My dad was born in the early 1940s and lived in Golborne for a few years before moving back to Ashton, but he hardly seemed to remember the station though he had heard of it. I think people's lack of memory of the station maybe because alot of people just didn't use the station to travel from because it was much cheaper to travel by bus, like it is today. It's surprising how many people, who where around back then and old enough to remember before these stations closed that they do not remember them. My dad used to go to Southport alot on the train in the 1950s, and he was surprised when I told him Southport had more than one station than the one that is there now - St Lukes, Lord St station, Hesketh Park, Hundred End, Banks, Crossens, Churchtown, but he thought there's only ever been the one station.

Yes there really was lots around there. I believe Golborne Station is reopening at some point. Be much more convenient than going to Newton, Earlestown or Bryn. I've just had a trip to Southport was really surprised I didn't realise there was so many closed lines around there too

@@RWHTrains That would be a good thing to reopen the station, but it won't be the same as the old staiton, it will be devoid of any character, it will be soulless, metal seats, ticket machines and CCTV cameras everywhere. That's not my idea of a train station. I heard they were meant to be re-opening Carr Mill station but the project never got off the ground. Yeah it is surprising how many stations there were in Southport even in a short distance of each other not just in the surrouding suberbs of the town, but I think alot of them closed at different times, some in the 30s and 50s but the last few closed around 1964 with the Beeching axe. Shows how popular the town was back then, Blackpool of course at 3 stations.

I agree. It's good for the travellers and commuters but the new stations are very clinical and all look the same. Looking at this area between Southport and Preston there was lots of stations considering it's all small villages. Just shows how many people used to travel on trains

@@RWHTrains I agree about being clinical and all looking the same, and this is all by design I think. Most people don't care about railways, to them it's just a means of getting from A to B as quick as possible. Yeah Southport had alot of villages with a station in each, as you say it just shows how many people travelled on trains, although even back then it was much cheaper to travel by bus. Not all of the stations closed due to Beeching, many closed because they simply didn't get used much or for other reasons.

@@Embracing01 quite a few shut before Beeching I think. There was so many stations and so little population they were probably never profitable

Golborne station was not on the A49. Ashton-in-Makerfield station was on the A49.
