The fact is though, selling the rings and showing them on TikTok IS harmful, because it is persuading people to buy the rings and then they get unknowingly sucked into an MLM. There’s probably quite a young audience on TikTok too who wouldn’t even know it’s an MLM and think they can make a job out of it. But yeah, I feel sorry for all of the people who’ve gotten sucked into it and are then desperately trying to sell them. It’s not an excuse to let others fall prey to the same scheme though. Glad you exposed this!

The way this MLM works is literally like gambling, trying the slot machine again and again until you get maybe what you wanted, thats why it's so easy to be pulled int it. I don't agree with saying the ring selling/parties are harmless, thats how they get you. You can't even buy one ring bomb, you have to have the starter pack AT LEAST and they actively try to sell you more, yeah srry Alayna I don't agree that even the ring selling is harmless.

My ex got hooked into an MLM back when we were married. She couldn't understand that I had a serious issue with the idea of TRYING TO PROFIT OFF OF OUR FRIENDS. Some of the products were actually useful, and I used them myself. Doesn't mean I'm okay with selling them for double what I paid to people I worked with (and had to see five days a week), and as for people I considered friends, if they had wanted any of that stuff, I'd have sold it to them at cost. I won't say my reluctance to join in on the selling led to our divorce, but money problems absolutely did.

@@B.Harper7 Hah, exactly. I’ve had to explain to my non-American husband that, as a former Girl Scout, I am morally obliged to stop and buy at least a couple of boxes of cookies from every Scout troop I see. Doesn’t matter if we just bought them from a group tabling in another town, it is the payback I owe all of the people who bought cookies from me (and thus gave me opportunities I would have never otherwise had as a kid, like cool weeklong camping trips in the woods, or going to Disneyland!).

There is another fundamental issues with these products being a surprise, the person buying the bombs or rings not knowing what they are getting and potentially that item going to waste. We do not have endless resources for blind consumerism. While it can be fun and exciting to reveal it is a dangerous mindset to have on consumption.

So, as far as your emails are concerned, a lot of times what they do is they highly unsubscribing in a text color that matches the background so that you can’t see it so they’re hidden so that you think that there isn’t an unsubscribe link so try highlighting the email looking for hidden links. If that doesn’t work, you can always do a Google search for how to locate hidden unsubscribe links in emails but from what I’m aware especially in the US and Canada. I believe they’re required to have some kind of unsubscribe link in the email if they do it shady and hide it so that it’s there you just can’t see It.

Great points were made, and I also just wanted to add that there's harm from this kind of business in the sketchy sourcing and manufacturing. Who knows how the metals and gems were mined or how the rings were made--probably not in an ethical way for the workers or the planet. And this low-quality high-quantity collectors' business model encourages overproduction and overconsumption of these rings people might not even like, mainly just for the excitement of the fizzy reveal and the chance to collect them for collection's sake

I'm so glad you mentioned pokemon and Magic the gathering, because it seems exactly like that, but with the bad mlm element attached to it. The dopamine from opening blind "booster packs" where you get a "chance" at *maybe something good*. Even to the point of the different levels of packs, which is ridiculously expensive for some cardboard 😢 I too am stuck watching people open lots of expensive booster boxes 😂

MLM's are honestly a plague on society and I do feel sorry for the ones that truly thought they had a chance and learn the really hard way. I love the idea you had though to donate the ring proceeds to charity 💜

Also I agree with you. The actually selling of the item isn’t really that harmful. The problems arise from people recruiting and lying about their actual income and how much work you have to put it. If it’s a little fun thing somebody wants to do and they don’t care about making their money back it really is just a fun little hobby

If you want a similar type of fun that isn’t an MLM or a scam, I recommend getting candles or bathbombs from Fragrant Jewels. I’ve been ordering from them for a few months and have had such a good experience I signed up for their monthly box (first time I’ve done a box subscription). They have lots of items on sale and these end up being around the same price as full price candles and bathbombs from Target (except these have fun rings in them). 😃 They’re hand poured in Cali upon order if I remember right, so they take a couple weeks to ship, but I really love them!

This is what has been missing from all of the anti MLM content I've consumed - someone actually signing up and buying the stuff and showing you how crappy it is and also talking about why it is appealing. It's not as black and white as "it's all bad".. MLMs are definitely unethical but wanting pretty shiny things and to have fun unboxing things with other people isn't inherently unethical.. it's just a shame the only way to do it is through companies who use an unethical business model. I love the idea of you buying more of these from people who can't shift them! I know a lot of MLMs have rules where you can't sell the stock you've bought outside of the MLM model (on Craigslist or eBay etc.) but I don't think that would apply to people who have quit the MLM but still have a bunch of the stock.

I didn’t have a _good_ look at the contents of your ‘starter kit’ but I’m pretty sure if you price up 6 bath bombs, 6 paist rings, a plastic vegetable spoon & some packaging/leaflets, it doesn’t come close to what you paid for it, so you have kind of qualified yourself to be taken in by the MLM by buying it in the first place.

Were we supposed to not join the MLM or...? I don't think you were very clear on your stance. The problem people don't understand about pyramid schemes and MLMs is that you have to KEEP selling to stay on top of the fees. Sure, it feels great when you get buyers from your friends and family around you, but that well dries up quickly, especially if you roped one of them into the scheme. The founders get to reap the real benefits because they just have to resell cheap wares and collect fees from those below them. You, as a seller, can never outpace the costs. You'll eventually dry up all your clients and you'll slowly go into debt with fees and the demand to keep your wares up to date. Even the biggest sellers end up losing everything... or end up becoming their own con artist. Lastly, I don't care if the founder is queer. Fuck MLMs. They're just pyramid schemes with a new name. All they do is hurt vulnerable people.

Honestly this is so wasteful, all this shipping, packaging, products and extra things you can buy. All for these so called ugly rings that are fun to watch being revealed..? This is consumerism at its finest and it’s sad to see influencers that you think/hope are responsible not seeing the issue with buying, promoting or engaging in this kind of consumerism that is hurting our planet 🌎 I get wanting to wind down after a tough week but there is just so much better things to do to relax and have fun. But I guess in the end it’s all about wanting to create content that generates money. All these products being produced and sold are literally destroying our environment and only home :(

Hmm, I think we have to take individual responsibility as well, and saying “but I bet you fly once a year” isn’t the right attitude. MLMs and the people who promote them (knowingly or unknowingly) are doing harm on multiple levels. I think that’s okay to call out.
