Exploring WW2 tunnels and bunkers of Istanbul (Çakmak Line)
In this video, me and my friend @polovnikvozmezdiya visit abandoned fortifications of the so-called Çakmak Line - the defense line established by Turkey's Chief of the General Staff, Marshal Fevzi Çakmak, between 1936-1941 in order to deter and counter any attack by the Germans on the Eastern Thrace border. It stretched from the Sea of Marmara to the Black Sea. After Nazi Germany invaded Greece, the Çakmak Line lost its defensive function. Today, the bunkers belonging to the Çakmak Line can still be seen in Western areas of Istanbul.
Key moments:
00:00 - How to get to Çakmak Line?
04:09 - First bunker (korugan) of the line that we found
05:00 - Çakmak Tunnel
12:07 - Bunkers (korugans) of Büyükçekmece
Enjoy!

Always fascinated by fortifications of the 20th century! Hoping for more! We got lots and lots of that here in Switzerland, dating from WW 1 & 2 through the cold war. Most are securely locked despite being abandoned and some are still considered a state secret in hibernation in case it might be needed again and therefore illegal to even film from the outside. Every route that leads through a chokepoint like a gorge, a mountain pass or a road leading up to a plateau from where an invader could be pummeled with artillery, is littered with bunkers and fighting positions facing towards on short notice installable man made obstacles (mostly the classic series of tiny manholes placed in a zig-zag pattern across the road, in which massive I-beams would be vertically anchored, impossible to pull out again) where the enemy would have to stop and deal with it while being fired upon from multiple angles. Everytime I ride my bike into and through the forest hills nearby, I pass numerous such structures but cant get in, which is a shame. So, I have to make do with watching such explores on KZread. 😅
Always fascinating! And sometimes very dangerous! Thank you, Ivan!
We were in Istanbul for 3 days the end of Oct 2023. LOVED IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am surprised you could get into the bunkers, I was under the impression that your massive balls would hinder the approach. I could never muster the courage to get in such underground places in disrepair.

Me either. I am a huge chicken.
I love your videos and getting to experience all of these locations through your lens! Thanks for another great explore!
Hi. all the best & happier 2024. U rock.
Very good underground adventure, exploring underneath and bringing footage to the surface so the rest can see for ourselfs.
Love it man! You are my favourite travel tuber by far. Your English is very, very good. I can only speak one language, and it's so fascinating to me how good your English is as a primary Russian speaker. Please be careful and have fun!
Keep up the good work man I love your videos.
Very welcome to Istanbul!
nice
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
You have to check Pula, Croatia fortifications. There is a plenty of them because Pula was main harbour for Austro Hungarian empire
Pretty sure you're the first to make a video of these 👍
In a defensive tunnel system, you would want to have things that look like the beginnings of tunnels (that you said look like they just lead to rock), I would call it al alcove, as a way to find cover if you happen to come under attack while in the tunnel. If someone were to throw a grenade or shoot at you, you would be able to duck into the alcove and avoid some damage and have a better spot to regroup and fire from as well.
I.m amazed at the lack of graffiti
Awesome adventure, Vaga 👌
Gotta walk on the escalator
It is clearly 941. That is very interesting.. 16:49
'.....uses lanes isolated from the traffic' aka F******g bus lanes :) Next Albanian bunkers? Nice exploration!
Your videos are great. I am very well-travelled and will continue to do a lot more travel, but I am certain I will never get to see any of the places in your videos - that makes it so interesting.
Maybe the railway was just there to transport the rock and dirt as they dug out the tunnel. They didn't put it under because that would mean people would be put closer to the surface and the German bombs.
Very cool. Thanks, from America!
Man, you live very near my house.
Be careful out there ..
bro what you doing in turkey
I had to go to Wikipedia to remember why Turkey was threatened by Nazi Germany. Fascist Italy invaded Greece in 1941 but struggled to conquer the Greeks so Nazi Germany attacked later that year. I suppose Turkey felt threatened but Germany turned to attacking the USSR in 1941 so the threat must have dissipated.

This was the exact reason why it was decided to construct the defense line.
