Extreme Detail in a Scale Replica Tells a Race Car's Story

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Doug gives us a tour of his Warren Hanson's Double Zero model, as it raced at the Danbury Racearena in the early 60s. Full of surprising details, see how he honored the driver, mechanics, and the Marcus Dairy, created working steering in scale, and achieved the look of hand painted lettering. 1997 winner of NNL East's People's Choice, and MassCar Model Car Exhibition's Best Scratchbuilt, Best Oval Track, and Best in Show.

Doug, What an absolutely beautiful vintage modified! (Reminds me of Auggie's work.) I remember the magazine article, being stunned by the detail work on this car. (Then hearing about building it twice, at different times is pretty amazing in itself!) I love when you review your own work, you are just really humble about it even though you've attained the top spot many times. There is absolutely no air of superiority in your voice or the words to describe it. It's just a hobby. We build replicas for the love of all things automotive, not specifically to compete in "the Big Show". Competing against our modeling peers isn't the real reason why most of us build, shows are fun, the comradery is better, winning is great, but it's not the reason we built it in the first place!

I am a model builder. Mostly race cars(Dirt & Asphalt)but I do build street cars & trucks too! So I REALLY do appreciate these kinds of videos. We used the big Chrysler six in several modified racers back in the day and it was great to see one in such a fine model. I have been involved in building and racing slot cars for fifty years and racing real cars for about forty. This particular model has been an inspiration for many of my "hardbody" slot car builds ever since I first saw it on the cover of one of the model magazines. It is always a joy to look at, thanks for letting us see it again.

I was greatly appreciative when you included Early Racing Classics in playing a small part in this build. I had seen some of your builds in magazine contests and was blown away by the skill and detail you achieved. What surprised me the most was finding out that we grew up in the same town and both were able to enjoy going to the Racearena Saturday nights.Knowing that you are a professional photographer, I must say that I am a little disappointed that you couldn’t find a way to capture an image of the piece of used chewing gum stuck on the underside of the dashboard that you included in this build. Just because it doesn’t have Dan’s DNA doesn’t mean it’s not worth mentioning!😉

Hey Doug, fantastic video. This car is amazing! Huge inspiration for me. You mentioned machining the brass radiator, the pulleys, and the battery caps. What's the process for this? Are there specific tools for scale machining or are you using full sized stuff? I've wanted to get into scale machining for awhile to learn a new skill, but I don't have any clue of where to start, what equipment is used, where to look for information, scale machining communities or companies, etc, etc. If you could point me in the right direction (or any direction) on where to find some of this info, it'd be greatly appreciated.
