Exposing Canada's 10K Open Work Permits for H1B Visa Holders | A BIG FLOP

Optimistic perspective - Someone who is fed up with lifelong green card wait on H1B visa, those people applied for these 10k work permits. There is nothing to lose as it’s just 150CAD (as you said). You are getting a 3 yr work permit for a developed nation with pathway to PR without spending thousands of dollars for masters in that country. After getting work permit , these people can decide whether to go or not. If they decide to have a stable life with lesser salary in an expensive country , they can find job in Canada from US and if they get a reasonable offer(maybe in 6months to 1year) they can move to Canada and earn points for PR by working there. So, the program is not a flop , it’s a win-win. PS - There is definitely no comparison between opportunities in US and Canada, but people who applied for this know it and still applied.

If you are so willing to work in India, why don't you give up your well paying job and move to India? i seriously don't understand the hypocrisy, US is clearly exploiting its workforce with the backlogs.. where as Canada is giving a clear-cut pathway to attract those who work there, and still you would rather encourage people to choose countries that will kick out people the first chance they get rather than educating them on a country that is equally as good. you talked about how Canada has just five major cities while the US has so many.. this stands the same for India as well... although Canada might not be as good as the US, but at least it is welcoming of every nationality alike and does not differentiate on the basis of the individuals country of birth like the US?

Very logical and to-the-point. Now I am happy that my Express Entry application for Canada got rejected. People are, in fact leaving Canada because of scarcity of jobs, high taxes, very expensive housing and other living expenses, and very less savings. The only solace is that old age is taken care of by the government, but even there the pension is just so-so. Compared to that, India offers many opportunity. However, the flip side is that life in India is quite challenging, given the situation of roads, traffic, pollution, climate, and attitude of people in general. So one has to do a trade-off between Canada, which is a developed country, and India, which is developing, but has more opportunities for work & growth.

Interesting POV. I don’t think apart from USA and India, any country is worth considering as far as opportunities are concerned. In India, infrastructure is being developed off late at a good pace wrt expressways and metros for better urban commute. The salaries have also been competitive. India of 5 years ago won’t be the same as India of today. The attitude of people will get better over time.

    A. Canadian job market is not as bad as you make it seem to be. B. you’re right you cannot compare USA to Canada, but also the population is 10 times less, so go figure. C. People with high skills driving Uber - I’ve seen people do this in NY, Chicago, LA etc. D. Having very few cities is very real. But what do i care if i have a home in one of those cities and live happily? E. Housing shortage & Cost: It definitely got way expensive. I’ve heard the case is the same in the USA. I’m not sure about it. if you want to stay in USA, continue to stay there. America is a great country, no doubt about that. People are really not “Already Struggling” in Canada hahaha.. I’ve spent 10 years in USA, got fed up and move to Canada 5 years back. Guess what, I’m now a Canadian Citizen with a great job and everything & I’ve met numerous folks that moved here from the US that love their life now. I don’t need to go stand in a line for a visa everytime I go home to visit family. From my point of view - If i spend all of my life waiting to become a citizen in a country, how do i appreciate my life and a sense of belonging anywhere at all? Again, to each their own. Do what makes you happy, but dont just stay there feeling falsely convinced that life is crap in Canada. Bottomline: Canada is not as good as America. But you also dont have to go begging for a stamp in your passport every few years. You also dont have to almost suffer a panic attack everytime you cross the border. You dont have to constantly worry about getting fired and having to leave the country. You dont have to worry about being called an outsider (within 5 years or so of arrival if you come on a PR). This guy talking here has no clue of most things he said.

Honestly, I have seen that highly skilled people working in upcoming tech are in high demand in US, even on H1b. People have been negotiating high salaries and they have multiple offers. I have seen that even many H1b have started switching jobs to get higher pay more frequently, of course not in the current economy but definitely before. What I am trying to say is that the notion of companies believing that H1b will be tied up to them has changed in recent times (before recession hit). But I totally agree about your POV on Canada. There are no jobs there and life there is far tougher than H1b life in terms of job search, expenses and taxes.

I think you don’t know the entire picture behind this. Many organizations have used this as an opportunity to send their employee to canada offices for a year and then bring them back on L-1 visa which will eventually get them GC faster. This is why 10k applications got filled so fast and this program will be successful. Companies are not moving to Canada instead many have equivalent Canadian offices (Deloitte, PwC, Amazon and many many more). Hopefully his comment is read by people watching this video to understand the other side behind this move.

Someone who has done the whole cycle US to Canada and back to US immigration, I can say that Canada is no longer a natural alternative for H1b backlogged crowd. I used to be a big proponent of move to north, I no longer encourage any one to move to Canada. Only scenario for H1b people to move to Canada, if you can move with your US job. Any one who has worked for significant time period in US, Canadian salaries just wont suffice. Even when they work in big cities like Toronto or Vancouver. I can even say to extent, it is more easy to find a job in Kansas City on H1b, than to find a job in Toronto or Vancouver on Canadian PR. I can safely say you will earn way more in Kansas City than in Toronto or Vancouver. I know the job market of Toronto, Vancouver and Kanasa City, I am speaking out of my own experience. Other thing that is dreadful is the Canadian Healthcare, to say it is awful is understatement. Two great attributes of the Canadian Healthcare is, that it is available to no one and its free.

@DesiAmericanProfessor : Thanks for me the video. I have the following questions: 1. My priority date is 2020. Going by the numbers, I assume it will take atleast 40-45 years(too aggresive) to become citizen with current rules. I am in my early 30’s, Do you think will it be feasible? 2. I am alone on work visa in my family. You can’t imagine the situation when my visa extension starts or when I get an RFE or when I go for visa stamping. Forgot going to India for family emergency when my visa extension is in progress. 3. Going by the recession trends, Assume it occurs every 10 years. I am not sure we can survive next 2-3 recessions at the age of 40’s and 50’s with visa. 4. I assume that our performance will not be same in 20’s vs 30’s vs 40’s. I dont think we can compete with younger generation. If there comes a situation where you can be easily replaced by 2 20’s MS candidates, then you will easily replaced. 5. Our health condition will not be same in 30’s and 40’s. Assume you or your family member have to be bed ridden for 2-3 months. I think I cant imagine the situation on visa. 6. Assume I have kids and they sponsor me after 21 years. I believe my health condition, visa status and performance should all be ideal even at age >50 to become citizen. what do you think? Hope you will answer for all the above points. It helps making my decision.

I felt like this video was more about USA vs CANADA. I understand pros and cons but I don't agree if things are very inferior in Canada compared to US. I am in US with my family as well. My friend moved to Canada 2 years ago and found a great job with his wife and they are very happy. He pays a lot for the rent which is true but is living a way more peaceful life there. Again I feel like everyone has their own experience. Canada's landscape allows only 5-6 major cities since the countries landscape is in the north. But I do not believe it's inferior compared to US and I belief it was a biased answer. Although I agree with the 10K Open Work Permits topic that was discussed at start. Although they might be trying out something new with few numbers and might increase the number every year if it works. I think it's in its early stages to see how it works for the first year. USA had given out only 65,000 h1b in 1990 in their first year with 20-30 major cities and increased number of slots the next year. I believe Canada is taking same measures. Also I believe due to only 5 major cities, 10,000 makes sense to start with as compared to 20-30 major cities in USA. Just my opinion!

Canadian Citizen here and agree with everything you say. Canada is a shitshow on its own - Earning 1.5 MILLION CAD IS WHAT THIS WAS ABOUT.

Bro, all those 5 cities are better than Arlington, TX! (With just one weather type and not cosmopolitan by any means)

Arlington is a part of Dallas Fort Worth metropolitan area. DFW has all four seasons, world class infrastructure and highly affordable than the cheapest of the Canadian metros.

@@DesiAmericanProfessor I have lived in Dallas area! Richardson, UTD. It’s my first hand experience! Honestly, it’s not that diverse and neither modern! Go to Toronto, Vancouver or even to smaller cities like Calgary or Ottawa, you’ll feel the difference!

yes, DFW can never beat Vancouver or Toronto's beauty. I have been to both cities. I have not been to Calgary, so I take your word for it. That said, it is much more financially easier and comfortable life in DFW. I would rather travel to Vancouver for a few days. Of course, if someone makes extremely good money, then there is no question, Vancouver is any day a great choice.

@@DesiAmericanProfessor if money is a concern there are places like Windsor and Calgary, which are cheaper! Texas is cheap for a reason, you’ll find even cheaper housing in mid west or Arizona then Texas. On each coast it is still expensive.

not just cheaper but quality of jobs here is better. Getting a job is much harder in Canadian cities. Texas is the fastest growing state now.

They made a lot more than 1.5M, because the H1B when they move there take their wealth with them, and assuming a net worth of 100k per H1B holder, they made 1billion + the 1.5M $. Cheers

No free lunches is true of all countries, not just Canada. I agree with some of your analysis but there is still a lot to cover. Everyone has a different situation so generalize it would be difficult. Canada is basically inviting less than 1% of H1B currently residing in the US. May be those 1% know what they are doing as they know their personal situations better than yourself and myself.
