gather, I am tempted to embark on a project with lots of intricate elements.

Sheesh! What can I say? The library is stunning and your home is beautiful. You really are gifted.

Perhaps that closet room was designed as a nursery/baby room off of the master bedroom. In my opinion, the proximity to the room and the bathroom would make it ideal for a new baby.

Thank you for sharing your creative process with the world. There’s an underlying philosophy of intentionality and thoughtfulness that comes out in your work and projects. Without communicating it explicitly, you inspire an almost meditative approach to simple authentic living ; whether it be your gardening, cooking, decorating, painting, your style, and even your online shop The room itself is an ingenious prelude to that fern wonderland of a bathroom. Can’t wait till they find you on Architectural Digest…. If you decide not to use the collapsing books, maybe you could sell them as bookends or something similar for book lovers.. seems like a great room for inspired original conversations. Exploring the interior is a perfect compliment to gardening especially in these colder months. Amazing work!!!

You are a genius I had not thought about creating book ends with them. I’d have to see if they would be perhaps too heavy for shipping and fragile but it’s still a nice idea. I’m glad you pick up on some of the ethics of creating with a light footprint and intentionality I think the human spirit suffers if creativity is not seen as essential.

I live in a house of similar age so I love your design. I just started a library makeover to be ready for Christmas, now I will have to push a little harder as you have inspired me. Happy Holidays.

You've done a really lovely job creating a library out of an awkward room.

I vote “yes” to barrel vaulted ceiling. And “no” to elaborate frieze of plaster ruins [unless it’s likely to give you an inordinate sense of enjoyment and accomplishment] because I think it runs the risk of feeling overdone. And definite “yes” to painted canvas rug! It’s all super cool!

I loved seeing this video! Too many people go about making older homes, with all the character and flaws, into modern interiors, and you loss the sense of time to them. You’ve made that space fit the older portions by paying homage to the era it was built. Each of your videos really showcases your understanding to artistry. Gardening, decorating, building, painting, it is all about your vision of the world around you! So most certainly keep making videos about all of them!

A "lair", why not? As an Architect, your solution to a bad design solution into some more practical than other solutions is a solution that embraces the best of "if we could, what would we do?". Kudos I s to you

Hay, as an Architect, I look at your creations as "accidental architecture"; this is my highest accolade Ican award to anyone; whetherthey are professional designersor mere "amateurs", non-architects achieving a level of design eurythmic delight need to be celebrated. Your designs, whether they contribute to your built environment or your garden fabric...provides a framework that you can evolve your garden... I am fascinated that you explore alternatives, things that you don't I intally respond to. Thank you
