Exploring German Supermarket for the First Time! | Our Reactions + things we’re excited to try!

When it comes to shopping at the grocery store, I mean... the supermarket, between Deutschland and the USA, there are some noticeable differences. In this video, we react to some of those differences, while also highlighting some things that we are excited to try for the first time since making it to Germany. With the Easter weekend approaching, we had to stock up before the 4 day weekend when virtually all supermarkets will be closed for holiday. We will be back because going to a grocery store in a foreign country is FUN!
We love being out of quarantine and getting to explore our town on walks and the weather today was fantastic! Hoping for more sunny days this summer.
Let us know what foods or treats you think we should try at local supermarkets!

German eggs do not get washed bevor they get sold in supermarkets, the reason is that the natural self preservation of the eggs stays intact and therefore the eggs can be stored much longer.... in the Us and Canada the eggs are washed and therefore need to be stored cold 🥚

We have like 2 or 3 different brands with 3 choices of flavour each and no american in sight for miles. But its a really large store, so theres that. The thing with the honey is, that those are of different plants/trees/flowers. For example, Lindenblüten is as the name suggest a lindentrees blossoms whereas Buchweizen is of buckwheat. Those Maggi bags are a whole meal, well kind of. They are premixed and usually the fresh ingredients need to be bought separately, as listed on the back. Theres even a "how to" on it ;) The curry ketchup is great choice, especially the hot one. In terms of mustard, I like the Löwensenf "extra scharf" but I tend to eat fairly hot and spicy stuff all the time, it might bring you to tears. The boxed milk is usually the pasteurized one, the fresh milk is always kept cool. When it says "fettarm" its fat content is usually around 1 to 1,5%. Mostly coloured in a softer tone. Hope I caught every question and answered to your satisfaction, I'm sorry if I missed one. Take care and enjoy germany

Don't forget to cut the edges! A rather small cut/slice where the stems come out, a more coarse cut where the root is (this part might be a bit hard/"woody"). Peel it like an orange with a knife (top to bottom) or with a special veggie peeler (Sparschäler) around the edges like a potato. To cut it I recommand to cut it in half, lay it on the cut side, cut in slices and the slices as a staple with a 90 degree turn in stripes... or with another turn in cubes.

Hey guys. I just wanted to say that this store is not exactly a supermarket but more of a convenience store. It's already in the name more or less, Nahkauf meaning "close buy", which is a low-key awesome play of words in English). Nahkauf is a franchise of the much larger REWE chain of grocers for smaller communities. Most of my friends living in smaller towns and villages are doing their groceries in larger cities at least once a month or sometimes bi-weekly. The selection there is a lot better and you also get select imported goods from the states. If you ever go to Bayreuth, Amberg or even Nürnberg I am sure you find everything that you want. Since one of you is working as a civilian military contractor, I often read that US military bases have their own shops with American goods. Are you able to make use of those as a contractor?

It would say it´s more the mini mart version from Rewe in small towns or villages instead of a convenience store. Rewe To Go is their convenience store. In the downtown of cities you also sometimes find Rewe City which has not all products. Then there is also their hyper market Rewe Center.

3:50 Mövenpick Gourmet Crème is just the name of this jam product. In German the terms "Creme" or "cremig" do not refer to the English "Cream" (that would be "Sahne"/"sahnig" or "Rahm"/"rahmig"), but to the producs texture and consistency, which simply means it is spreadable on bread/toast etc. 4:27 For honey, Europeans differentiate between creamy (cremig) and fluid (flüssig). There is no actual cream inside the honey too, it is just mor spreadable, whereas fluid honey is more for dribbling (like maple sirup). The pistachio and coconut spreads are based on vegetable fats sweetened with honey, I guess (as far as I can figure).

In fact names like "créme" for a jam is kind of a trick to sidestep the strict regulation within the EU concerning the naming of jam (Konfitüre / Konfitüre--Extra), marmelade (Marmelade: only citrus fruits) and jelly (Gelee). The correct naming depends on the amount /relation of (real) fruits, sugar and coagulating substances. Fun fact: products with a luxurious / high quality appearance may have less fruits (and more flavoring agents) to enhance the revenue of the food comapnies. ;-) The general/technical term for these type of products in german is "Fruchtaufstrich" (fruit spread).

Employee protection is a top priority in Germany and this also includes opening hours. Sunday is generally a day of rest (Ruhetag) or "Day of the Lord" and is intended for church and recreation etc. It is also not allowed to do noisy gardening or home work, loud music etc. This also applies to working days between 13-15h and 22-6h (Ruhezeiten = rest periods). Exceptions are restaurants/Imbiss, stores in train stations and airports, gas stations, cinemas (entertainment), etc. 😉 Baking powder comes in little paper bags, usually 5 pieces wrapped in foil. Spices are usually in a shelf nearby the seasoning mixes. „Bio“ (short for biological food/ ingrediances, no chemicals and artificial flavorings) means organic food. It is hard to say what to buy, there is just one way to firure out: Try everything 😂 H-Milch (homogenized milk) is uncooled, fresh milk you find at the fridge section. Don't expact items in large amounts (Gallons) like in the US. Usually in Europe you go on a food run more often, to buy fresh stuff. 😉 Try also the big variety of cheese (cheaper than in the US, Also wine) and bread/sandwich spreads.

I just want to warn you that you will probably be looked at weird or be asked to stop filming in many german stores, espacially if you film people directly. Germans have a very different understanding of privacy and also of what is public, we do have a so called "panoramafreiheit" in our laws which means that you can take video and foto in public if you don't film a person directly but rather the panorama. BUT germany also has the "Recht am eigenen Bild" which means that theoretically every filmed person has the right to their own picture meaning that they would need to be asked if they are okay with the publishing or sometimes even taking of a foto, another forbidden thing in germany is the recording of non-public conversations without the knowledge or against the will of a third person it's called "Vertraulichkeit des Wortes"(non-public is defined differently as in the US again), this also comes into affect with videotaping, thats also one of the reasons why its often illegal to film a trafficstop in germany. But apart from that it was nice seeing your reaction to our german grocery store, even if it was just a small Nahkauf :P

It is (in general) not illegal to film a traffic stop, but I would encourage anyone to get legal advise before publishing that. What you call "Panoramafreiheit" (§§22f. KunstUrhG) is arguably not really a thing anymore since DSGVO. But apart from filming the person preparing the meat I think they should be in the clear. I think what your refering to is §23 Abs. 1 Nr. 2 KunstUrhG which is arguably outdated since DSGVO and would not apply here, for the main element whereever shown are people not something else here. Give yourself a treat and google a big Rewe or Edeka Center, it's still small compared to an american Supermarket, but the variety oh boy! You'll find your cilantro and everything else you were looking for. Also: if you are looking for asien ethnic groceries find yourself an asian Supermarket. Regarding the Questions I Remember: Kohlrabi: it's really yummi raw or cooked with creamy sauce. You need to peel it (peel is rather thick) but then just cut it to sticks and ear on its own or with a condiment The big round kinda rooty looking thing was celery (we have different types, most stores also have the celerey greens that you know from the states). Personally I dislike celery root, but it's a base ingredient of many German soup recipe. Peanut Butter: all the americans and Canadians I know complained about German Peanut butter, so they got their kraft ones on base. Condiments and dressings: Ranch is not a thing in Germany. I never had it, so I can't compare but maybe try "sylter Art" dressing. The other bottle you held "Remoulade" it's tartar sauce so you eat it with fried fish and a lot of people use it for sandwiches. Curry Ketchup and Gewürzketchup: oh yes, they are great. Much different from tomato ketchup though. Much sweeter. Mostly eaten with fries or bratwurst (don't put it on Schnitzel, yuck) Mustards: for Sandwiches get a good chunky sweet mustard (süßer Senf). For Sausages, since you like it spicy go for "scharf" and for cooking "mittelscharf" cuts it.

But as a sauce it doesn't exist here. You can make it yourself though, Just find a recipe online. The ingredients for it you can get in the supermarkets.

That's not typical dressing at 7:15. Dressing is used for salad in Germany. But i think the definition is different is English. Remoulade is something you mostly eat with deep fried fish. I don't think it even exists in the US. I like it a lot but i think its you either like it or hate it. The other thing i couldn't read but if its garlic sauce its mostly used to go with grilled meat or shrimps. The woman at the butcher shop asked you "without bones" btw. Knochen means bone. Just so you know next time ;) If you are not a trained professional German bagger use a cart. Put all your stuff back in the cart at the cashier then bag it outside or in the bagging area which your small store probably doesn't have but you'll will recognize them in larger stores.

Great video guys. :) Cilantro is called Koriander and if they don’t have fresh one you’re gonna find it at least dried and ground in the spices section. ;) First produce item is called Kohlrabi and it‘s a turnip cabbage. You peel and slice it into sticks, then cook it. But it’s also enjoyable as a raw snack. Second produce is the most commonly used part of celery plant here, it‘s called Knollensellerie (lit. tubercle celery) and it‘s the plant’s root. We use it in a lot of soups. The green part is called Stangensellerie (lit. stick or pole celery) and the typical produce you know. Backpulver (backing powder) comes in little pouches of 4 to 6. And those pouches of „seasoning“ ain‘t seasoning but instant soups and sauces. Usually you have to mix the content with water or cream as described on the back to get the sauce for the meal or the soup that printed on the front.

Now that's typical German, personally witnessed a zillion times before: As soon as a German notices that someone she or he is talking to is of an English speaking country, they'll switch to English. This is not meant to either offend you or to speed up the conversation in order to save time, it is because Germans love to practice their English skills, and they think it is polite to give you proof of them being able to talk English to you. Tanner, your German is great already, kudos to you! If you prefer to practice your German rather than to speak English, let the people know! They'll understand (most of them do). The best way to pick up German is to simply speak it, f*** mistakes, no one cares, and it will get better every day.

The selection of "only" 3 peanut butter choices in this small store is because the army base is nearby. Normally a store of this size would probably have only one brand of it. In Germany peanut butter is not a big thing like it is in the USA. The thing why honey in the USA is much more expensive is how the bees are used. The bees in Germany/Europe are there to produce honey and pollinate the blossoms. And they stay at one place (thats why there is this the selection of different honeys on the shelf: forrest honey, meadow honey...). In the USA the bees are carried around to pollinate different fields, plantations... The production of the honey is not the focus. So there are much less beekeepers that focus on producing honey which makes it more expensive.

I don't know what it is like today (I haven't lived in Germany for almost ten years now), but when I was a kid, it was quite common to know someone who keeps bees. In my childhood village of 500 people, I think there were three of them. And it wasn't really their job, but rather a hobby. So in rural areas in Germany, there's a lot of honey to be had. Sometimes, it's even cheaper to buy honey from a private person than buying it in the supermarket. And I love the different types of honey you can get in Germany.

2:18 Even as a child i liked Kohlrabi. Because it has a bit of sweetness and no biter flavours which most kids don't like. To use it you have to cut of a layer on the top and the buttom because it is a bit hard and fibrous. Then you have to peel it with a knife because of the same reason. Now you can eat it raw if you like or cook it in various ways. You can cut it in pieces and cook it like carrots and use it as a side dish. Goes well with a bit of melted butter or cream. Or for a Vegetable soup with potatos. You can also cut it in slices or cubes and roast it in a pan. Some people make a vegetarian schnitzel out of it: Cut Slices, turn in flour so it has thin layer on it, than into a raw scrambled egg and into breadcrums (german. 'Semmelbrösel'). Now fry it in your pan like a normal schnitzel. It don't taste like meet but i think it taste good neverless. You ever used the thicker stem of a broccoli? If you peel it and cook it tastes a bit like Kohlrabi. 2:28 Yeah, if you have a asian store in your town it is the way to go or grow you own chilis like me because of the bad selection and they are a bit pricy in the supermarket. 2:50 It is the tuber/root of celery. It is mostly used to get flavors in souces and soups. And you can also make a vegetarian schnitzel out of it in the same way i explained it. 😄 5:12 It mostly packed in small paper bags with only 15-20g in it and in a bundle of five of this in a plastic foil. 5:45 They are common, but i never used them. It is faster way to get flavor in your food but you don't need them if you know how to cook. And some people are skeptical/don't like it because of some ingredients like glutamate etc. 7:32 If you like it spicy buy 'Löwensenf' 😉 8:35 It is 'durable milk' (german: 'haltbare Milch' or short 'H-Milch') it is boild in special way to make it last long without refrigeration. Once opend you have to put it in a fridge. But you can also find fresh milk in fridge-section mostly near the cheese. Oh you find it anyway 9:04....😅 Have fun exploring Germany 😀

I have seen ranch before but it's not a common dressing in Germany, you can make it from scratch though! As for baking powder, it comes in small little bags it's commonly not far from the sugar and flower section so you were on the right track. @2:00 in Europe eggs are usually not as thoroughly washed as in the US, plus chicken are vaccinated against salmonella. Unwashed eggs retain their natural protective layer on the shell, so they will usually last 2-3 weeks without refrigeration (after all out in the wild the egg should not spoil while it incubates). In some stores they are also refrigerated to extend the shelf life even further. But once you refrigerate them you have to keep them refrigerated, as there might be condensation on the shell (also on the inside!) that dilutes the wax layer. @2:19 turnip cabbage - can be stewed and eaten warm as a side dish (e.g. combined with holandaise) or cold in oil/vinegar dressing as salad; or slice and deep fry for a low-carb alternative to french fries. @2:51 celery root, celariac - it's often used for soup, but it can also e.g. be sliced (about 1cm thick), breaded and pan-fried to make a vegan "Viennese Schnitzel". @8:30 that's UHT milk - it has been heat-treated so it doesn't spoil for weeks. But be aware that once you open the package it has to be refrigerated and consumed within a few days, just like ordinary milk. Even worse: The UHT treatment kills all germs in it (that's why it can be stored unrefrigerated) *including* the lactic acid bacteria that produce the typical smell of spoiled milk and usually keep other germs at bay. Therefore the milk might actually spoil without tasting or smelling bad! You will find fresh milk in the refrigerated shelf, in packs as well as glass bottles (usually those are returnable for deposit). Many Europeans dislike the taste of UHT milk and will only use it as "emergency stash".

Nahkauf is a regional very small supermarket directly in the city. When you have a car, drive to a bigger city and go to an EDEKA. Search for the biggest in your region. They have bigger sections for ethnic food, but herr in Germany we do not have that much mexican food like you are used to in America :( Kohlrabi: You can peel it and cut it in small slices to eat it raw. It smells strong. Maybe try it with a dip. Otherwise you can cook it and eat it with bechamel sauce. You should peel roots of celery. It oftrn comes in bags 'Suppengrün' as veggies for a selfmade soup. I also use the roots of cellery in my potato salad and cook slices and cut it in tiny pieces for it. You can search for chilis in asia or turkish stores. This would be the best option. There are also some special foods you can get much cheaper there. You can get baking powder in small sached(usually 3-5 together). It is near the flour and other baking stuff and most of the time it is placed on the lower shelfs. Eggs aren't refrigerated in Germany, because we do not wash them before packing them. After washing you have to keep them cool. There are two types of milk, 'H-Milch' also 'haltbare Milch' is the unrefrigerated milk. You can store them for a longer time. The other one is fresh. You can search for 'Milchtankstelle' in your region. Some farmers have vending maschines with bottles and a maschine to get very fresh milk. For kids it is better to heat this milk up ans cool it down before drinking, because it is not processed, but tastes so much better than milk from a store. Sometimes you can get there veggies, eggs and honey, too. Search for a 'Imkerei', you can get local honey :) The Maggi and Knorr stuff in the bags are like mixtures of spices and powders to cook meals. It is mostyl used by people who aren't used to cook very often or are uncreative in my opinion. When you don t want to buy many spices and other stuff for a meal you buy this. Many people don't buy this stuff because of Glutamat etc. Sometimes you can buy spices on local farmers markets. You can also find there fresh fruits and veggies, meat, fish, flowers,... You can buy asparagus in glass cans or frozen all the year, but soon will be the time of the year when you will find asparagus everywhere in stores, next to the streets,... You can get green and white one. Curry ketchup is a 👍 You use it for the bbq, some people for fried potatoes, to schnitzel,... the brand HELA has lots of different ones. From mild to very hot. You will not find any ranch sauce here in Germany. I can't think of anyrhing that tastes nearly as ranch sauce...sorry :( You can try sylter dressing for salads, I think this is the best dressing to buy. Many peoply prepare their own dressings and lots of people use vinegar and oil for it, added with mustard, a bit pf sugar, salt and pepper for example. Mustard: the most common to buy is Löwensenf. It is from Düsseldorf and comes in different variations from mild to spicy and in tube or glass. In bavaria there is also a sweet mustard who goes to 'Weisswurst'. It is a white sausage who is heated up in water or vegetable stock. You have to get off the sausage casing and eat it with the sweet mustard and pretzel.

The green round vegetable with the sprouts all around are called "Kohrabi". The large wrinkly lump you had in your hand is a celery root. It gets peeled, sliced or grated, then cooked. Grated raw Celery root makes a great salad. Dr Oettker has baking mixes. You also buy baking powder in small per-measured packets. That way you always get fresh, full strength baking powder for your baking project. Milk will be sold in cartons that don't need refrigeration. We used them on our sail boat on the Chiemsee all the time. Knorr soup packages are very practical. Just add mix to a half liter of boiling water; stir for a few minutes and you have great soups.

Cilantro is Korriander leaves, there is also Korriander seeds. baking powder is Backpulver, baking soda is called Natron - you can buy it in pharmacies. Cumin is called Kreuzkümmel. For american style of brown sugar you should look for it in asian stores - since american brown sugar is actually white sugar with molasses added to it. In Europe we call the raw sugar - brown sugar which is healthier but drier when used in american recipes. There is milk in the cooling section as well, this milk has not been heat treated to last longer. Curry ketchup is used with the white bratwurst also called currywurst.

Fun fact: Nahkauf (name of the supermarket you visited) means literally: Near(by) shopping. Secondly: It is not standard in Germany that the staff at the butcher`s touches meat and sausages without gloves and lets her hang down. In addition we have two types of milk: One without expiration date that you dont have to put in the refrigerator and the one you know from the States which is in the cooling section. I dont know any delicious white salad dressing in a bottle, the ones you had your hands on are for sure horrible (but taste differs). You have to do it yourself with cream, herbs and vinegar.
