Exploring The Remains Of Allerton Manor, Bullet Riddled Obelisk & Allerton Golf Course, Liverpool
Allerton Country Walk is around seven miles long (if you include the
optional route around Childwall Woods) through the countryside
atmosphere of Liverpool’s diverse parks, woodlands, open spaces and
public footpaths. During the two to three hour walk, you will pass through
a landscape full of historical interest along with a wide variety of flora and
fauna. Follow the walking guide and map to discover more. To help you
along the route, signage has been placed periodically as a guide.
the sandstone obelisk which belonged to the original 18th century house. It is of square plan, and is mounted on plinth.
The obelisk is Grade II listed which used to mark the end of a tree-lined avenue leading to Allerton Hall.
One side is pocked by (reputed) bullet holes, which probably got there by target practice along the avenue, and not as a result of a firefight.
Allerton Golf Club House is a ruined Neoclassical building located in Allerton, Liverpool, England. Completed in 1815 by the architect Jacob Fletcher,the building was built on the site of a previous one which had been destroyed by a fire. This replacement building was occupied by the Fletcher family for 104 years before being purchased in 1923 by the Liverpool Corporation, who converted the mansion into a clubhouse for a newly built golf course. In 1944 another fire broke out, leaving the building in ruins. On 14 March 1975 the ruins became a Grade II listed structure.
if you go off the walk there is a load of disused stuff to see...which is always good.

When I was a kid growing up in vale road the orangery still had remnants of glass and the rose garden to the side was well kept. Always had to watch out for the parky and the park bizzy

Terrible that Allerton Tower was pulled down. Looked immense in the old photographs. I don't remember this, but as a kid, I was in Allerton Towers with my parents and my Dad found an old coach in the undergrowth. This must have been around 30 years ago. I've been a fair few times since but cannot find it anywhere.

i worked on allerton priory in the early 70s for clayton and dorsman i was an apprentice joiner maintaining all the box sash windows before the painters arrived there was hundreds but i became a box sash expert keep up the good films . do you know about the tunnels in dale street that provided the draught through the furnesses to send hot air to the offices in the municiple buildings the vents are still over the doors . clayton and dorsman had joiners in all the council buildings.
At the Menlove Avenue end of the lane there used to be a massive semi-public tip in the late 60s/early 70s. dumped vehicles etc. Spent many hours on the golflinks.This photo was taken near the radio transmitter with the 1st tee in the background. i.redd.it/83a9e0dpvgx71.jpg. If you think about it John and Paul would have used it as a short cut for years. the Greek style frontage was the remains of the burned down house. There was a . putting green and a cafe there for years, The tunnel in Allerton Tower led to an ice store I was told as a boy. Top fed in winter lasted till summer, roof fell in many years ago. Incidentally the flats on Menlove were built on bomb debris. Great videos for the exiled. Thank you.

Hi George and Eric,l been cycling around Allerton golf club and the bridel path way for some time now but never seen it so muddy When I have cross over the golf pathway never been hit by a golf ball maybe l am lucky,this is a lovely part of Liverpool, Best wishes to you Eric hope all goes well. Hello martin thanks for.watching its a really nice part of liverpool this still baffles me why they allow public to walk across these places Another mad thing is that huge radio tower right in the middle of the golf course
My nan always used to point out the bullet holes on banks road Methodist church from when german bombers used to strafe the gas works.

It always the way isn't it mate most times I've been out myself lately its either lashed down or dead windy lol
With my very limited golf knowledge, I beleive that parr is the number of hits with a golf bat the course designer says it takes to get around the course. For instance, the 1st hole could be 4 parr, so "should" take 4 shots to get it in the hole. If you take more than that you are 'over parr' if you take less you are 'under parr'. However to quote someone once, 'golf, is a good walk spoiled'.
