In Makassar this welcoming ceremony called "angngaru" (vow), Angngaru used to present to the king by His knight. the knight is committed to protect the king with all his life, hence the one who read this vow / presenting the ceremony in front the king is showing his ability (invulnerable) by stabbing and cut their body. However, as the time changed.. this ceremony no longer for the King only but also could be presented to the special guest who visit this city.

I'm makassar people let me explain a little about the welcoming ceremony, it was a vow / oath of warriors and knights in ancient times, that is why it looks a little scary and because now it is no longer the heroic era as before, then the pledge was a spectacle and made a welcome event. you're welcome🙂

@Joe amkevi I hope so, there is a lot of discrimination against christians and Chinese there. There are large pockets of extremism there. We went to a Batak restaurant and ate some Babi and the woman owning the store said she has had her shop fire bombed several times. We were drinking beers in a Chinese restaurant and people were spitting at us as they walked past. Its not acceptable in 2020.

Makassar is in the middle of indonesia located in Sulawesi Island. I can guarantee real Makassar foods are 100% halal. There are non muslims but it's not a big deal. Muslims and non muslims live with tolerance and harmony.

same here in Malaysia. soy sauce is kicap and tomato sauce is sos tomato. there are hilarious occasion when westerners ordered tomato ketchup in restaurant and were given a plate of sliced tomato and a bottle of soy sauce.

FYI: the origin of ketchup came from sambal Indonesia ( 2 main ingredient for sambal are 🌶 and tomato 🍅 crushed together.) The Dutch took it back but left the 🌶 out. And than they messed up the name where ketjap in Indonesia is actually soy sauce. So much for the Dutch for being in Indonesia for 350 years 🤪

kecap itu asalnya dari kedelai dan ampasnya itu namanya tauco ini awalnya datang dari Cina pada jaman dahulu kala , karena semua makanan yg pakai nama tau seperti tauco , tauhu , tauge , touzak semula berasal dari China
