My wee great granny was a patient in that part of the hospital before being moved to an annex on the grounds. I remember the semi-circle verandas and being served lime cordial from a large plastic jug while residents sat around in the nearby tv room. It was lovely but sad place. Still know her room when I drive past.

Had my appendix removed in 1965 when I was only 7 in the RAI. In those day that meant two weeks in hospital. I vaguely remember sitting out in a huge metal chair with other patients on one of the curved balconies at the end of the ward. I also have memories of a cranky old elevator with iron gates but that’s not on your video. Perhaps it was taken away years ago. Thanks for posting this. Really interesting but a shame this old building is being left to rot and decay

Thank you for showing us this stunning old hospital, I worked here with a team of eight guys for two weeks when it was a nursing home back in 2002. We completely redecorated all the rooms and corridors. Council bureaucracy had a big part in the buildings sad end.

The modern equivalent of this building will last about 50 years. You're right that at some point it likely became too expensive to update, but In my opinionit would be better to update a building like this than replace it with the flimsy plasterboard and curtainwall rubbish we build now.

It’s horrible too see some people thinking it’s cool to ruin and vandalise the building, maybe a lack of respect? I’m not sure. I remember back in the day sitting in the canteen on the ground floor waiting for my wee mum to finish her shift umpteen times a week. Think where the “new kitchen”/laundry was around the location of the old RAI’s mortuary. Funny thing now thinking back, that long ground floor still freaks me out haha. The stairs near the lift shaft were awful i always thought someone stood there, I must only have been about 10/11 years old back then so imagination was running wild. Cheers for showing the video it brought back some happy memories

I live just up from this place, and as a youth I love exploring this building, this beautiful piece of architecture is one of my favourite places to go, as it fills me with a sense of the uncanny, and in my opinion I think the graffiti shows how a place with no worth to most people, is a canvas for creativity, it’s a great place and it’s a shame that others my age can’t respect it

Nice video lads! With graffiti (in at least my opinion) it all just depends... if the graffiti is done in a very decayed building, or on a building that holds no significants then I see no harm in it, and even applaud the artist for creating a nice piece of artwork. However if it is done in a building with lots of significants or on some beautiful architecture, even on something that holds a lot of sentiment for someone then I would say it can become mindless vandalism!

  • @Urbandoned

    @Urbandoned

    3 жыл бұрын

That makes sense and we agree with you. A ruined building of no historical significance with modern, boring design would be a haven for graffiti of all sorts, but something like this hospital, with incredible architecture and a detailed history, should stray away from being vandalised, in order to respect the architects that made it.

Great video I do hope the rest of the main buildings do get restored, I have explored many abandoned hospitals and industrial buildings particularly in the late 80s and early nineties and so much architecture has been lost over the last years for reasons from costly expensive conversions to they were left for to long and were in an advanced state of decay...swept away only to be replaced with rabbit hutch soulless type housing ....our Victorian engineer's would not be pleased if they were around today.

I really hope they turn it into flats, offices or anything to help preserve it. I think as it’s attached to a building that has been converted their is hope hopefully. Let’s hope they preserve all the features you show. I think Graffiti in abandoned buildings is just senseless and a lack of care for their local heritage and environment. I think their is a place for Graffiti but not in an abandoned historic building they should be given a place to do it.

Responsible and considerate exploring lads! As mentioned by others, watch out for Asbestos and other hazardous materials. I could see in the basement what could be asbestos on the steam pipeline, that could explain why there's no graffiti there. Hazardous materials are one of the reasons the buildings become too expensive to refurbish and have to be abandoned. Denbigh Asylum had loads of it in the service culvert. I believe there's hardly the budget to decommission nuclear sites in the future so don't be surprised when a lower risk building like this isn't properly processed. If you get sick in the future, you'll have absolved any claim by having entered the property without permission. Rule of thumb with asbestos is to prevent the dust from getting airborne, so it's safest when wet and undisturbed.

I don't think graffiti has any place in abandoned buildings - it ruins the heritage of the place and just encourages more vandalism and graffiti. It starts a vicious circle which helps contribute to a buildings total decay. The worst example I've seen recently is on a walk to an abandoned mine where vandals decided to graffiti trees. What even?!

Isn't it shameful that this incredible building is in such a state. Yes, costs would be high to repair, but had they been repaired with more care in the past, it wouldn't have got in this state. Gorgeous structure - sadly neglected and no doubt some cheap crap build will go there at some point.

I doubt any form of “creative output” would be worthy of recognition if its inside of an abandoned and derelict building

We think this building is listed, but that doesn't mean it can immediately be converted, there are a lot of other things that have to be taken into account

I can imagine that there's a lot of asbestos and lead paint in the place. But buildings like this shouldn't go to rot. Nice to know its a listed building. I hope the police are still friendly with you

Grafitti is vandalism, but can still have worth. Depends on the message, and your own view of things. Historic graffiti though, there's another consideration.

Graffiti can be a creative outlet even as vandalism to make a statement ,convey a message but to do so in abandonedments seems pointless imo. You could argue the greatest acts of vandalism are by those who allow these buildings to fall into such disrepair in the first place.

To answer your question I personally think graffiti has its place in the world however not in these buildings. These beautiful buildings have an amazing story to tell of their own and should be allowed to be seen in their natural decayed state as a mark of respect for what they once represented.

Answer to the question: i think graffiti that isnt that big is fine, only if it matches with the architecture on the building to make it look a tiny bit better.
