I was so focused on the inlay and the extra frets that I didn't even notice they were *fanned* frets... definitely a worthy addition to a gallery show.
Your work is always amazing, but wow this video was especially incredible. I loved that opening shot so much I watched it back.

hey, thanks! I don't claim to be a videographer and don't really try to make each shot do any more than show the work, but sometimes I get creative :)
Nice one sir. Almost finished on my third bass. Pachyderm inspired 30" scale for my wife. Seriously could not have gotten there without you!

Another beautiful and unique piece of playable art. I love the inlay design! Happy holidays and thanks for sharing!
The detail level on those! Great job Tim!
I can barely play 3 riffs on my bass but there is something about the love that goes into building that fascinates me. Building my own with someone like you and your skills would be like winning a lottery!
Awesome project! Loved everything you make but these did feel special. And your final thoughts need to be shouted to the world. Great work Tim🥰
That double pickup version looks so good! A medium scale 4 (or 5 string) bass in that configuration would be something I'd be interested in owning.

I could absolutely build that for you. www.newperspectivesmusic.com
Both fantastic guitars. I dig it. Youve done it again!
The two pick up guitar is a masterpiece!!! Beautiful sound and looks.
Stuart Semple really does come out with some great stuff which always seems to have an application for whatever hobby or craft you might indulge in. This is the first time I've seen one of his products used in a guitar build though. I might have to get one of these now.
Just awesome! - something special about this design & interesting to see you putting together a 7 string incarnation in the evolution of the model. The fretboard art is absolutely phenomenal & your style as a builder is really fascinating. Plus your playing does the guitar justice 👌

Just finished the whole video,man this is way too cool!!!
Very cool as always.
Tim. Another great build.
Happy Holidays Tim! That was a very interesting guitar build. You have come a long way since I showed you the Acoustic that I built way back when. Keep up the great work and looking forward to what you have in store for us in 2022! Be well and stay safe! 👍👍🎸🎸

WOW.. really well done Tim .. Wow
The fretboard on this is just AMAZING???that fretboard on. Laura would be over the top
Wow this is the best looking guitar I've seen. Awesome work.👍 Had to click and watch right away. Design reminds me of a golden eagle. Thanks for inspiring me more in my design work 😊

cheers. I find every time design something and I'm happy with it, if I go back and tweak it some more in a few days/weeks/months I can make little changes that make it even better. It's a muscle that gets stronger the more you work it out, but it also needs to rest between sessions :)

the extra string really throws me off, even on 5 string basses.
Excellent design for the fretboard inlays.
Great work! I'd love to hear a little intro explaining some of the things youre trying to achieve with the project. Im not very familiar with guitars or guitar making so it would help me follow along and learn some things!
The fretboard looks so good. Also, I just love Black Diamond pigment. From the very little experience I have they sure make a good product.
Cool stuff!
What a beautiful pair of guitars.
Super creative!
The one that's darker in color is also darker in tone, that's like a nonverbal dad joke, I like it.
Been playing with multi colour epoxy inlay as well. Perhaps I shall try the brush method to pop the bubbles. Love your new creations Tim. Happy New Year!

So cool!
Say, great job building that electric guitar man!!😉👍
Holy cow, that solar system fretboard alone is insanely cool!!! Man, I love your work!👌🏽🤩😊

I'd love to see a sky guitar build. Those whole tones in the upper register are so interesting.
ok, what am i missing? they look similar but the dark fret boardone is so much warmer. I am positive i missed something in the build... love the soun dof them both but just a viewers perspective. beautiful work by the way.
damn those are some neat critters
Why no KZread music channel??? I love it. Very Chili Pepper / Cake ish grooves. Really good, Tim. Much love from Oklahoma.
Cool guitars
As always great work!!! Love every bit of your istruents. I wish if you could invest more time on finishing instruments lie sanding and applying finish in general it would be 10/10, now its 9/10, cheers

I'd have to charge more. I like to keep them affordable and keep moving forward and making new things, developing the craft. That last 10% feels like diminishing returns. But that's me, yknow? There are builders on all levels andd in all price ranges, enough for everyone to find who works best for them (and still avoid the factory made stuff at the box store :)
Impressive!
Another fantastic build Tim! And great playing as well. What type of tuning keys are those?

Question--on the single pickup model, what was that tonal switch you activated? It sounded like either a series/parallel toggle or a bass cut.
@timsway
2 жыл бұрын
exactly. it's a coil tap.
great job, man! i love the idea with planets and imo it looks better on the darker one, which also sounds better:) it seems that these guitars are built for hi-gain shredding, which is missing in this video.. what pickups did you use on these ones?
@timsway
2 жыл бұрын
indeed they are built for shredding, and indeed I can't. LOL! The pickups are custom wound by Gemini Pickups.
I\d love to run into Brother Tim at some musical event and shoot the bull with him about I guitar I'm planning to build, I'll bet he is a walking library of great advice on all things guitar.

Keeping the fingerboard on the CNC for the inlays is smart. Do you use a fast curing epoxy or do that over the process of several days?
@timsway
2 жыл бұрын
each sunset/sunrise in the video represents a day of waiting for things to dry and cure :) My cnc was tied up for 3 days for this inlay process.
Great film. Awesome guitars. You can never have enough strings or frets. The real question, is Pluto a planet? Mahalo for sharing! : )

Hi Tim. Been busy making some of the tools mentioned in your show and really dig using them. I don`t know ff anyone has addressed this, but I was told those aluminum rulers are not strait on the edges like a good strait edge beam. Of course, they look strait and seem true when using. What do you think? By the way. After cutting the two fret board strait edge pieces I had a leftover length 2/14 witch I am using as fret rocker. Do that album.
@timsway
2 жыл бұрын
No, they are not as precise as an expensive, machined tool, but will probably be "good enough" for most applications
Cool inlays! Could I ask what size carbon inserts you use in the neck? I want to do one with none traditional material and it’ll need reinforcing.

I used .125" (5mm) carbon fiber rods. they are usually sold as parts for model airplanes, drones, etc.

@@timsway Nice one, thanks mate.
I've had this idea for years, maybe you'd be interested (figure out a better/simpler method). You know how the 24th fret is supposed to be this ultimate tone centre for the neck pickup? Well... a pickup at the 24th fret, under the frets. I've always imagined frets on rails for this idea; extended frets 'floating' over the neck pickup. Either cleverly crafted traditional frets on wood, or frets set on a metal rail, over the pickup. Commercial guitars would never feature such a thing, but I reckon a Tim Sway guitar could/would/should?

Hey, might be a stupid question to some of you but, what is the reason for using epoxy on the ebony(?) fretboard?
@timsway

It's not ebony, it's Richlite micarta. I do not use ebony because of its nasty social and environmental baggage. I only work with local, reclaimed and sustainable materials.

I assume you're talking about all the fretless bass/slide guitar stuff in the beginning of the vid? It's a much larger convo than should be had in a video comment section, (and I don't expect to 'change your mind') but a main component of music is tension/repose, tonic/dominant, etc. This can be achieved on a micro level, too, in playing with pitch, which is why people love hearing notes bend in guitar solos. It's not where they end up that creates the emotion, it's the space in between (While My Guitar Gently Weeps). I freely admit I am no virtuoso, but when I play instruments where I have the option, if there is a space just off from "in tune" but not quite a "wrong note" I'm gonna aim for it almost every time! lol. I call it "the 13th note" - sometimes it successfully triggers the feelings I want it to hit, sometimes not. And definitely not everyone is gonna like it - it would be weird (and boring) if everyone listened to, liked and created the same music! Search for inspiration in the things you dislike as much as the things you like. There is often even more of it in there!

I get asked that a lot. Truth of the matter is I really enjoy working alone and curb my growth so I don't have to take on help. That may change someday, but then it would end up being more like "do all this stuff I don't want to do right now" rather then a true, teaching opportunity that anyone apprenticing would want and deserve.
Nice guitar! Terrible music theme!
