Extreme fast MFT portrait lens, Canon FD 85mm 1.2L & Olympus OM-D E-M1X ! - RED35 Review
One of Jimmy's most treasured lenses, the Canon FD 85mm 1.2L, a legendary portrait lens back in the 80's. Since arrival of mirrorless cameras, it's possible to resurrect these old vintage lenses and re-use them on modern digital cameras. How does it hold up in today's digital world? Jimmy took the lens out from his bomb-proof safe and mount it on his workhorse Olympus OM-D E-M1X and test shots with our beautiful Zoha (yes, you guys made her come back after so many "I love Zoha" in the previous video). #microfourthirds #olympus #photography

it would be good if you showed the pictures for a few seconds after the parts where you shoot the model.
Zoha , its just so nice, the atmosphere of the video with you in it. Looking forward to many more.
Yeayy!!! This was my request, using old lenses on mft bodies 😍. Thanks for listening to my request. Can't wait for another lenses 😍
Fantastic video, you two made my day. Love your styles.
Nice video, as always. I love my old FD lenses. Fun to take out once in awhile for a different look.

Thanks John! Yes, these old FD lenses are great!
Amazing images especially on the bike. Great team!
Still loving Zoha ... I hope she will be back for more Thanks for this great, informative and entertaining video. I already tried some old lenses of my Minolta using an adapter (with good results) and now definitly will try with the lenses of my Daddy's old Canon. Very well done. *double thumbs up*
I love Zoha! Wait, what-we aren’t doing that like last time? It’s worth a shot!
That lens and a shootout of the latest om-d em's. With Zoha, of course.
This channel deserves at least 100x the subscribers!
Keep Zoha coming back, and do more reviews of other old Olympus 4/3s lenses. I have seen the 35-100mm.
I bought mine back in 84 and used it with a Canon F1 AEn body for concert photography and today it works just fine on my GH5 with a Metabones. I shall never sell mine either! 😀🙏🏾
As an old Nikon user, I still have all of those manual lenses I had before. For 85 mm I have to golden glasses. The Mitakon 85/1.2 . Pin sharp wide open, and Nikkor 85/1.4 AIS. Stop it down to 2.8, and it's shines, better than everything else. I used them with Metabones Speedbooster and it gives med 0.9/1.0/60 mm with mFT.
such a chilled out review, and Zoha is cool as, a model interested in the process unlike some models just looking mundane when the photographer talks about specs!
It is fantastic to see both of you doing this very nice job together. By the way, yes I love Zoha! I saw first the KamLam 50mm F1.0 video... I need to say that I am impress with both lenses, but this Canon FD L model is an incredible good portrait one. Canon also have another very good portrait lens, the EF 135mm Soft Focus. For me is very good to use vintage lenses on my modern digital cameras. Buen trabajo y en verdad Zoha es adorable.
Love this format! There are surely a lot more fast lenses to be tested - naturally with Zoha :)

hahah yes, from cheap to expensive! Stay tuned.
Wow. The lens is indeed beautiful. Thank you for this awesome video. And I'm loving the editing you did on the photos. Perhaps you teach us how you edit the photos from this episode? Looking forward to watch that one.
I got some good shots with a Canon FD 70-150 f/4.5 on my original E-M5 years back. I was quite impressed. I haven't used that lens much since. I'll be coming out to London for a month in April 2020 with my E-M5 MkIII. I'm thinking I may bring the 14-150 f/4-5.6 as a 'walking around' lens, and pick up a 17mm f/1.8 for a fast/indoor lens. I love my 12-40 f/2.8, but it does have a bit limited reach for a travel lens.
Excellent video !!!!!!!!!!!
Great video, Jimmy! I'd love to see you take on one of the entry level models-- the OM-D E-M10 Mark III, for instance? Maybe some other more general tips--photo taking etiquette around town, keeping the lens clean, and so forth. Thanks! :) And maybe a Zoha and Charli collab? :D
When I first saw these.photos I hadn't watched this video yet! I'm so excited now that I see what lens you have and I have an answer to my curiosity about how you got the bokeh with your MFT gear. I've been shooting some film lately with my Dad's Canon AE-1 Program that he handed down to me this year. I'm just shooting with a 50 1.8 and getting some amazing portraits. Now I need to find this lens!! Ahhhhhh Zoha. You made these images perfect.
Nice review and lens, i got recently 100m f2 Zuiko lens and I think that one is a keeper as well. Keep up the good jo. 👌🏻
I''d love to see you do a video like this with the vintage Olympus-Zuiko 50mm f/1.2, which is a stunning lens and has the same cache and following. Of course - Zoha is mandatory as the model... ;)
Zoha is Gorgeous!! So is the Canon 85mm L
Jimmy, Jimmy, another fantastic video, thanks. Zoha, Wow, she adds that special content attraction. Well done. You may want to be around St Peters Street 7th Dec 19.00

Crazy fun! Thanks very much for the great video. Now there is a dilemma. I have never really considered legacy lenses adapted to the MFT system before. I foresee a future of much web searching.
I love Zoha and you. Both of you make an awesome 👌 couple 💑 to do videos. Great chemistry between both of you.
I have a few Nikon lenses that I've owned since becoming a pro in 1973, and they're an absolute joy to use with my modern Lumix (sorry) camera bodies. With focus peaking and stunning IBIS the old lenses are almost as quick to use as modern AF, so what more could I want? I also bought a Kamlan 50mm f/1.1 after watching your video, by the way, so thanks for that!
Aww Zoha is so cute
We need more Zohas reviews.
Thank you for another fun video, Jimmy. You and Zoha have nice on-screen chemistry. Please try the lens out with a speed booster rather than just a straight-through adapter. That way you should theoretically see the originally intended field of view and not have to stand so far away from your subject. I'm interested to find out your experience of handling the lens in that circumstance. Also, what might be possible using this lens with a tilt-shift adapter? Keep up the good work.
@Red35Photography

Thanks James! At some point, I will try the speed booster but it's extremely expensive in UK and as I don't really use them for work, I can't justify the expense (my wife will kill me!).
Nice video! :)
zoha is gorgeous !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have given up shooting older lenses on my Pen F. So soft
What is the difference between taking internal and external video.
Nice photos. I wonder if it's worth using this over the Oly 75/1.8?
@Red35Photography
4 жыл бұрын
That's debatable because one has AF and one doesn't. Also, one is more modern and ultra sharp at 1.8, the other has a more vintage look. I have both, so depends on what I want to shoot.
If you used off flash or strobe to fill a little light on subject, it would produce fantastic outcomes. Anyway, I like a sentence of "I'm a chosen one". Hahaha, it sounds familiar.
With these manual lenses, does the electronic range finder in the camera still work? As always, Zohar is mandatory.
is this lens better than the m zuiko 45mm 1.2 pro?
FF eq. 170mm... now that's tight
She's dope asf for these videos. You guys work well together. I wonder if she will pursue photography
They made those adapter little shorter to make sure thay can focus to infinity , not longer. They screwup distance scale too So , dont trust zone focus , dof caculator...crap you read when using those adapter Nice video , as usual
Definitely looking forward to more videos like this one. Part of the reason I switched to mft is being able to adapt old lenses onto the body. I really like the characteristics of the images produced by these old lenses. Somehow it feels more... "organic"? The only downside to adapting old lenses is that it's manual focus only. Which actually suits my shooting style just fine. ^_^ Personally I've tried adapting the ef 50mm f1.8 lens on my em5mk2 and gotten some of my best images so far. Maybe perhaps if you can show the outcome of the pictures right after you take them? So we can kinda get a context of what we're seeing you shoot vs the resulting image. Really love the chemistry you have with all the models you've worked with on this channel, so yeah, would definitely want to see more!

Cheers mate. Points noted. Yes, we will have a lot more in the future for sure.
Don't mind the glow, sometimes I quite like it, but most of those old lenses become quite unusable when you use them with the speedbooster wide open. So, if you want maximum sharpness from your vintage lens shot at wide open aperture, use simple adapter without glass elements...
I need to get and adaptor for old canon gear! Zola is a great addition, makes jimmy look like he’s a real pro. Lol

Let's do more review. It doesn't matter what you review, camera, lens, your gloves or jackets, as long as Zoha is in the video.
Great video Jimmy! I have a question since I am OMD shooter and thinking of buying vintage. Does focus peaking work in this setup, or we just rely on our screen/eye combo?
@Red35Photography
4 жыл бұрын
Thanks George. Focus Peaking works for most cases. But for portraits, I love critical focus so I use magnify. I customise one of the front buttons to be magnify so I can check it quickly. It's pretty quick action one you get use to it. Almost like double tap. Then I can also use the screen to move the 'mag' screen box around with the D-Pad or joystick.

@@Red35Photography thank you so much! A great idea on my opinion, is to make a video about this. Vintage lenses are coming back with the "rise" of the mirroless. Marking use of them and pointing that OMD system is ideal for them is a nice idea. Show us how it's done and probably more might jump onto Olympus ship. Thank you again! Cheers

@@ToKanaliMou Not just "vintage" but plenty of new "cheap" fast manual lenses to play with. Also remember to disable the view boost in M mode (another annoying Olympus default setting) .. I also setup 2 buttons, one for magnification and another for peaking so I can just toggle the mode that is best for the situation. As Red says you can move the mag. around so for portrait (for example) it is the same flow as with an autofocus lens: frame your shot, put the focus point on the subject then magnify and focus. You can also use sequential shooting when using a fast aperture to mitigate slight movements or kinda do focus braketting by slightly leaning forward while burst shooting.

Got memorable experience about focus peaking. 😉. Back in early 2019, the focus was stop peaking when I use one of this old. And after swithing lens switching cameras, I realized that the focus will only "peak" if your lens can be focused enough. In other words, if your lens focus isn't good enough then the camera system won't give you the "peaking visual" in LCD.
Just discovered your channel love that you review old and new lenses,oh and Zoha is hot ;)

Nice lens! How come for virtually every vertical shot, you tilted the camera right and used the primary shutter, instead of tilting it left and use the vertical grip? A force of habit, or do you dislike using the vertical grip? Edit: I managed to mix up left and right - oops....
@Red35Photography
4 жыл бұрын
LOL, no, I didn't dislike the vertical grip. I forgot to customise the vertical button for magnify so I had to use the other button which can only be accessed via horizontal position, that's all.
It’s a long video... I didn’t see how exposure should be set on the camera body and on the lens. Say you set the lens to f5, what is the settings on the EM1? Maybe I missed it...
For me the very visible chromatic aberration (green in the background and purple in the foreground) are just too much, ruin the colors. It was in the 80th a very good lens but the manual Leicas, especially the APO versions from the 90th are much better. I would go for a cheap Mitakon Speedmaster 85mm f/1.2 or 50mm f/0.95, looks like much more fun to me.
Zoha is such a distraction - what was it you were reviewing in this video? Oh, a legacy Canon lens. Really interesting - I must watch it again. Reviews of other legacy lenses for use with MFT would be very welcome - especially if they feature Zoha.
For 90% of the performance at a vastly lower cost try the Canon 85 1.8 eos or even the older FD 85.1.8. Just watch out for CA which all of the Canon 85's suffer from. 😎😎😎 This is easy to remove in post.

Why not try a focal reducer with this lens? Not the whole review, but at least a part of it.
@Red35Photography
4 жыл бұрын
Well, focal reducer is ok but to get a good one, you need to pay, also, to see how this lens render, it's best to use it bare. Any focal 'changer' adds a layer of element in between which often degrades the quality.
@sol-angelmora6415
4 жыл бұрын
@@Red35Photography That is true about adding another glass element, potentially degrading image quality. However using a full frame lens on a M43 sensor, you are only using the centre of the image circle of the lens. (edit: ~25%) of the actual image circle. In contrast, using a focal reducer would let you capture more of the image circle. Perhaps this would increase perceived sharpness/detail and overcome the fact that you are adding another glass element.

@@sol-angelmora6415 BUT - the optical quality of every lens degrades according to the distance of the center. So without a "focal reducer" you will use the best part of the lens.

Tomer Weiss The optics don’t change, other than cropping more into the image circle. And differences in post processing or in-camera rendering if working with JPGs (which is something both Olympus and Canon do extremely well). There won’t be a dramatic difference.

I do not Love Zoha, but she is all right 😋
Pffft you child, I was born in 1951 before my father's Leica IIIg was made he he. Lots of great stuff in this video. Of course you know I love classic film primes because they are fully corrected and have amazing characters. No way am I ever selling my Nikkor 24mm f2.8, 35mm f2, 50mm f1.8 and 85mm f1.8 and they work amazingly well on my modern bodies with adaptors (as wellas on my back breakingly amazing Nikon D700 which I think, with the D3, were the heaviest 35mm cameras ever made; they were the same camera just with a battery grip built in or as an accessory). So I have been wrestling with this problem all night, yawn (and really for the last few years); why do modern lenses suck? For a start they are uncorrected and much of what you see is due to the processor rather than the glass. It started yesterday morning; I was bored. Very bored as the rain was lashing down. Well when I bought a Leica TL2 last year I threw my old Leica T in a bin in the car port. The performance wasnt great,slow focus, poor exposure control and heavy noise and chroma by ISO1600. Hence I bought theTL2. Whereas I loved the Leica T, I progressively started to hate the TL2; the interface sucked and kept locking up, focus was still rubbish and I lost more shots than I took. In the end I sold the lot and bought a Sony A7 body with cashback to take my adapted lenses. So I was bored and I dug that old Leica T out of the bin. The sensor was badly contaminated and I had never been able to clean it, soit was in a bin, so I had nothing to lose. I used detergent solvents, scrubbed withy all sorts of stuff and suddenly the mess shifted. I cleaned the inside out, used a sensor cleaner to remove solvents and charged the battery. I put on a Voightlander 28mm f2 Ultron-M and my goodness the images were good. The old magic started to flood back and I started to love this old camera again. I bought a nice new black rope strap from amazon. So then the questions started;why did I so hate the TL2 (its got the same body but much better internals) but more importantly; why did I hate the 23mm f2 Summicron-TL. Clearly the 23mm Cron was technically the best lens I ever bought; far superior to the 23mm f1.7 Summilux on my Leica X113 (my favourite camera of all time). I have a photo of the City from the South Bank that proves it, the image detail is stunning. So I looked through my folders. There is no doubt at all, the best images were taken with the X113 by a mile, the Leica T with the 18-55mm, Voightlander 28mm f2 and with the Nikkor 35mm f2 come next and are all amazing images. I have no TL2 with 23mm f2 images that are great;absolutely none at all; they are dead. So what is the answer. my guess is that technically perfect modern lenses record the appearance of things and the image is relatively dead, classic lenses record the essence and soul of a scene. The effect is impossible to tie down and define but you see it in the images; classic lenses give a look that draws you in and involves you, they have a human element. Modern lenses have had teh life and soul processed out of them.Its been a productive weekend and I am loving my Leica T again - have fun - winks ;-)

I knew you would like film lenses! I have more but need time to 'dig' them out especially they are now scattered in different boxes! It will take me a while to find them. Modern lenses have some good ones, I do particularly like Olympus' top end glass, still maintain a certain degree of 'organic' look to it, unlike Canikon lenses. I am, however, curious about the new Canon 85mm 1.2 L RF on the new camera as I have owned all the versions (sold all and only keeping the FD) so I may give it a go to see.... I am a sucker for this Canon 85mm.... strange.
