Extended interview: Palestinian American doctor explains why he walked out of Biden meeting

President Biden held a meeting at the White House with Arab and Muslim leaders and activists Tuesday amid ongoing criticism of his stance on the Israel-Hamas war. Dr. Thaer Ahmad, a Palestinian American emergency physician from Chicago who traveled to Gaza earlier this year, said he walked out of the event after delivering a note to Mr. Biden from an 8-year-old. "Face the Nation" moderator and CBS News chief foreign correspondent Margaret Brennan spoke with Dr. Ahmad about his decision to walk out.

@DistrustHumanz You're right. Many don't know Israel holds Palestinians hostage, in *_Administrative Detention_* (the UN says Israel does it illegally). Israel & Hamas have been stuck for decades, in a bad game of "exchange our hostages" each side took. Before Oct 7th Israel kept 2000 Palestinians hostage (which Hamas wanted freed), and now keeps 6000 in Israeli Administrative Detention - many are abused there - children, women & men. *Look it up.* Ask yourself why Israel never charges them with a crime, and never tells them, lawyers, or reporters why they're kept hostage. Hamas said their goal for Oct 7th was only to take hostages, to be exchanged, to free Palestinian hostages that Israel keeps hidden. *_Everyone should look up Israel's illegal 6000 "Administrative Detention" hostages._*

We hope very much that this senseless murdering of innocent , unarmed, helpless, starving Palestinians in Gaza by the idf will come to a final, permanent end soon. We hope too that you and all medical staff volunteering your services that come from your hearts will remain safe at all times. We want you all to be always divinely protected. You could have made the decision to stay in the "land of the free" but you choose t o return to the war zone, to that hospital (I do not remember its name at the time of this writing) to continue your sorely needed services as a doctor for all those helpless, horribly wounded patients, the seven decades downtrodden, Palestinian people. May you, all medical and other volunteers including all patients at your chosen hospital be divinely protected always. May you keep safe always. Thank you, Doctor. You're all so very brave, so very giving of yourselves, so compassionate. BN and company have a lot to learn from your selfless examples. We are grateful to you.

If Israel can't charge these children, women & men with a crime and is unable to produce ANY evidence that they did anything wrong, then why does Israel keep them hidden or in jail? -- they're really hostages. Hey man, if a country is going to call itself a democracy, a decent person has to fully acknowledge and own the burden that it comes with, and not just reap the benefits. In a democracy, out of any political system, the citizens have the most power to influence policy directly. That means they are directly responsible for their government, because they ARE the government, by definition. You can't just deflect blame on politicians (who in a democracy are a mirror into the population itself) like cowards when the chips are down. I've noticed in most modern democracies, when their country is asked to be held to account for their grave atrocities committed, the citizens scurry and hide like cockroaches and present their politicians as a sacrificial offering to purge away the blood that's on their own hands (we did this after Iraq ourselves with Bush). But on the flip side, they are so ready to criticize (and even use collective punishment) on citizens elsewhere living under brutal dictatorships. Are these cowardly, selfish people really in a place to lecture others, who have significantly less power and significantly more to lose?

Does he know what, if any, conclusions or plans were formulated by the end of the meeting? No. So, he doesn't even know if he achieved his objective by going there. Perhaps he might have learned the reasons that the President is proceeding in the manner that he is. Maybe there's a bigger picture he could have taken into consideration. So instead of staying and being a bigger person and fighting for your cause, you walked out? Hows that supposed to get anything accomplished?

@xenokitty Did you even listen to Dr. Ahmad? He went to Gaza through a medical-aid agency. When in another country, such agencies try to protect volunteers like him. When the agency's security experts saw Israel kept arresting & killing doctors, they decided it had become too dangerous. He listened and left, to stay alive. He plans to return. Maybe the agency believes it can protect him -- or maybe now he isn't afraid of being "accidentally" murdered by Israel. He's smart, brave, & compassionate. Too bad so few Jewish Israelis are like him. .

He articulated the reason why he "asked to be excused," but clearly you didn't hear him. He did it out of respect for his community and handed the President a letter of an 8 year old victim. He didn't just walk out. Don't get caught in the catchy headlines and miss the substance of his protestation.

He got several major interviews and reached millions of people more receptive than the incompetent dope in the White House, that's what.
