I visited Pyramiden in the late 1970's when it was still a working Russian coal mine - fascinating place. We were treated to a tour of the town including a meal in the canteen and a visit to the museum. They had a big sports hall and a cinema where we were shown a Russian cartoon. I remember trading lighters and digital watches for fur hats. We spend 2 weeks camping in some huts across the fjord from Pyramiden, are these huts still there and have you ever visited them? They had a couple of ponds beside the hut that we used for washing and swimming - very cold!

Omg that is the coolest story!! How come you were there to visit! I want to know more! Tell me anything you remember 🤩 I don't think I've been to that cabin, but Christoffer has! Christoffer asks if that cabin had electricity?

@@CeciliaBlomdahl We were on a School Expedition in 1979 and stayed for 3 weeks in the cabins across Billefjord from Pyramiden. As the tourist industry didn't really exist at that time we had to ship all of our supplies to Longyearbyen in crates from Bergen and then transport it all to the cabins using inflatables. At the time the cabins didn't have electricity or even windows. As part of the trip we crossed over to Pyramiden, walked through the town and then hiked over to Ekmanfjord before crossing back to Pyramiden to be picked up. When we got back to Pyramiden we had a several hour wait for the inflatables to pick us up and were shown around the town by some friendly English speaking geologists. I remember the museum as it had a stuffed polar bear that had been shot in the town as it was a danger to people, you could count the 22 bullet holes in it before they managed to kill it. It made us appreciate the danger of polar bears more and how important it was not to have food in your tents. As well as this hiking trip we spent the rest of the time ice climbing on the glaciers. Other people on the trip were involved in ringing birds at the mouth of Isfjorden and others collecting plant samples from around another set of cabins that were closer to Longyearbyen but still on Billefjord. All of us were part of a study to measure the effects of 24 hours daylight on insulin levels in the body. This involved taking urine samples every time you went, in the end we had 10,000 samples which we had to bring back through UK Customs at Heathrow Airport - this raised a few eyebrows and took a bit of explaining!

Fun fact - I am reading a science fiction novel, Lines of Departure, by Marko Kloos and a major part of it takes place on the colony planet of New Svalbard, and in the town of New Longyearbyen. Naturally, it is ice-bound! Got a kick out of that as I was watching this video.

I spent a day there back in 1997 when the town was still inhabited. I wanted a photo standing in front of the Lenin statue. A Russian woman walked by, so I asked her if she could take my picture. Of course, I spoke no Russian, and she apparently spoke no English. She kept shaking her head "no" and began to walk away. Luckily, she looked back and saw me awkwardly trying to take a picture of myself with my big camera (before the days of phones and selfies). She returned and took several really good shots. I think she originally thought I wanted to take a picture of HER, so that's why she kept saying no. Anyway, it was a nice memory from a very interesting place.

YES fascinated is the word..loved this. I know of Soviet era, no matter what others say it was advanced and very organized life with great healthcare and education.... grew up in one being Slovak and I would love to see those movies they got in archive! Food was mouthwatering, my kind of dishes! Thank you for this type of content.....regards Jana

Wow, so weird/spooky. I just LOVE the old Cold War era stuff just lying around like it's just been left there. There's an old Nike/Hercules base just a little way west of us and they've made it a paintball field. It's another Cold War gem that is a very bare bones kind of thing that's far less of a 'going concern' than Pyramiden. So surprising that they'd cater so well to English speakers/readers and pull it all off pretty nicely too.
