Never expected to see my hometown on KZread. It’s a small town with a thousand years of history. It has been prosperous before. Due to three rivers forming a big dock here. The river, wooden bridge and old streets are my childhood memories.

I particularly hate other people lying,,, what are the consequences in Chinese criticism, do you know? This is dictatorship, the government has the right to control everything,,, everything is very beautiful here, but there are concentration camps in Xinjiang, and the people have no freedom of speech. Behind the prosperous people are crimes against humanity. The poor people have no voice in this country. chance,,,

This step back in time at Yuantong is priceless. I’m glad u document so much of its architecture and streetscapes. Let’s hope the pressures of urbanization does not rob this magnificent heritage that’s so delicately and precariously balanced together by a very fragile economic system.

Also, the relaxing vibe you feel in this old town is actually the uniqueness of 川渝. People in these two provinces are very keen on 麻将 and live a Buddha-Care lifestyle that is so different from the coastal part of China XD. Idk why they are so unique but it seems to be such an exception, so I named it as 川渝-exceptionalism.

Yes, tourism in places like this can really motivate some youth to stay here, sometimes I just love this vibe and fancy about what is it like to stay permanently at small town like this. Speaking about the conflict of commercialization and the preservation of its own vibe, I think it may not be necessarily so definite. I moved to Munich at the beginning of Sep. and had a visit at its old town. It is definitely overwhelmingly crowded (in terms of Europe) and I even got the feeling of going back to Chinese Metropolis LOL. It is also heavily commercialized, you can see a street full of luxury store(Gucci, Chanel etc.) that exist in any other big cities. But since its well-preserved Architecture of Neo-Gothic style (and other historic styles I cannot name), it still gives me a very great feeling about shuffling through the old Europe, buildings like St Peter's church was built first at 13. century but still well preserved. You don't get the luxury of seeing such an old architectural complex in China since ancient Chinese architectural were wooden and there were so many wars happened. In conclusion, I think it doesn't bother so long as the tourist attraction can preserve what is unique for it. For me the commercial part looks identical no matter its in China or in Germany, the real difference take place on how much effort the local government speed on preserving its own heritage.

Gorgeous! This Vlog shall be kept in the city library of 元通. It will serve the purpose of historical study by. young generations who need to know what has happened in China. I am afraid that ancient scenery has been replaced too fast by the cookie-cutting architecture or more truthfully, the “shallow dish” culture. Please do keep your vlogs. You will have an eBook about China, which is more meaningful and valuable than today’s metropolitans - just a collection of geometric objects.

Dear Katherine, could you remember this video at *5:07 that bldg was a Catholic Church in a Chinese Traditional bldg. I thought l saw a Crucifix in the Center at the Altar. If so, that was amazing to find, a Traditional Catholic Church that was like centuries back. Must be very interesting to discover the history of that Church. Would love to make a pilgrimage there. Love the grey tiled roofs. Truly an ancient town, 200 yrs ago, that house was built n still live in by that 90 yr old man. China is truly fascinating, so rich in history n just amazing what we can find in the 21st Century!
