I once was the club secretary in this club, maybe I can give some information and add a wee bit if correction. The Club was never a snooker club. The emblem that was unknown on the video actually explains what it was. It was The Paisley Liberal Club. For much of it’s life it a had strong connection with the Liberal party. In fact one of it’s past members was a Prime Minister. His name was Asquith. For the vast majority of it’s life it was a men only club but this changed during my time as Club Secretary. Although formally a political based club for decades it was really a social club. When built, the club owned the whole building including the shops below it as well as the rooms that were described as different. These had been sold off. The three main rooms were as follows. The downstairs room that was ornate was the lounge. The small room was the bar and the main hall with the disco balls was the function hall. The club was for many years very successful but as has happened with social clubs all over it became a thing of the past. I’ll health resulted in me standing down from the executive committee and indeed hadn’t been in the building for about the last fifteen years of the club’s existence. To the best of my knowledge the club tried everything it could to survive but this unsuccessful. In the latter part of it’s life it move from being a club to being under an entertainment license. This was in the hope of attracting other non members. I do agree that it’s a shame to see the building going to waste however, it was designed to be a club. This means that it is very difficult to use it for anything else. The costs involved in a proper restoration would be astronomical. I saw a approximate 40 year old estate to refurbish the external of the building. If my memory serves me correctly it was about £350,000. I should also point out that it is incredibly difficult to imagine how it could be upgraded to make it Disabled friendly. Not to mention the lack of parking. I hope this information is of interest.

The new owners are restoring it! "We are both extremely excited to restore this landmark listed building on Paisley's High Street to its former glory and we look forward to bringing it back into use for the local community.
I remember going in there with my mum, auntie and uncle. My uncle was a member and this was where I had my first ever go at snooker. It was many years ago, maybe 35 years ago when I was about 8!!! Great memories.

@@Urbandoned Yeah, that's the down side. No money, no repairs and it's a goodbye to the building
The modern upstairs area was home to a Music schools called Loud n Proud. The building was falling to bits and was regularly broken into unfortunately. The 3 small rooms in the large red room were for guitar practice/drum practice. This video gave me such a blast from the past, thanks lads ^_^
Coat of arms = PLC = Paisley Liberal Club. I was in there many times in the 90s and early 00s, it was a cracking venue, loads of fun, and a crying shame that it has been left to rot like this.
"these snooker tables are massive." = normal size! Great video!
Fantastic building, lots of new and old elements to it..some parts made me think wow wow wow...love the Scotland explores something great about them...this building has got a lot of life left in it...

Think I played snooker there a few times around 22 years ago.
Played in there regularly over the years. Was a good club. Although if doing a gig in the upper hall, getting the music gear up those stairs was a nightmare. It's such a shame that it has gone into disrepair.

@@Urbandoned To be honest it doesn't look much different, for being a prestigious club at one time it ended up a bit of a dive.
I worked on that very cobbled back street in Paisley and had no idea there was a snooker club there lol
That stained glass is beautiful - sad to see some of the windows in disrepair near those stairs. Saw online they submitted a planning application to convert it into studio flats last year but as of right now it's available to rent. Probably just waiting for the planning permission to go through. Better than it being demolished I suppose but shame features like those old toilets will be destroyed.

Dads Funeral reception was there in sept 2009
If I lived near this I'd probably just go in and play a few frames. Save me from paying the prices at my local club haha
10:40 pretty sure these were music studios? I have a vague memory of possibly being there playing drums in one of the small rooms but could be confused with somewhere else

Scotsman in Tenerife, hi Kevin, I was a member there for years.
Joined club for the snooker. Small room off the split bar was a men's only domain.(that's when women were allowed in big lounge) Recall the phone ringing in the bar and the barman shouting out is so and so in club, a wee man in corner shook his head sheepishly, barman on phone, na he's no here. LOL.
Yes it’s such a shame they can’t find some useful use for the building

It was Called the Liberal Club Paisley Hence the LCP in the windows .. according to My Hubby from Paisley burns suppers and weddings
Town centre decline should not be allowed to happen in this way. I agree with Hugh Donaldson, if greedy landlords can't fill their premises, and maintain them to a high level, the council should have powers to reassign them to whatever purpose best fits the town's requirements.
It's a real shame, the Paisley Liberal Social Club used to be thriving as a function hall in the early 2010's. I believe it even used provide practice rooms for music students at the Paisley College (Reid Kerr, now West College Scotland) before closing as well. I believe that's the top floor where the 'lights off' sign is. I just recall working in a local cab firm, it was a nightmare to get a taxi from. People used to think you could get picked up at the winding corner at the Main Door or the pedestrianised back entrance.
You should hit a 147 on then snooker tables
Hard to believe no one's been squatting, that thieves haven't taken more shit, and that the former owner didn't sell those snooker tables!

Would be a shame if someone hired a van and nicked one of them tables 😉
Given they'd already converted some of the upper areas into offices (Not sure if those ballrooms were ever as fancy as downstairs, might've just been reclaimed attic storage space since they go up all the way into the beams) and it's in the middle of town I wouldn't be surprised if this just gets turned into a bland modern office space. They'd probably keep the stained glass but the rest of the features would probably be totally done for. Old fashioned pubs have enough trouble without the added difficulty of having no actual street frontage + seemingly no disabled access (might be hard to open anything new at all with that actually, installing a lift might be tricky with there being different street-level occupants.
@Urbandoned
3 жыл бұрын
That is likely for sure. If the building opened up again, it would definitely need some refurbishments to accompany new rules, such as the disabled entrance as you mentioned.
So sad. It looks like I could walk in the there tomorrow with my on-license, quick chat with the police and two minutes in court and open up on Tuesday morning. It just needs love and care, and proper management. What a waste.

I was on the Committee before it closed a real shame but the police did not want us holding parties even with us doing a lot to keep it going. You did not go up into the turret on the roof.
:Paisley Liberal Club
The underage drinking was likely a move of desperation from the management trying to stay in business- no more no less. Sad

@@DJ-Brownie-UK When people challenge me regarding the validity of the Bible I ask them what they would do if they were the creator of the universe. If God wanted to create you and me as free beings, able to make decisions and choices of our own, how could He do that AND make Himself known to us without then denying us that freedom? Remember we have the freedom to make decisions which are bad as well as good, to do evil as well as do good. God must therefore remain hidden at the same time as allowing us to get to know Him, so you can choose to read and believe the Bible OR you can choose to ignore it. That's divine genius in my view.
