OMG! So awesome foe you to have a job that allows you to move across the world. I’m a former Army brat and spent ‘83-92 in Germany. First Pirmasean then Mainz. Went to high school in Wiesbaden. I miss Germany and Europe in general. So much history and culture that the US just doesn’t have. Love your open mindedness as well. Your daughter is going to be so well rounded and is very fortunate to have this experience. I wish every kid in the US could have such and experience. Unfortunately some never even leave the US. Wish you all the best!!

I'd ETS from the military Jan 97 and been living on the the German economy since then. It wasn't easy but that's life. Explore explore and more exploring of Germany. Wishing you and your family all the best of luck. Schöne Grüße aus Mittelfranken.

I moved to Germany from England in late 1969. I was on my own, no commitments, first time leaving the family home. I was excited, too. But I had to start speaking and understanding German straight away, as I was going to work for a German company in Cologne. It was the best decision I ever made and brought me so many new experiences that I wouldn't have realised if I had just stayed in England for the rest of my life. I stayed in Germany until 1982. I still visit friends there regularly, although Covid has made that impossible for the time being. I think once you have discovered German food, you'll never want to leave!

Germany has a little bit of everything, and it makes a difference in which German "Subculture" you end up. As a non-Bavarian German naturally my least favourite is the Bavarian one ;-) but Americans seem to enjoy it. So have fun. And if you stay long enough, enjoy having your children run around freely.

@@OurStorytoTell Nice areas in Bavaria would be the Königsee area in the south east, the Tegernsee area south east of Munich and of course the Allgäu (all of them are close to the Alps. Here you can also find the famous "Neuschwanstein" castle). Also very picturesque is the "Altmühltal" in Franconia in Germany, and the city "Rothenburg ob der Tauber". Very picturesque is also the "Chiemsee area" in Southern Bavaria. But Germany has so many beautiful parts; nice is also the area of the rivers "Mosel" and "Rhine" and many parts of Rhineland-Palatinate or Saarland. Hamburg is also a very exciting city and Dresden a very beautiful city. Of course areas close to the North Sea or the Baltic Sea or the many lakes in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (North East) are very interesting and beautiful.

"Get a car, ship it". Cars are built in Germany and Europe. Do you carry owls to Athens? They are already there. For European approval you need different requirements than for the US. The rear turn signals must not be red, they must be amber and separate. Cars in Europe are usually a bit smaller than in the US. This makes it easier to find a parking space.

  • @tobiwan001

@@tobiwan001 If the car doesn't get US military approval. No red indicators in the back, or special approvals. Often different headlights in front. But Subaru is a global brand, there should be the parts. Then KM / H instead of miles. Next point, the exhaust gas values are measured differently. To do this, the manufacturer changes the setting of the engine electronics, or it falls into an unfavorable class. And then you certainly need the TÜV approval, often documents from the manufacturer. Then the vehicle is considered to be new and does not need to be TÜV again until after 3 years. Thereafter every 2 years. Then ship and declare. For the money you could have bought an automatic car in Europe because the same model is available here. The gasoline in Europe is better than in US. Diesel is the same. Do not use heating oil, it is colored. If this color is discovered in the tank it will be very expensive. If an electric car you will have problems with the plug.

If you want you can rent a little boat and paddle along the canals that flow all through Hamburg and offer amazing views. (strongly recommend that!) And most of the things on the list are actually in walking distances to each other, so always look what is just around the corner! :D If you are culturally inclined: Hamburg is actually the third largest Musical capital in the world! One big stage theater is even located slap dang in the red light district. (Don't worry! That sounds worst than it is for someone who has never seen St. Pauli) We Hamburgers really love our culture and diversities. You will see hords of teens wanting to party the night away, and standing beside them at a traffic light are sharply dressed men and woman on their way to a musical. It's awesome! Covid put a damper on most of the festivals and cultural events but hopefully that will have resolved itself if you ever decide to visit. Best of luck to you in beautiful Germany. But true friendship has a huge value here, so once you find your people, I’m sure you will create some really meaningful relationships if that‘s something you want. @@OurStorytoTell I live in Austria, next to the German & Swiss boarder. The area around Lake Constance is beautiful. It doesn‘t matter which side of the lake (German, Austrian or Swiss side), there are many beautiful cities (Lindau, Constance, Bregenz), areas to swim or hike. Some even take their bike and ride around the lake. I havn‘t done it before, but it‘s on my to do list. If you go for a bike tour around the lake with a kid it‘s definitely wise to plan a few stopps (maybe stay over night at one or two campsites). Skiing in winter is also definitely something you should do. The area where I live (Austrian alps) is perfect for it. We have many German tourists that love skiing in Austria. When your daughter is older (3 years old) the City of Constance (Germany, near Swiss boarder) is also great to visit because they have a Sea Life there or you could go to the Ravensburger Spieleland (amusement Park for Kids). Constance and Ravensburg are in Baden-Würtenberg though (state next to Bavaria), but not that far away. Salzburg is a very beautiful City in Austria. One of my favourites! I recommend to visit the ice cave and salt mines there. You do need to have a baby carrier though because you do take 1000 steps in the ice caves and also walk a long way in the salt mines and that would be to much for your daughter to walk. The ice caves are huge, beautiful and so impressive. The tour through the salt mines with the guide is very informative and cool. They tell you a lot about the history of the mines and the city of Salzburg. Also visit all the castles there. One of them has a bird of pray show 👍🏻😃 Vienna (capital of Austria) is also always a classic.
