    For gutters usually a satin or semi gloss will do. Ben Moore has a nice DTM (Direct to Metal) paint we like which is oil based. Good luck!

    I understand you prefer to paint both trim and front door in the same sheen but IF you wanted more "pop" (as an accent on) ONLY the front door would it be OK to do high gloss - or would it "clash" with the less-shiny trim? And what do you think of using OIL-based (old style oil, not modern alkyd hybrid) on the front door (to eliminate the brush / roller marks) - I know it's a hassle and smelly etc...but maybe it could work? Your thoughts...?

  • @SuperVassarBrothers

    @SuperVassarBrothers

    There are a couple different ways to accent the front door. You can do it with a difference in sheen, but you can also do it by choosing a different color. That's quite common. A lot of folks will have the woodwork, moldings, columns and things of that nature in a white color and then they'll pick an accent color for their front door and shutters or just the front door. That being said it's also totally a personal preference if you want to go with a high-gloss on the front door. As far as using an oil-based paint, that's really down to your level of comfort using an oil-based product. They tend to be a little bit trickier to work with. Oil-based paints do tend to self-level a bit more than latex products, but you'll still see brush/roller marks. I'd still prefer Moorglo Soft Gloss from Benjamin Moore, but that's just me. Good luck!

    Great video! We are thinking about painting the whole house with just one color to make it look more modern. Would you recommend going with Low Lustre or soft gloss? The contractor is recommending soft gloss, but we think it will shine too much. Our exterior is wood siding. Thanks!

    Hi. Yes we have painted homes in satin before. It will be more durable and wipeable, but the higher sheen will show the roller lines more. We usually go with an eggshell or matte (Duration matte from Sherwin Williams is more like an eggshell). Its your choice my friend.

    What's the best sheen for inside the Garage, Eggshell or Satin?

  • @SuperVassarBrothers

    @SuperVassarBrothers

    Жыл бұрын

    We usually use a matte or eggshell finish for the inside of a garage. If it's decently insulated we treat it like any other interior room. Semi-gloss on the trim, flat on the ceiling, matte or eggshell on the walls.

    I live in a hot island (Puerto Rico), it rains a lot and all year round weather is from 78 to 100 degrees. I have always used flat, but they get too dirty easily. Do you think semi-gloss is a good option?

  • @SuperVassarBrothers

    @SuperVassarBrothers

    For interior walls eggshell and matte are popular options. In general those sheens hold up better than flat. Semi-gloss tends to be quite aggressive for interior walls. It shows a lot of defects and is not the finish most people like for interior walls. We use semi-gloss on trim and doors.

    We just painted our 100 year old cedar shake garage with BM regal select low lustre and find it too shiny. We have been told the sheen will lessen/ mellow with time. Is this true? How long will this take? We are contemplating repainting with their flat finish. What prep work would we need to do if we wish to put the flat over low lustre. Please help and thank you for your time.

  • @SuperVassarBrothers

    @SuperVassarBrothers

    The sheen will mellow with time as the surfaces are exposed to the elements. You'll likely see a difference in a few months depending on what type of weather you experience and how dirty the surface gets. If you decide to go over it with flat, then you don't need to do any additional prep. The flat will stick to the low lustre, so you'll be good to go.

    I'm not familiar with the product that you're describing. My best guess is that the product you used on the smooth walls did not get a good bond to whatever product was used on that surface previously. That surface probably needed to be primed with a bonding primer prior to painting in order for you to get good adhesion. I'm a fan of Benjamin Moore's Moorglo Soft-Gloss and Moorguard Low Lustre for exterior walls. It's a hybrid exterior paint, and tends to adhere to most surfaces.

    What sheen do you recommend for porch floors or decks? A well-known paint company recently sold me a "low sheen" porch and floor paint for my front porch. I asked for a higher sheen so that rain would roll off and it would be easier to clean, but they said it would be too slippery for a porch. After applying it I found it scratched off easily leaving the primer showing.

  • @SuperVassarBrothers

    @SuperVassarBrothers

    Hi. We don't do a lot of porch floors or decks anymore. When we do we typically use the standard porch and floor paint from Sherwin Williams which comes in one sheen (to my knowledge). Make sure all the loose paint is scraped and use a good primer on any bare wood. We find it helpful to use the primer recommended on side of the porch and floor paint which is in tiny print under the "preparation" label. Good luck!

  • @SuperVassarBrothers

    Because they also show more defects in the surface than flat, matte and eggshell. You don’t need durability on a ceiling which is why ceiling paint is flat. Extremely shiny walls usually look like crap which is why folks go with matte or eggshell.
