As a former mechanic, my take on tools is this: beware of a price tag. A huge price tag migh not always mean higher quality, or at least might mean a level of quality that you don't really need. If you camp in a campground 2 times a year, you probably dont need the most high-end blade on the planet. Dont buy cheap garbage, but do your research and buy something that will get the job done for you, without overspending on something youll never use to it's fullest potential.

@@calculatedsurvival I try. I'm on a pretty limited budget (married with 4 kids), so i try to make smart choices when buying my hunting and camping gear, just like the rest of my tools. I don't need a Bergera rifle to hunt, just like I didn't need a box of snap-on tools to fix vehicles. I've really enjoyed your content, as I bet alot of people here with limited budgets do, to help me make informed decisions. Keep up the great work 🤙

@@michaeldbhawker3556 I wouldn't say that. I have had sockets from harbor freight for years that do the same as a snap on socket, for 1/4 the price. A land rover won't get you as far into the bush as a hilux. Price, nowadays, is moreso a reflection of a parent companies name than its quality in a vast majority of cases. A rifle made by Savage will outshoot a rifle made by Browning or remington, and a much lower price. People pay for "advanced" products, when things made 70 years ago do the same job, without the frills and the name plate you're paying for. Granted, you can not expect a $25 knife to hold up to a $125 knife, but I've yet to see a mainstream, semi-mass produced knife worth 250+ dollars.

The carry-ability is very important. I argue with folks all the time about big blades vs small ones and I get the same song and dance about "A big knife can do anything a small knife can but not vice versa." While true it doesn't do anyone any good if it hurts or pisses you off when you have to keep it on you for hours at a shot.

Sometimes I really feel like this whole knife scene has become a circle jerk where you collect knifes more than you use it. Who would use a 600$ knife for Bushcrafting if a 60$ does the same job. Don't get too distracted and focus on what's important.

  • @o0Hidden0o

K-Bars are made to have the shit kicked out of em while also being cheap. So the steel is a bit softer, but that makes it easy to sharpen, you’ll just have to do it more often. It’ll bend before it breaks and you’ll have a decent chance to bend it back without breaking. It’s not the best, but for its price you will have a sturdy knife for years. The biggest problem is the rat tail in the handle, and the way water WILL work itself into the leather disks that make the grip eventually.

Quite honestly I just use an old ww2 cutdown M1 bayonet, that was made into a fighting knife. It holds an edge surprisingly well and the blade is like crazy thick but not too heavy. It’s full tang but kinda skeletonized for the bayonet lug attachment part that works pretty well for storing small items. It’s got a basic leather sheath plus it was like fifteen bucks at a flea market.

A $30 knife is not going to be as good as a $100 knife. Yes, you may be on a budget so save a little longer. ESEE, Kabar's Becker series, Cold Steel, Buck, SOG, OKC, Gerber, Schrade and there are others out there. And watch His videos, he tests knives hard and is honest about them. I know it's not the most durable knife being half tang for the regular version, but everything else is pretty great. Thick enough to baton, holds its edge very well, half serrated, small enough to carry any way, very nice grip with hilt and holes to afix as a spear, hammer pommel, built in honing steel, fire steel, whistle and basic first aid and air rescue signals. Ive had mine for about 10 years and never found a reason to replace it.

Another thing to consider is what you expect to be doing with it. Using an excellent knife for the wrong task can be just as bad as using a bad knife. The other tools in your kit also matter. If you're expecting to also have a hatchet for example, it might affect what you need your knife to do. How easy it is to maintain matters too. I'm a huge proponent of straight edge blades for heavy duty work for example due to ease of sharpening, but if you're using it more for dressing or cooking than utility work, that's a job for a different profile.

What about a tracker knife? They're supposed to be the ultimate bushcraft knife.

My personal apocalypse proof knife would be the Gerber LMF Infantry 2. Solid thigh holster, built in sharpener, half serrated, lashing holes, and thicker than a bowl of oatmeal

If I may ask, what would you consider to be the "perfect" survival knife (size, shape, blade point, etc)?

For me, I like a 8-9” blade. Something that won’t come out of my hand when chopping. I LOVE 52100 (ball bearing steel.) even Devin Thomas who was just inducted into the Cutlery Hall of Fame told me that it is kind of a magic steel. I like reverse tanto, and clip point. Although, “Americanized Tanto point” makes for the deepest slashes when in a self defense situation.

Like the #2 rule of a gunfight “Have your gun on you” you should pick a knife that you will actually have on you when you need it.

Have you ever tested the Joker Nomad as a survival knife? Or any of the Joker Knives?
