Extreme Cold Weather Tactical Scope FREEZE TEST (-34 deg F) ~ Rex Reviews
Комедия
What scopes works best in the winter? Athlon Cronus BTR, US Optics ST-10, Valdada Recon G2, Athlon Midas TAC, SWFA SS10X, Primary Arms 6-30 platinum. Which scopes work in -30 deg F (less than -60 deg F with windchill). Enjoy!

Safe to say batteries in laser range finders and Kestrels would be toast as well! Having a ballistic reticle like ACSS HUD or the Athena BPR grid is a must to avoid turret adjustments. Another key thing is what Rex has preached for years and that is having data or Dope cards😉 -Dimitri

Good additional information on the batteries in other equipment too. Valuable advice sirSir! Blessed days sirSir, Crawford out

I would have been surprised if the batteries worked. Good advice about picking a setting you anticipate using before it freezes up. I'm all for the acss reticle Dimitri!

Generally is ok if you're running good litiums. But true some electronics start to glitch when its that cold.

Your ACSS HUD would be ideal in this case for sure.

...and that's why I own one of your 4-14×44 acss hud scopes. Rex is an outstanding ambassador of your products (as he is of others) , honest and true .
Rex.... minus 30F....!....that is insane. But someone needs to run this test for us and I am glad it is you and not me. Power on my friend.
Thanks again for all the fine instruction videos. That's a very good point: to dial the turrets to a good place when you put the rifle away.
SWFA SS scopes are my favorite. The quality you get for the price, plus the lifetime warranty, made in Japan, just can't beat them.
Thanks Rex for helping us out...doc David
Living in another cold state I was happy to see your test results. Made me feel even better about having just picked up a Midas Tac. Thanks Brother!!
I have grown to really love you Rex , you have educated me, motivated and inspired me in many ways, I'm not sure how many vids you have made but I intend on watching every one of them , thank you very much .
I usually dont go out to shoot at these temperature but, I am a happy man now, I just bought an Athlon midas tac yesterday. My go to scope under minus 5 is a Vortex crossfire 2 3-9x50! No parallax, turret kind of work better and I just dont have to take care of it! Thanks for the test.
Very, very "cool" video. I am so glad I found this video, I have numerous problems with the cold (I live in northern Montana) and it seems as though almost everything starts failing at negative 15, along with my scopes, now I know what to look for. Thank you!
Looks like the solution would be leave on the best power (or use a fixed power scope), have a christmas tree reticle for holdovers, use eye position and the eyepiece "dark ring" to eliminate the need for parallax adjustment. A very revealing demonstration. Thanks for doing it.
Another excellent video. TY
Great Information. Thanks for the video Rex. Athlon and Primary Arms are companies I've purchased from before (lower end products) due to budget constraints and what they provide. I think I'll continue to give both a look when I make a 'step-up' in optics quality. There's usually no polar vertices in SE Texas but if one does occur, I now know how to be setup for it.
Polar vortex scope test! Better than home freezer!
Fascinating
Thank you for the freeze test, that had some surprising results. Also if I may...can you have someone do your video work for you when you are demonstrating equipment. I'm not being a hater, I've followed you for a few years now. Products always drift out of frame or seem to forget where frame is. Love your show and content. God bless.
Cool-pun intended-video brother! Next range session, I'll set my parallax at 250 while I'm engaging targets at 500 to see how I fare. I'm fairly sure it's not going to get to - 20 again here, much less -34!
Had my Swfa SS on a -18 elk hunt last month and it worked great. So there's a threshold maybe
The intro song to this video is perhaps one of my favorite songs by Rex. Wished he'd occasionally upload a new song here and there.
Like your army wool glove linners. Mine have all worn out.
Handy dandy info there. Its probly the best idea to have your info etched on the ret and set reasonably befor you get into the deep freeze. Geez and people life there cuz they want to??? Lmbo lmbo Blessed days sirSir yall, Crawford out
A Polar Vortex is a great opportunity to fill in Primary Functions tables.
Rex, just curious... Why do you rarely ever speak of Leupold scopes? Specifically the Mark 4 series. Thanks for this video and all the rest. I've learned a lot from you!
So it seemed liked overall, the Midas did the best. Did everyone else see that as well?
All I'm saying -34F and my shooting addiction can wait till spring!
Do you think a pack of “warm gloves” in a scope Cover, would help.
Are you in Highland? Snowing to beat the band up here right now.
Hey Rex- Related question, the newer "Temperature Stabilized" Powders. Would make MVV functions in the Calc Forms not necessary (or would it) Surely there would still be some variation in velocity based on ambient temperature? Have not done any real tests yet but any opinion?
Hey Rex, I was hoping you still had the original IOR 4-28x50 Recon in the lineup. Had mine for just over a year and absolutely love it. How do you think it would fare at those temperatures? I think I already know...

Interested as well. I love this scope.
Damn dude. Where and how do you afford all these beautiful scopes. Man I wish I could shoot like you. I LOVE guns but don’t know how to shoot long range. ESPECIALLY as good as you.
Any plans to finish the review of the sig tango 6 ?
Hi rex I want to get into long range shooting for hunting and varmint I was wondering what would be better to learn mills or moa
Rex , you briefly mentioned S&B scopes saying that you froze those as well. What did you mean by that? Can someone help me understand this? Do they not work when frozen? Thanks ~Dave~
I see that you blessed the SWFA SS 4-15x for ELDS. The 30mm tube is aluminum, my barrel is steel. So , do I match the metal for the base and rings to the scope or the barrel? Which company/make of base and rings do you avoid and or bless? Also, I have seen Athlons (in videos) not turret tracking to 100% in accuracy, what are your thoughts?
@Freezer003
5 жыл бұрын
Generally you want to match bases to rings. Steel or aluminum, each have their qualities
Moral of the story......keep your sniper duties to 0degrees and above😁
Iron sights still work. They will only stop working when it is so cold that your eyelids freeze to your eyeballs.
Rex, other then presetting the optics in case of freeze in a SHTF moment.. any procedures to try to keep them from freezing or thawing them out? Take a leek? keep twisting the turrets on the hour? lol.. wisdom from the field of hard knocks,.,. thanks good info!

ROF! Randall C. If it's cold enough to freeze the grease in the turrets, my fingers will be too cold to be able to feel my zipper. Heck, when I went out last week when it was +5, I was dancing in the porta-potty for a minute or two, and it wasn't my "Happy Dance". ;-)

One of those nylon-ish material scope covers with the “Shake em til they bake” Hand warmer or foot warmer packets inside. Keep plenty of packets on hand. As one packet is only truly good for about 3ish hours. Even though they say “5 hours” on them usually. Or if the rifle doesn’t need to be accessible super fast you could always wear it across your chest underneath your coat and let your body heat keep it warm. However I’d recommend having a “sock” or something keeping any foreign materials out of your barrel.

@@TiborasaurusRex Any plans to do a follow-up to see if the scopes still track and the parallax still works after they were thawed out?

@@lucass4758 For the scope, or for the fingers?
Most of the equipment is beyond the price range of the working class. I am using a standard REMINGTON 700 SPS with a choate stock and reload my own ammo. 100 yards within a dime.
I see a lot of scopes with caped windage but a target turrets on elevation. Is that because they assume you dial elevation and hold off windage.
@randalloc
5 жыл бұрын
yes
@lucass4758
5 жыл бұрын
Yep. It’s easy to have a hard zero stop for your elevation turret. So if it gets spun accidentally no big deal. But accidentally spin your Windage turret and have no clue which revolution is the correct revolution then you’re screwed til you take a practice shot
If it is cold enough to freeze the mag ring the erectors are probable locked up internally. You will find out next week when none of them track properly. This is a job for dry lube cold weather proofing by a pro. Never force adjustments! They are fragile.
Off topic: Why are two of your videos from Sniper 101 now private?(#72 and #81) I am glad I took notes.
